This book is the work of such a community. We acknowledge with gratitude the resourceful and committed people who staff the Association of Theological Schools of the United States and Canada, who support theological schools in so many ways. We are especially thankful for those who work in the leader- ship development arm of the Association. We remember Marsha Foster Boyd and William Myers, whose work in leadership development paved the way for the formation of the Chief Academic Officers Society and for this volume, who guided both ventures in their early years, and for Stephen Gra- ham, who has supported this work over the past three years since the first es- say was submitted in 2008. We remember with affection Karen Kuder, who keeps such careful records of CAOS proceedings, who does so much to pre- pare for meetings large and small, and whose welcoming smile is always so appreciated. We are grateful, as always, to Daniel Aleshire, whose never-fail- ing encouragement and inspirational reflections on theological education and the work of its leaders are such a blessing. His words conclude this vol- ume, and we believe that those who read them will return to them again and again as a source of both challenge and grace. We are deeply grateful to the colleagues who accepted the invitation to reflect on their ministry of theological leadership, and for their patience with the protracted process of bringing such a large project to fulfillment. It has been quipped that nations have risen and fallen since this project began. The institutional positions and even sometimes the institutional affiliations of our contributors have changed over the three-year process of writing and editing this book, and certainly theological education itself has weathered some severe storms since the project began. It is a snapshot of “a community of practice” at work. Eliza Smith Brown, Director, External Relations and Communications of ATS, deserves special recognition.
