HIGH-MOUNTAIN PERMAFROST IN THE AUSTRIAN ALPS (EUROPE) Gerhard Karl Lieb Institute of Geography University of Graz Heinrichstrasse 36 A-8010 Graz e-mail: [email protected] Abstract Permafrost research in the Austrian Alps (Eastern Alps) is based on a variety of methods, including at large scales, the measurement of the temperature of springs and of the base of winter snow cover, and at small scales, mainly an inventory of some 1450 rock glaciers. Taking all the information available into consideration, the lower limit of discontinuous permafrost is situated near 2500 m in most of the Austrian Alps. These results can be used for modelling the permafrost distribution within a geographical information system. Detailed investi- gations were carried out in the Doesen Valley (Hohe Tauern range) using additional methods, including several geophysical soundings. In this way, realistic estimates of certain permafrost characteristics and the volume of a large active rock glacier (some 15x106m3) were possible. This rock glacier has been chosen as a monitoring site to observe the effects of past and future climatic change. Kozjak and the Pohorje mountains. Three communities of the order Androsacetalia vandellii (Asplenietea trichomanis) were recognized: Campanulo cochleariifoliae-Primuletum villosae ass. nova (Androsacion vandellii ), Woodsio ilvensis-Asplenietum septentrionalis (Asplenion septentrionalis) and Hypno-Polypodietum (Hypno-Polypodion vulgaris). The communities are distinguished by altitude, light intensity, temperature and the number of endemic species, south-European orophytes or cosmopolite species. Jahrestagung der Arbeitsgemeinschaft fand im Bereich der östlichen Ausläufer des gro- ßen Alpenbogens, im Bereich der „Wiener Hausberge" Schneealpe und Rax statt. Höchste Er- hebungen erreichen noch Höhen über 2 000 m ü.M. Dann fallen die Alpen zur Pannonischen Tiefebene mit dem Neusiedlersee (115 in ü.M.) ab. Dementsprechend bietet das Gebiet nahe bei- sammen liegende große landschaftliche Gegensätze, aber auch unterschiedlichste Pflanzen- und Tierwelt. So war es auch naheliegend, dass eine Exkursion an den Neusicdlersee führte. Insgesamt wurden während der Tagung 117 Arten beobachtet, davon 37 n u r am Neusiedlersee. Besonders bemerkenswert ist die Beobachtung von zwei Gänsegeiern Gyps fulvus auf der Rax, also weit außerhalb ihres sonstigen Verbreitungsgebietes in Österreich; weiters sind Wanderfalke Falco peregrinus als Brutvogel sowie Karmingimpel Carpodacus erxlhriniis zu nennen. Die Gesamtbeobachtungen der verschiedenen Exkursionen sind in der Tabelle zusammenfassend dargestellt. Bei der Behandlung einzelner Arten werden nur jene angeführt, die wegen ihrer Höhenlage, Häufigkeit, Brutnachweise oder aus anderen Gründen bemerkenswert erscheinen. -

Nestled in the breathtaking scenery of the Rofan and Karwendel Mountains is Tirol’s largest lake – Lake Achensee. This fossil oil has been mined in the region for over a century and has been used in the treatment of a wide variety of ailments.
