BMFA Scale Technical Committee Newsletter - December 2013 Editorial: Andy Sephton The main news for this issue is Scale Helicopters will be joining BMFA Scale from the R/C Power Technical Committee with effect from the 2014 season. The 2014 Rule Book will incorporate the Helicopter Scale Rules and we will be co-opting a Scale Helicopter flyer onto the Scale Technical Committee. I didn’t get the chance to see them at this year’s Nationals, but I’m looking forward to witnessing their models next year. I’m sure you’ll join me in giving them a warm welcome into our group. For Scale Indoor Flyers, please note that the next Scale Indoor Nationals will be my last as organiser. We need a successor, please contact me for more information. I was asked by more than one modeller if static judging could be brought into the flying only schedule for Scale Indoor Free Flight and RC so that more complex models with less than ideal flying characteristics would not be disadvantaged. The very reason that flying only was introduced was to give the less complex models a chance in Scale competition. It also allows models with less than complete documentation to be constructed and demonstrated in competition. The best place to compete complex models is the Nationals, Flying Only is for flying models and there is no mark given for complexity. There will be a number of rule changes for 2014 in the January 2014 issue of the BMFA Scale Rule Book. See later in this Newsletter for a summary Results: to save space, result tables for those competitions that have their results promulgated on the Scale BMFA website have not been included in the Newsletter. -

March / April 2013 Alberta Aviation Museum Association – Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at 2:00 pm, March 17th, 2013 at the Alberta Aviation Museum, 11410 Kingsway, Edmonton. Purpose of the meeting: • To provide reports to the General Membership • To review the Annual Financial Statement with the General Membership • To elect the Board of Directors of the Alberta Aviation Museum Association 2013/2014 • To discuss the current status and future of the Alberta Aviation Museum • To answer questions from the General Membership All memberships expire December 31st of each year, so please ensure yours has been renewed. However, this is a work in progress and I find that sometimes I miss things, or I may be inconsistent about what makes the cut and what doesn’t. I tend to leave out ads, announcements that get too close to ads (usually), contest announcements, and such. Contest reports, kanone lists, etc. I include. Starting sometime, I think, in 2010, plans were bound into the newsletter. Before that, they came in an envelope with the newsletter but not attached to it, although in the late '80s there weren't so many and they were bound in the newsletter. Het grote LUCHTVAARTKENNIS register Het register van het Luchtvaart Historisch Tijdschrift ‘LUCHTVAARTKENNIS’ en de daaraan voorafgaande ‘Mededelingen’ van de Afdeling Luchtvaartkennis van de KNVvL geeft een overzicht van hetgeen in de afgelopen jaren is gepubliceerd, m.u.v. de eerste jaargang, die helaas niet meer te traceren blijkt. Uiteraard is v.w.b. De eerste jaargangen selectief opgetreden, aangezien daarin veel summiere feiten (vliegtuiggegevens etc.) staan, die zo niet achterhaald, dan toch eenvoudiger elders te vinden zijn. Ook de diverse publicaties van het vooroorlogse Nederlandse burgerlucht- vaartregister zijn weggelaten, omdat deze na het verschijnen van het boek ‘75 jaar Nederlandse burgerluchtvaartregisters’ als overbodig kunnen worden beschouwd. Aangezien eerst in 1987 een volledige paginanummering voor het gehele jaar werd ingevoerd, wordt tot dat jaar de vindplaats aangeduid met jaartal en nummer van de betreffende aflevering van de ‘Mededelingen’. Vanaf 1987 geschied zulks per pagina. De in de Luchtvaartencyclopedie verschenen onderwerpen worden aangeduid conform de aflevering waarin deze verschenen. In een enkel geval uit 1985/86 bleek dit niet te achterhalen. Wanneer in een artikel de gehele productie van een bepaalde fabriek wordt weergegeven, wordt volstaan met de vermelding van de fabriek en worden niet de afzonderlijke types vermeld. STRAIGHT AND LEVEL By Brad Thorn as President Antique/Classic Division The Fall season has arrived with its warm days and cool evenings, and in most parts of the USA the fly-in season has ended. Scattered among these har vest days are small social gatherings known in North Carolina as "Pig Pickin's". The purpose is to enjoy fellowship, refreshments and excellent food. Most "Pig Pickin's" engage a chef with the know-how and ex pertise to slowly roast a whole pig over the hickory fire. In late September we received a phone call from Antique/Classic Division member Farrell James of Kannapolis, North Carolina, inviting my wife Ferne and myself to a "Pig Pickin'" on their strip. We eagerly accepted his kind invitation and our plans for that the temporary parking area - part of the James' Saturday were set. WCAM Website and I Have Found Several on Photo Sharing Sites As Well
Here is a brief summary of the aircraft in the Western Canada Aviation Museum Collection. CAAA artists may choose one or more as subjects for the conference exhibition. Please let the President know which aircraft you are planning to paint. Photos of the aircraft are available on the WCAM website and I have found several on photo sharing sites as well. Hint: try a google image search for your subject along with 'WCAM' and/or 'Winnipeg'. (from the WCAM Tour Guide Manual) WCAM - Air Craft on Display CF-AAM Fokker Super Universal The aircraft on exhibit, CF-AAM was reconstructed using the parts of four wrecked airplanes, by Clark Seaborn and his team of dedicated friends. After a 17-year road to restoration, the Fokker first flew July 24, 1998, but it took another year of proving and paperwork to gain a coveted certificate of airworthiness. The aircraft had an eight-year tour on the vintage aircraft circuit, making appearances all over North America, covering over 35,000 miles before coming 'home' to rest at the Museum in 2005. In its heyday, this aircraft was a luxurious transport - the comfortable mohair upholstered seats, mahogany cabin paneling, sliding glass windows for fresh air - especially when compared with sled dog transportation. The pilot's accommodation, featuring an enclosed cockpit, was truly a remarkable enhancement for its time. Clark Seaborn recalls: "The artifacts of four airplanes arrived at my Calgary home on a flatbed trailer in July 1982, and with the help of basic drawings, we commenced work on the fuselage structure. Several of my friends were possessed of the same dream and assisted tirelessly on the restoration." Because the artifacts were so ravaged, the team scoured the world for further construction and finishing details.
