En la ciudad de Wisborg viven felices el joven Hutter y su mujer Ellen, hasta que el oscuro agente inmobiliario Knock decide enviar a Hutter a Transilvania para cerrar un negocio con el conde Orlok. Una vez en el castillo, Hutter es recibido por el siniestro conde, que se excita cuando el joven se corta un dedo. Al día siguiente, Hutter amanece con dos pequeñas marcas en el cuello, que interpreta como picaduras de mosquito.. Datos de interés: Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens, conocida en España Nosferatu el vampiro es una película muda dirigida por F.W. Murnau. Adaptación de la novela: Murnau quiso realizar una adaptación cinematográfica de la novela Drácula, de Bram Stoker, pero su estudio no logró hacerse con los derechos de la historia. De modo que decidió filmar su propia versión de la novela y el resultado es una película que tiene un gran parecido con la historia original de Stoker. El nombre de "Drácula" se cambió por el de "Nosferatu"y también se cambiaron los nombres de los personajes: el Conde Drácula es aquí el Conde Orlok, por ejemplo. Harker es Hutter, Mina es Ellen y la Inglaterra victoriana es la ciudad de Viborg, o de Bremen en la versión francesa, así como también en la inglesa. Sin embargo, la viuda de Stoker demandó la película por infracción de derechos de autor y ganó el juicio. El tribunal ordenó que se destruyeran todas las cintas de Nosferatu, pero un reducido número de copias de la película ya había sido distribuido por todo el mundo y permanecieron escondidas por particulares hasta la muerte de la viuda de Bram Stoker. Con el paso de los años se hicieron más copias de esas cintas (algunas de muy baja calidad y con cortes importantes). Nosferatu se labró la reputación de ser una de las mejores películas sobre el mito del vampiro y uno de los máximos exponentes del Expresionismo alemán. Rodada en escenarios naturales, una práctica poco habitual ésta que la aleja de los postulados del cine expresionista alemán, abundantes planos de Nosferatu están inspirados en pinturas románticas. Ahora, la obra Nosferatu de Murnau pertenece al dominio público en Estados Unidos, y existe un gran número de copias en vídeo, generalmente de muy baja calidad ya que provienen de copias hechas a partir de otras copias de las primeras cintas distribuidas para la exhibición internacional. (Fuente: Filmaffinity, Wikipedia) Libro Título: Drácula Autor: Bram Stoker Idioma: Inglés Año: 1897 País: Irlanda Género: Novela Datos de interés: Drácula (Vlad Draculea) es el protagonista de la novela homónima del irlandés Bram Stoker, de 1897, que dio lugar a una larga lista de versiones de cine, cómics y teatro. Drácula es el más famoso de los «vampiros humanos». Se dice que Stoker fue asesorado por un erudito en temas orientales, el húngaro Hermann (Arminius) Vámbéry, que se reunió algunas veces con el escritor para comentarle las peripecias del verdadero Drácula. Debido a algunas novelas y versiones cinematográficas de Drácula, mucha gente piensa que Stoker basó su personaje en una figura histórica: Vlad Tepes, conocido como Vlad el Empalador, y en leyendas de vampiros que circulaban en Europa oriental. Tepes vivió en el siglo XV y fue príncipe de Valaquia, (que junto con Moldavia y Transilvania constituyó el reino de Rumanía). Bram Stoker encontró una breve referencia al voivoda Drácula en un libro sobre Valaquia y Moldavia, en el que su autor decía en un pie de página: «Drácula, en la lengua nativa de Valaquia, significa 'diablo'». La sonoridad de este nombre le gustó a Stoker, que había llamado originalmente a su vampiro «conde Wampyr». Decidió entonces llamarlo «conde Drácula». Sin embargo, Stoker no conocía nada sobre la vida del verdadero Tepes (de hecho incluso hoy en día se desconocen muchos aspectos de su vida y de su muerte). En realidad, la novela Drácula no tiene relación con la vida de Vlad Tepes. Actualmente se sabe que Bram Stoker se basó en la figura de la condesa húngara Erzsébet Báthory (1560-1614). Según la leyenda bebía y se bañaba en sangre, creyendo que le devolvería la juventud. Publicaba avisos en los que solicitaba doncellas para integrar su corte, a las que luego asesinaba y quitaba la sangre. Cuando fue descubierta, se encontraron en las mazmorras de su castillo decenas de cadáveres de mujeres desangradas. Sin embargo, muchos historiadores coinciden en que esto no era más que invención de sus enemigos para justificar su ejecución y hacerse así con sus posesiones. Todos los ayudantes de la condesa Báthory fueron decapitados. Ella fue condenada a vivir encerrada en su cuarto recibiendo los alimentos por un hueco practicado en la pared, ya que por aquel entonces la pena capital estaba prohibida para la nobleza. Tiempo después fue encontrada muerta por uno de sus carceleros. Stoker conocía los detalles de la superstición y atribuye a Drácula los rasgos peculiares del vampiro, tales como: ? La capacidad de hacer que cambie el tiempo. ? Lograr obediencia de seres repulsivos, como las ratas, moscas, arañas y los murciélagos, pero también de los lobos y los zorros. ? Una fuerza sobrehumana. ? Convertirse en animal o en niebla. ? Perder facultades durante el día. El vampiro huye de la luz diurna, que lo debilita pero no lo destruye: puede moverse a medio día durante un escaso período de tiempo (el conde Drácula, en la novela, aparece a plena luz del día buscando a Mina Harker). ? Dormir sobre tierra, traída de su lugar natal, en el interior de un ataúd. ? Beber sangre humana (su único alimento) y convertir en vampiros a quienes aseste su mordedura fatídica y bautice con su propia sangre haciéndoles beberla. Si únicamente son mordidos, no se transforman en vampiros. ? Se le puede mantener a raya con crucifijos, ristras o flores de ajo, la Sagrada Forma consagrada y agua bendita; pero para que muera realmente, se le ha de clavar una estaca en el corazón o se lo ha de decapitar. ? El Drácula de Stoker tiene todos los elementos de los vampiros que lo precedieron, más algunas características tomadas del hombre lobo, cuya historia había sido publicada poco antes. Overview The vampire is one of the most popular and enduring images in the world, giving rise to hundreds of monster movies around the globe every year, not to mention novels, short stories, plays, TV shows, and commercial merchandise. Yet the Western vampire image that we know from the film, television, and literature of today is very different from its eastern European progenitor. Nina Auerbach has said that "every age creates the vampire that it needs." In this course we will explore the eastern European origins of the vampire, similar entities in other cultures that predate them, and how the vampire in its look, nature, vulnerabilities, and threat has changed over the centuries. This approach will provide us with the means to learn about the geography, village and urban cultures, traditional social structure, and religions of eastern Europe; the nature and manifestations of Evil and the concept of Limited Good; physical, temporal, and societal boundaries and ritual passage that accompany them; and major historical and intellectual periods (the settlement of Europe, the Age of Reason, Romanticism, Neo-classicism, the Enlightenment, the Victorian era, up to today).

    Nosferatu (1922) & the Vampire Lovers (1970)

    Sheldon 1 Matthew A. Sheldon Media and Society Andrew Martin 9/27/2014 Nosferatu (1922) & the Vampire Lovers (1970) While watching F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu (1922) and Roy Ward Baker’s the Vampire Lovers (1970) I came to discover that these vampire stories are less about the patriarchal battles of good vs. evil, and more about the repressed sexual battles between a man and a woman within the historical context of its time. Murnau's silent masterpiece Nosferatu is like seeing the vampire movie before it became a trendy pop icon of commercials, jokes, books, and over 100 different films. Nosferatu is still to this day the quintessential vampire film, and its surreal and haunting aesthetics of German Expressionism give off the feeling as if its creators were truly in awe of the legendary material. When reading the article “Dracula in the twilight: Murnau’s Nosferatu” by Judith Mayne, she explores much of the changes that were made when Murnau adapted Nosferatu from Bram Stoker’s 1897 Dracula novel. When listing several of the changes the one change that Mayne seems to directly focus on were Dracula’s central conflict and his relationship to the victims. “First Van Helsing is in no way the protagonist of the film. Instead of a conflict between two patriarchal figures, we have an encounter between a man and a woman” (Mayne, 28). Dracula’s Sheldon 2 famous adversary Van Helsing is reduced from Murnau’s film version and the focus is shifted more towards Jonathan’s beautiful wife Nina. Mayne seems to suggest that Murnau wanted the story to focus less on patriarchal conflicts and explore more of the sexual tension that occurs between Nina, Jonathan and Nosferatu.

SEATONVILLE HARBOR - NIGHT The brackish waters of a modest commercial marina, with rows of contract fishing and cargo trawlers hugging the concrete strip of the waterfront and warehouse blocks. Fog hangs low over the water. All's quiet on the night watch, save for the dinging of buoys and slow churn of the tides. INT. HARBORMASTER'S OFFICE The cluttered office of the Harbormaster, manned by a single operator: a night watchman in his late fifties. Hokey nautical memorabilia hugs the walls, a coffee pot brews, and the watchman reads from a dog-eared paperback while seated before several security monitors. NIGHT WATCHMAN (singsong) My father's a poor missionary… he saves pretty women from sin… The silhouette of a man moves across the monitors, unnoticed by the sentry; pacing from one screen to the next, along the perimeter fence. NIGHT WATCHMAN (still singing) … he'll save you a blonde for five dollars… Lord, how the money rolls in. The sentry flips a page, not noticing as the intruder nonchalantly LEAPS over the twelve-foot high fence without missing a step, vanishing from the security cameras' view. CUT TO: 2. EXT. SEATONVILLE HARBOR Leather dress shoes touch down on the corrugated steel roof of a warehouse, as the intruder is revealed: CHARLES RUEGER, somewhere in his forties, bespectacled, his expression haunted. Dressed in a threadbare overcoat and the dirty, ripped trappings of what was once a three-piece suit underneath.
