Nadeem Institute of Meteorology, University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Austria The project “CC-WaterS” (Climate Change and Impacts on Water Supply) deals with challenges of water supply under the influence of existing and future climate change in Central and Eastern Europe. The meteorological part within this project assesses future climate conditions by using different regional climate models. The following three scenarios from the ENSEMBLES database are used: ECHAM5-REGCM3, ARPEGE-ALADIN, and HADCM3-PROMES with a spatial resolution 25 km each. For the whole target area, regionalization and bias correction by quantile mapping for temperature and pre- cipitation is performed on a daily basis by using observations from the E-OBS dataset (25 km resolution) from the ENSEMBLES database. Over the Alpine region, a precipitation dataset from the ETH Zürich with a spatial resolution of about 18 km is applied. For one case study region in the Eastern Alps (containing the mountain areas of Hochschwab, Rax and Schneeberg in Styria/Lower Austria) a second step is taken to depict the small-scale variability in mountainous terrain. This is performed by using the precipitation analysis from the nowcasting system INCA provided by the Austrian Meteorological Service (ZAMG). These analyses combine ground-based and radar observations on a 1x1 km grid. With additional local temperature and precipitation observations, a localized, bias corrected precipitation scenario dataset on a daily base is produced. This presentation will discuss the method of bias correction and localization and the results for the 21st century. In a second step, uncertainties will be quantified, both resulting from the climate scenarios as well as from the localization method applied..

Jahrestagung der Arbeitsgemeinschaft fand im Bereich der östlichen Ausläufer des gro- ßen Alpenbogens, im Bereich der „Wiener Hausberge" Schneealpe und Rax statt. Höchste Er- hebungen erreichen noch Höhen über 2 000 m ü.M. Dann fallen die Alpen zur Pannonischen Tiefebene mit dem Neusiedlersee (115 in ü.M.) ab. Dementsprechend bietet das Gebiet nahe bei- sammen liegende große landschaftliche Gegensätze, aber auch unterschiedlichste Pflanzen- und Tierwelt. So war es auch naheliegend, dass eine Exkursion an den Neusicdlersee führte. Insgesamt wurden während der Tagung 117 Arten beobachtet, davon 37 n u r am Neusiedlersee. Besonders bemerkenswert ist die Beobachtung von zwei Gänsegeiern Gyps fulvus auf der Rax, also weit außerhalb ihres sonstigen Verbreitungsgebietes in Österreich; weiters sind Wanderfalke Falco peregrinus als Brutvogel sowie Karmingimpel Carpodacus erxlhriniis zu nennen. Die Gesamtbeobachtungen der verschiedenen Exkursionen sind in der Tabelle zusammenfassend dargestellt. Bei der Behandlung einzelner Arten werden nur jene angeführt, die wegen ihrer Höhenlage, Häufigkeit, Brutnachweise oder aus anderen Gründen bemerkenswert erscheinen.

Now since 2002: Institut für Historische Werkstoffe (IHW-EFDZ), Mareckkai 46, A-8700 Leoben (Austria): History and situation For more than seventy years now archeologists have been researching very sophisticated copper smelting in the Alps during the late Bronze-Age (1200-800 BC)[1]. From the region of lower Austria (Schneeberg-Rax) across northern Styria (Radmer, Eisenerz, Johnsbach, Paltental) and continued in the south of Salzburg (Mühlbach) and eastern Tyrol (Jochberg-Kitzbühel, ) with some traces in the Inn-valley, the northern prehistoric production zone ends in Switzerland (Savognin-Oberhalbstein, GR). In the south late bronze age copper-smelting is researched near Trento (Val Sugana) and some traces are found in the north near Bozen/Bolzano (Margreid, Sarntal) and also in Eastern Tyrol (Matrei); other smelting sites are hoped to be found in future in the southern "Grauwackenzone" in Carinthia [2]. The structure of the smelting sites and the remains of the smelting process are very homogeneous in the whole area, 700 km wide,: Stone-built twin-furnaces situated on a slope near flowing water with an approx. 40 cm wide square shape inside (FIG.1), and an apparently open tapping-wall; on the upper part near the deposits for ores and fuel (charcoal), was the clay-lined roasting bead: 1 m wide and 6 to 20 meters long; below the furnaces (often multiple-twins) the slag-pit, which contains several types of slags (blocks, sand, crystalline, glassy etc.).

April 2001 Summary: Subalpine and alpine Vegetation of Mt. Schneealpe (Styria, Austria). — The study is part of die City of Vienna's Karst Research Project and provides a large scale (1:12.500) map of the subalpine and alpine Vegetation of Mt. Schneealpe, Styria (Austria). On principle, mapping units were phytosociologically defined plant communities, based on a classification of 158 rele'ves. The total of 41 communities is portrayed in the text and by means of 7 Vegetation tables. Mapping was done by delineating the areas covered by different plant communities on IR and BW-orthophotos during summer 1999. With its highest peak at 1910 m Mt. Schneealpe would naturally be covered by krummholz of Piniis mugo and vvoodlands (mainly dominared by Picea abies and Larix deciditd) except for rock faces, debris cones, exposed ridges and avalanche paths. However, the actual Vegetation is shaped by some hundred years of alpine pasturing which favoured the expansion of natural alpine grasslands (mainly Seslerio- Caricetum sempervirentis and Festnca pumila-Agrostis «^>zW-grassland) as well as of specialised pasture communities dominated either by Nardus stricta or by Deschampsia cespitosa or by a mixture of herbs (e.g. Leontodon hispidus and Crepis anrea) and tussock grasses (e.g.

Ein dritter Teil behandelt die wirtschaftliche Bedeutung von geologischen Rohstoffen in der Steiermark. We selected four sites from which we had adequate Alps samples and for which exact vegetation maps were available: the mountains Hoch- schwab, Schneealpe, Rax and Schneeberg. Both taxa prefer open dry alpine grass- land with diggable soil and/or stones. T. oreinos oreinos is restricted to subalpine Country and alpine boulder societies and Caricetum firmae. While C. obtusus dwells on several communities of plants, it seems to be bound to unconsolidated stony ground. Austria As both taxa prefer naturally forest-free areas, they are not affected by structural changes of the habitat, such as reforestation caused by the abandonment of grazing and the shift of vegetation zones. But it has to be considered that T. oreinos oreinos and C. obtusus are limited by microclimatic factors, as they prefer cooler habitats. The mountains Schneealpe, Rax and Schneeberg, reaching barely 2 000 m in height, are on the climatic limit of the species distribution. Therefore, the investigated taxa are vulnerable to the upward shift of climate zones.
