======September 26, 2012 Good morning Patrick-

Late in the day, yesterday (9/25), I received a call from Pastor Mark at St. Luke's in San Diego. He told me that Rich Floegel had suffered a massive heart attack in the early morning hours and had passed away.

I knew Rich for forty years. He was a good friend and business partner. I will miss him terribly. He was a 3000 CE in New York, Eastern Region Tech Support Manager, 1700 Facility in La Jolla, some sort of marketing position at Headquarters in Minneapolis, probably several other places as well.

There is a Memorial service at St. Luke's in Mission Valley on Friday morning. I hope to have the obit in the morning.

I can’t make it as I am volunteering at Mercy Hosp. that after noon.

Bob (Etelamaki)

======September 4, 2012 Pat,

We are getting too many of these lately, but at our age, that is to be expected. I appreciate what you do. I did not know Gary, but I knew Tom Persico very well. We became good friends. Tom was a great guy.

We have company coming toward the end of the month. I hope it does not mess up my attendance at the Super Lunch.

Thanks,

Mike (Doyle)

======August 29, 2012 Hi Pat,

Tom Persico worked pretty much everywhere. In the late 60s he worked at Arden Hills and was a designer. I believe he designed the 6681 Communications controller. In the early 70s he was at Roseville. In the late 70s he was at Plymouth and was a Marketing Manager (Series 1 products?). Later he moved to Government Systems and I believe he was a product Manager in the Disk Subsystems area.

I'm going to copy Al Potter on this because I believe Al has some history of which I am not aware. Comments Al?

Steve Cook ------I'd say this about Tom's CDC career:

Tom graduated from South Dakota State University, and one of his first CDC jobs was designing the 6681 channel converter. He was an engineering manager at ARHOPS and RVLOPS, and he moved to marketing Series One at Plymouth, and later to marketing to the Government with Computing Devices International, the new name for Government Systems when Ceridian was organized. Tom was a special guy, always optimistic and forward thinking. He will be missed.

Al Potter

------Worked many years with Tom.

Hi Pat,

Thanks for considering me. I think I've been on the notification list already, though I've never attended. I may attend in the future and appreciate the death notifications, especially if their not mine. I do know the lunches are now at Fuddruckers in Bloomington. This year we'll be out of town Sept. 11 until the end of October. I'm not familiar with many of the former AH employees, but have met some playing in the old AH golf league at Manitou Ridge, and spending the last 5 years of my working life at General Dynamics(Ken Losee, Jerry Casey and Dale Siemers to name a few). I retired in Sept. of 2005.

Hope all is well with you and think it's great that you've continued this connection of former CDC folks.

Hi Pat

We will not be able to make it this year. We will be on a cruise to the Mediterranean. Made it to Alaska on another fishing trip with my Son. Managed to fill one cooler with Salmon and Halibut fillets. It’s getting kind of pricey to go after Halibut. Also took a one week trip to Jamaica and another one out to Phoenix and Colorado. Penny spent a week out in Oregon visiting a friend.

Our oldest Son retired from Delta this year and started working at United. His age plus years of service was over 60 so he could take the retirement package. He retains his flying privileges and so do we. So now we can fly either Delta or United for free plus all of their partners for a small fee.

======August 16, 2012 Hi Pat,

It's always nice to hear about the annual CDC lunch and then see the photos and read the comments from the folks. We cannot make the lunch but one of these years...

I retired a couple of years ago. I spent the last 15 years working as a engineer for a test equipment company (Schlumberger/LTXCredence) - Intel used our testers to test their computer chips (and of course, several other companies used our equipment). This last job was a very interesting and enjoyable wrap up to a near 50 year career that began at Control Data.

My wife and I have been traveling quite a bit for the last 20 some years, ever since our kids "left the nest". We've picked it up some since my retirement. Last year we did a 25 day tour of the British Isles and a 45 day cruise from Florida to the Mediterranean and back. Later this year we do a tour of India and early next year we do a 51 day cruise from Rotterdam to Singapore. Other than travel, I've picked up on hobbies including golf, pistol target shooting, pool/bocci/shuffle board with the boys, and bird watching. I also walk 3.5 miles twice a day for exercise.

Have a good one. regards,

Tom (Wallters)

======August 16, 2012 Thanks, Pat.

Picture reminds me of a picture of me in the IBM 7090 computer fish bowl when I was working for Space Technology Corp (STL) in El Segundo, California as a "Tracking Coordinator" in the Space Kinetic Group,1962,3 & 4.

Comments concerning John Gobats’ passing………

We all know cancer is out there, but when it hits close it feels like a terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to John's new wife, kids and grandkids. It seems so unfair.

Bruce Carlston

======Pat

Darn… I always thought John would live for ever. I never met a man with a better constitution. On the coldest of days he would ware a long sleeve shirt, and that was about it… I don’t think he ever used a day of sick time… goes to show what a great equalizer time is.

Lyle (Borton)

======Hi Pat,

This blew me away too! I owe John a lot because he asked me whether I would help Bob Brown with floating point on P3. I worked days for AD&C and mids with Bob and discovered that I had a flare for discovering problems with machines. I went from P3 to P2 and P1 and, eventually THETA and never looked back. John was quite a character and it's difficult to imagine that he's gone.

Cheers,

Tony (Wilson)

======I am sorry to hear about John's passing.

Ted Nguyen

======Pat, I was up to Vermilion in July for my 50th class reunion and I stopped in to see John. The first words out of his mouth after Jim Oja is that you?, was I have inoperable cancer. I had about an hour long visit with John and his wife, glad I stopped in.

Jim (Oja)

======

Pat, Thanks much. John and I enjoyed working and playing (he was an ACE at bar darts). Sorry to hear this info. Regards, Dave (Yunker)

======Hi back,

Yes. We are getting up in age where many of our peers are leaving us for a better place. I was really surprised to read about Gobats. I got the memorial obit to display, so got to read the whole thing. It appears that Gobats must have come down with some condition that took him quickly, since he married his girlfriend in 2011. Though they may have gotten married knowing that he was dying.

Mary Ann and I are doing well health wise. I am walking at least 30 minutes every day (the dog needs her exercise).

We won't be making it to the Super Lunch this fall. Spent 3 weeks in Ohio around July 4th. Will spend 2 weeks in Missouri the end of September and first week of October. So, I will send some info to you for your informational listing (I better get on that soon).

I enjoyed the photos that you posted on Facebook of your trip to Normandy. Did you guys do that this summer, or was it earlier in the year?

Take care, and stay healthy. Say hi to your boss from both of us.

Hi Pat, Although I am very skeptical to emails / articles regarding "lost money" I saw on channel 9 the other night a story in regards to states signing on with a company to find owners of money held by the state.

Being skeptical I went to the dept of commerce website for state of minnesota to try to verify its legitimacy. It appears that the site missingmoney.com is part of a state activity.

It may be worth sending out some notification to Superlunch as it does appear there may be some proceeds from CDSI being held. I am currently following up on the information regarding some personal elegibility. http://mn.gov/commerce/topics/Unclaimed-Property/

This statement is found on the dept of commerce website. http://mn.gov/commerce/topics/Unclaimed-Property/find-unclaimed-property.jsp

Minnesota lists its owner names on the www.missingmoney.com website and that is where you should begin your search and claim processes for unclaimed property.

======July 22, 2012 Been ok. Had colon cancer 6 years ago, lung cancer 3 yrs ago and intestinal cancer 1 yr ago. All colon cancer cells so we have whipped it 3 times already. Still in Sunnyvale. Started with CDC in December 61 at the USAF Satellite Test Center. Still in contact with a lot of CDC people. Unfortunately my wife died in Jan 99 so am alone, must depend on friends for support as we had no children and no family out here. Still drive my 35 ft motorhome all day long w/o problems so just keep going one day at a time.

How often do you have the lunches? Might be back near there in the fall. going to Wyo antelope hunting for the 41st year in a row. Great streak.

Hi Pat,

I knew Ted Kocher, he was one of the good guys. He had an easy smile and was always friendly with everyone around him. Ted was a project/program manager in Engineering Services when I knew him. I believe he came out of the field, possibly from the East Coast. It's sad to learn of his passing.

Thanks from Alaska!

Kent (Hoover)

------Pat,

I knew Ted very well in my younger days. We were Customer Engineers together on 3600, Serial Two, at a government installation in Virginia. A good engineer. I will always remember, when we were replacing a memory stack on the 3600, it slipped and tore a hole in his new suit coat. Lost touch with him over the years. Didn't know he was living here.

Gerry (Selinger)

------I did not know Conrad, but might have run across him on one of my SVLOPS trips. I did know Ted as he was in one of Bob Young’s groups at the same I worked for Bob. Didn't know him real well though.

Jim Hoard

======July 16, 2012

Thanks (for the info about Pat Doran). He was our boss at one time. You were writing a serial drive diagnostic and I was working on the 808 diagnostic. He was a good guy. I was thinking about him a couple of days ago.

Bob Hardy ======Hi Pat

Thanks for the info. I worked for him for a while. Very nice person to work for. I see you got this from bob taylor. Would you have his email. Thanks.

I will try to get to the September 28 get together if I can. My wife's birthday.

Gordy (Hagfors)

======Hi Pat, I remember Pat Doran coming on board with John Barbour's Diagnostic Programming group in about 1965. Pat was a good co-worker and a fine person. I lost track of him sometime after that. I did run into him again at a Christian seminar in 1974.

======July 13, 2012

Hi,

I have had the honor of being associated with the Computer Industry since I graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in May 1965. My career started at on June 23, 1965 as an Electronic Packaging Engineer. The last 6 months of 1965 were spent in a training class where I learned how the computers work and then on the manufacturing test floor checking out computers making sure they would run all of the diagnostic software before shipping to the customer.

The Control Data 6600 computer was known as the first , and by the time I moved to my department, 6 of them had been shipped to customers at an approximate cost of $5 million each, which also included the cost of peripheral devices. This was in late 1965. My first assignment was to call each of the 6 customer sites and talk to the CDC customer engineers to insure the complex refrigerated cooling systems were working properly and were being properly maintained. I spent 24 years at CDC and saw the industry grow with much engineering innovation. I am still working in the industry attempting to promote some architecture changes invented by a long-time friend who also worked on CDC 6600 computers. To keep this reasonably short but still point out what has happened over the years, I have constructed the table below. There are two important abbreviation used, MFLOPS and PETAFLOPS. The first means Millions of Floating Point Operations per Second or 10^6 . The second is 10^15 flops. A benchmark program called Linpack has been used for years to measure compute processor speed, and is still available. The numbers below are not absolutely accurate but are in the ballpark for comparison purposes. If you would like to check out your own computer, click on the link at the bottom of this note.

CDC 6600 1964 3 MFLOPS $6 million

CDC 7600 1969 10 MFLOPS Similar to 6600

Cray 1 1977 80 MFLOPS $5 to $8 million

Cray 2 1982 800 MFLOPS Similar to Cray 1

HP Laptop 2007 168 MFLOPS $550 (My computer and there are no millions needed!)

Dell Desktop 2012 599 MFLOPS $345 (I am typing this note on this computer)

IBM Sequoia 2012 16 PETAFLOPS $? (The fastest supercomputer in the world designed and manufactured by IBM in Rochester, MN)

This is amazing innovative performance for any industry.

Pat

Lived one year in Toulouse while working at Sud Aviation, one year in Paris while at SIA, and six months in Ferney-Voltaire just outside of Geneva. We loved our stay and had intended to stay two more years, but due to economic reasons, CDC repatriated us. Alas! My oldest son Brian was born during that time in Paris but never considered applying for dual citizenship.

My memories of our stay in France are pretty fuzzy by now and most certainly out of date, but we covered a lot of territory while there. I can still recommend a few areas for your next visit if interested.

Good to hear from you. Somehow you always send a note about the same time I stop checking email for a few days. Yes, we're still here, but without any extra gas activity. We are still working on the house remodel after a hiatus due to a MIA electrician. Today there are two guys installing PEX tubing in floors and one guy in the garage tearing up walls to pull wire for outlets and lights. Retirement is great. I don't know why I didn't do this years ago :-). Well, other than the food-clothing-shelter thing. The invitation is still open here when you decide to take the northern route to Denver!

Just wanted to send a note to those in my email list (Damn, this is hard to write). Have been diligent forwarding the emails that I consider interesting/funny and will continue to do so for awhile. This is a note in advance to explain why this will change. Have been a smoker for over 60 years now and was diagnosed with lung cancer several months ago. Pursued all medical options and found there are none. So when you don’t hear from me for a while you’ll understand why and should remove me from your address book.

The State of Oregon has a Death with Dignity law on the books that allows a doctor to prescribe a lethal prescription when requested. Am considering this option because I don’t know the pain level or how sick you get at the end. Am also sending this to several people that I believe may be interested.

Hi Pat, Have you ever looked up "CDC 1604". It is really good. There is a quote of Tom Watson of IBM after CDC announced the 6600. Two pages later "Effect on IBM----". It says IBM pre-announced Model 90 to stop CDC from getting orders. CDC sued and won. I worked on the proposal which caused IBM to do that. It was to several Govt. labs. I also went to the bids conference with Jim Thornton. That was 1965-66. Brings back a lot of good memories. Hope this note finds you and your family well. The best!!!

HI Pat,

Thanks for the list. Boy, so many names, so many faces. You have an Ed "Roussen" listed. Should that be Ed Rousseau, who was at CDI and went on to a variety of positions with the Plato project, including a stint in Iran just before the Khomeini revolution? Ed still runs the Twin Cities Marathon and has done so in every one since its inception. He pops up in the CDC Retirees Club newsletter from time to time. Also, I saw Ed Borner, former EIC on the West Coast, in AZ last year. I have his email if you would like it.

My address is changed since we went full-time RVing in 2007. It's 3700 S. Westport AVE, PMB 3927, Sioux Falls, SD 57106. I would enjoy hearing from anyone interested in keeping in touch.

Hi Pat,

I recently found out about the SuperLunch group from CDC and I would like to be put on the Dist list and also could you please send me any info about your group.

I started working for CDC in 1966 teaching classes for CDI until 1972. I then transferred to ESE and worked there until 1988 teaching lower 3000 peripherals. Then the long shadow of RIF found me and I then went to work for Cray Research, Inc in Chippewa Falls, WI... I started working for Cray teaching the same devices that I had been teaching one month earlier at ESE so I was literally able to hit the ground running.

I know that many of the people I worked for and with are no longer with us, but I can only hope I can recognize those that I used to work with.

Pat,

THANK YOU for all of your efforts to keep memories and friendships alive from our time spent at CDC. I certainly hope to see you next year at the Super Lunch.....if not before walking at Silverwood.

Just a week ago I stopped at Pat Rosinek's to say hello and was met at the door by a relative who was staying with Pat who is sadly dealing w/Alzheimer's. I've been invited back and will try to stop next week. Pat is/was a very proud woman so please keep her in your prayers but do not publish her malady until she has given her okay.

I bumped into Dennis Denning and his wife this summer as we took our grandkids on a Mississippi Cruise from Boom Island.

Otherwise, haven't been in touch w/anyone. I'm much overdue for the Sept gathering and looking forward to next year.

Again, your time/energy in keeping communication going and maintaining lists are MUCH appreciated! I do the same for my high school and college classes and am aware of the commitment.

Hi Pat,

Sorry I missed the Super Lunch and our European guests. That morning I went to the cabin on Prior Lake to check things out and the water level had dropped to the point that the boat was stranded on the lift. With the dry weather forecast there was no chance that rain would save the day so I had to spend most of the day getting it off or the lift and boat would have been there for the Winter.

Looks like it was another successful year. See you next year.

Fred Schultz.. CDC’r worked manufacturing and in support.. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/startribune/obituary.aspx?n=frederic-russell- schultz&pid=156702475

Jim (Dandeneau)

Hi Pat,

I can't believe that Fred Schultz died, he was ten years younger than me. I worked a lot with him on the 990 and he taught me a lesson. Once, I pulled an all nighter trying to fix a problem in the divide unit of the 990 at headquarters. The problem was it was intermittent and no matter what I did I couldn't get it to go solid. Eventually, I handed over to Fred and went off for a shower. By the time I got bak Fred had fixed it. I asked him how he'd managed it and he replied that he set the margins to -10V and it went solid. I said: "Shit! We're not supposed to do that." He replied: "It fixed the problem didn't it?" From that time on I never hesitated to whack the margins on full. Fred was a fun guy to work with and I'm sorry to learn of his demise.

Tony Wilson - - - - - I worked with Fred in early 1970 when he was in 7600 check out and again when I managed Tech Support.

Aloha, Gordy Lange ======Thanks to Mike Bemis for the following info.

September 26, 2012 Good morning Patrick-

Mike (Bemis)
