Priorat is now one of just two regions with a designated DOCa classification, a step up from plain DO, the other being Rioja. A band of friends René Barbier was the first of a group of winemakers to buy land outside the village of Gratallops, the estate that was to become world famous as Clos Mogador. Credit: Copyright 2015 Rosemary George It began in the late 1970s, when René Barbier bought land outside the village of Gratallops, the estate that was to become world famous as Clos Mogador. The first wine was made in 1989 and Barbier was joined by what he calls a band of copains, friends who had worked or studied together and went on to develop their own estates, such as Alvaro Palacios from Rioja. However, Priorat has always been a wine area, with vineyards run by the priory of Scala Dei, the ruins of which nestle at the foot of the dramatic cliffs of Montsant. In 1835, the Spanish government confiscated all church property, and then the region suffered badly from the phylloxera (the aphid that was imported into Europe on American vines and ultimately destroyed most of the vineyards of Europe, until the remedy of grafting European vines onto American rootstock was discovered). -

CARLOS MORO GONZÁLEZ Carlos Moro is a passionate wine maker and vine grower, an enthusiast for the land and its vines. He is a third generation wine grower. His childhood was spent playing across the vineyards his family owned in the Golden Mile of Ribera del Duero and in Cigales. In the 60’s he has his first winemaking experience by helping his uncle Jesús during the winemaking process at the old family winery in Valoria la Buena (DO Cigales) which he still keeps. It was there that his acute intuition and love of wine grew. After studying in Madrid and becoming Doctor in Oenology and Viticulture, he worked in Madrid for many years until returning to its family lands in Ribera del Duero in the 80’s and founding Matarromera in 1988. After the great success of his Ribera del Duero wines, Carlos decided to continue his family winemaking tradition in DO Cigales, reinvigorating the area when he founded Valdelosfrailes in 1998. A decade later he was able to keep expanding his winemaking experience by opening wineries in DO Rueda and DO Toro. Later, in 2014 he completed his life-long dream of founding a winery in DOCa Rioja, which was named after him, Bodega Carlos Moro. Finally, he decided to expand in DO Ribeiro with Casar de Vide Winery. Nowadays Carlos Moro is the Founder, owner and Head Winemaker of 9 different wineries in 6 Spanish appellations of origin. Restless worker with a long-term vision on the benefits of innovation, sustainable development and respect for the environment, has led the production of wines that have their own personalities and the highest quality. -

Suelen ser vinos jóvenes con características afrutadas. De color amarillo intenso tirando hacia el limón, son limpios, transparentes y brillantes. En boca son equilibrados. El post gusto es intenso y fino. Rosados: Aportan un amplio abanico de aromas frutales y sabores. Son ligeros, frescos, y postgusto intenso. Tintos: Son de un intenso color rojo oscuro. Los toques granates denotan juventud, frescura y energía. Presenta una amplia estructura. Son vinos con un postgusto prolongado y denso. b.2) Vinos sometidos a envejecimiento Los vinos sometidos a envejecimiento son tendentes a dar notas más especiadas y a ligera madera, con un suave toque de tostados. Poseen un cuerpo, persistente y de final agradable. En base a esto, la propia bodega, bien con medios propios o externos, efectuará un examen organoléptico y concederá al mismo la condición de apto, o no apto, para ostentar la mención IGP “Valle del Cinca”.
