Berlin -- March, 2015

"This year, we’re not only excited to have the largest number of German artists ever, but also a selection that more than ever before shows the true spirit of Germany and its diverse talents,” says James Minor, General Manager of the SXSW Music Festival. “Electronic artists and DJs ranging from Matias Aguayo, Lena Wilikens, and Christian S from Cómeme to Boris and to notable newcomers such as Fjaak, Magic Island, Ωracles, and Camera not only represent this diversity, but also encapsulate everything that I love about German music, past and present.”

James Minor, SXSW Music

“Germany has always played an important role in SXSW, and this year is clearly no exception," said Minor. Minor is excited about the thrilling

development of German artists, especially talented newcomer bands at SXSW. Additionally, Reeperbahn Festival and Musicboard Berlin curate and offer a rich diversity in music one evening each within the official SXSW program.

The most talked about act hailing from Germany at this years’ SXSW is Milky Chance. The highly anticipated duo, originating from Kassel, will continue to build momentum after their SXSW appearance with a multitude of media events and over 40 concerts starting in Austin and continuing through the United States and Canada until the end of May.

Wunderbar Showcase, German Haus

Without exception and keeping in tune with tradition, the Wunderbar showcase, held by Germany’s joint presentation and Initiative Musik, highlights three bands to play in front of international bookers, agents and journalists. Included is the trio Kadavar, which has built a commendable reputation with its authentic 70s doom sound.

Not to be missed are newcomers Ωracles with their enthusiasm for psychedelic rock and disco. While creating rippling effects in 2014 for music fans at Reeperbahn Festival and CMJ in New York City, they captivated audiences with their very distinctive sound. British rock star and front-man for the Libertines, Pete Doherty effectively summarized the band: "They're shit-hot!"

Fjaak

The third and final act of the Wunderbar showcase is the trio Fjaak, who recently signed with ’s label Monkeytown

Records. Fjaak, making their debut appearance on the SXSW stage, display their artistry by using analog technology exclusively. "For our hardware live-set jam session, we will use a modular system, a sampler, and a drum machine instead of a computer."

The Cologne label Cómeme will be hosting a label showcase with their top performers. Included in the lineup is producer and DJ Lena Willikens, who is known for her eclectic selection of music. For Willikens, the tour alongside label mates Matias Aguayo and Christian S. is an important and exciting experience because they can tap into the US market. "For me, Cómeme does not only stand for sore muscles after a night of too much dancing, but it’s always for surprises and a unique, rare sound. It is important to be internationally known as a label, even though we are already active in Europe and Latin America. But, of course we want to be equally as present in the US," said Willikens.

Lena Willikens

Since 2010, Initiative Musik has coordinated the German presentation at SXSW and exposed German bands in Austin, thus making SXSW the largest international music export project of Germany. This year, Initiative Musik supports Kadavar, Ωracles and Fjaak during the Wunderbar showcase by providing travel allowances on behalf of the German presentation. Joining these artists are Lena Willikens, Laupaire, Mantar, Magic Island, A Pony Named Olga, and Camera who are also supported by Initiative Musik through the Short Tour Funding program which targets performances abroad.
