She infamously cut her teeth working at clubs in Berlin's nascent techno scene of the 1990s. She ended the decade by forming BPitch Control, an indisputably killer label that boasts a roll call of boundary-pushing, international producers such as Telefon Tel Aviv, Apparat, Fuckpony, and Modeselektor. Since 2001, she's released eight full-lengths and dozens of 12-inches of her own hard-to-classify breed of techno, ranging from cold, mechanical glitches to moments of lush dance floor dreaminess. She's designed her own clothing line, as well. Allien truly helped put her hometown on the map for electronic music, and is constantly inspiring other DJs and producers. We spoke with her via email in advance of her set at M ovement this year. Metro Times: What's the story behind your stage surname, "Allien"? The media could not be loaded, either Ellen Allien: Back in the day, there was a bar called Fischlabor in Berlin, because the server or network failed or where I started to DJ. A friend of mine who was a barkeeper there always because the format is not supported. told me that my music sounded like it was from outer space, like in the very X first Alien movie. So he just started to call me Ellen Allien — Ellen from outer space. The promoters then just took this name for the first show I did at E- Werk. I thought it was such a nice and natural way to find a DJ name, when a friend calls you this because of the sounds you play. BEST THINGS TO DO IN DETROIT MT: How do you yourself describe your sound? MUSIC Allien: The sound in my DJ sets I would describe as freaky, dirty, analogue, TODAY TOMORROW THIS WEEKEND Berlin acid techno. My productions have different concepts for each album. We lived together in a squat, and we made MORE music together, playing different instruments ... jam sessions. Later, I bought records, and then I started to play with an 808. I n the first years I played at E-Werk Berlin and Tresor's house floor Globus. Most of my gigs were in Germany and around Germany. Then, after my first album Stadtkind came out in 2001, I started playing worldwide. My label BPitch Control was founded in 1999. M T: You've recently re-released LI Sm on vinyl and you're going to release Tur n Off Your Mind as an LP, as well. What do you think of the vinyl resurgence? Allien: LI Sm is a 45-minute soundtrack. I thought that some people might be happy to have it on vinyl. I love vinyl, I collect vinyl, and, if I have the chance, I play as much vinyl as possible in the club. To me, the special sound of vinyl is magical. I love to have vinyl at home, to see the artwork, to hold it in my hands, and put it on the decks. I do that. I want to spend time with the music that I love. I t's kind of a celebration, and it reminds me of my childhood, when I had my own rituals. For example, I often opened my windows while I played music because I wanted my neighbors to hear it too. MT: What brought you into the fashion industry? Allien: I am just producing streetwear, nothing more. I do wear T-shirts a lot, NEWEST SLIDESHOWS and I am driven to create a really perfect shirt with the right material, design, and cut. T-shirts are also something I collect, along with sneakers and records. But the music will always have first place. I t just has the biggest impact on me. MT: Will you be selling your products at Movement this year? Allien: Ahhh, I have never thought about that! Great idea. FESTIVAL M T: M ovement is obviously a Detroit-based festival, and I 've read that Detroit has influenced some of your work. What about the Motor City sparks your interest and your own creativity? Allien: Yes. The U.K. sound and Detroit sound had a lot of influence on me. As a kid, I started DJing at Tresor on the Globus floor, mostly house. I 've seen a lot of DJs from Detroit, and at Planet, another floor, a lot of U.K. DJs. There was a connection between the U.K., Detroit, and Berlin. I n the U.S., the beats were groovier, with more melodies and words. But the ideas and the creative and emotional impact the music had were really the same, which also SPECIAL ISSUES results from using the same instruments and technique. There is a big revival of '90s music right now, in fashion and music. The music is still made on mostly the same gear as in the '90s. I t's the computers that are faster. MADE IN MICHIGAN The next musical revolution will emerge when there is a completely new tool for making music, but until then, I will celebrate my classics and all of the great new music. I am really happy to play M ovement. I t is such a great opportunity for Detroit: bringing people back into the city where so much great and influential music has been made, (such as) the Motown sounds, the blues, and jazz. THE PEOPLE ISSUE Black dance music just kicks my body. I t is so physical. When Derrick May is onstage playing, I can just stand still and the music is just taking me with him. SUMMER GUIDE MT: Who are your favorite artists from the Detroit music scene? Allien: Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin. Both have had an enormous impact on all of us. Juan Atkins, B12, Cybotron, Underground Resistance, Aux88, Derrick May, Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Aaliyah, Carl Craig, Kero, Kevin Saunderson, Elvin Jones, Delano Smith — this is all music I adore. All of this has had a BEST OF DETROIT 2018 huge impact on me, and it is a great emotional journey. The story goes hand-in-hand with Apparat’s description of “Running” in that the song is about being part of a mass that constantly needs to move to function, but a mass that’s not deciding directions by itself. Quickly admitting defeat, I retreated to my listening studio (bedroom) and immersed myself in some of the fantastic records that will be hitting the record store shelves this October. By JOHN BITTLES We have the UK house of Huxley, the indie bleakness of Grouper, the disco diva-isms of Munk, the techno bass of Distal and so much more. But really, in a month when there is, finally, a new album by Glaswegian duo Slam, there is only one place we can begin. Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle have long been established as bona fide legends of the house and techno scene! Their record label Soma is over 400 releases old, their DJ sets at clubs like The Sub Club and The Arches in Glasgow are discussed with an air of awed reverence, and, as Slam, the duo have released some of the finest electronic music known to man. And now, in the year 2014 they give us their first album in seven years with the deep and moody brilliance of Reverse Proceed. The cinematic ambience of Tokyo Subway, Visual Capture and the title track open proceedings and are the perfect introduction to the deliciously deep sounds to come. As an important moment in history, online body performances and virtual spaces aim to complement and substitute social experiences in physical environments. The field of study relating digital technology to club cultures is timely, as virtual raving is changing social bodies’ interactions. Life has gone online for the sake of upholding socialization, as people find themselves in isolation – in a hybrid experience of the digital and material. To assess these changes in social life, this thesis uses an auto ethnographical case study on virtual raving and interviews with rave participants, and deploys Affordance Theory. The affordances accounted for are those of ‘settings’, ‘socialization’, ‘entertainment’, and ‘mobility’. The analysis demonstrates the possibilities and problems of transferring the meditative and social bodily experiences associated with raving, to virtual environments. The resulting discussion addresses issues of global accessibility, virtual raves, and what these mean for a techno raving sub culture, and the people who participate in it. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

Club cul- ture began in the 60s, entered its heyday in the 90s and began to wither in the 00s. Today its existence is bleak. With ever more distance, it’s becoming increasingly clear what made club culture. The exhibition and catalogue Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – To- day (2018) at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, as well as the documentary book Der Klang der Familie: Berlin, Techno und die Wende (2014), an oral history project by Fe- lix Denk and Sven von Thülen, consider the nuts and bolts of club culture: the history of its spaces and how German reunification worked decisively in its favor. At the beginning of 1995, I touched the plasma ball in Globus, the top room of Berlin’s Tresor. Naive and boundlessly fascinated as I watched the colorful electric charges pour out from the sphere into my palm, I knew that I was in the right place at the right time 1. What I didn’t know, however, is what was new, what differed. I gave myself over to Tresor with Marcos Lopez, WMF with Kid Paul and E-Werk with Westbam. They laid the founda- tion for the years of clubbing that followed; DJ’ing with different music styles and in different scenes; running a record store; organizing countless parties—to this day with my current involvement with a collective that runs a club and me producing electronic music for the dance floor.

Lo è per la statura dei singoli protagonisti: i Modeselektor fin dal loro debutto, con la loro techno creativa e piena di colpi di scena, si sono guadagnati i favori della stampa specializzata ma anche di star come Thom Yorke (prima loro fan e poi direttamente collaboratore), Apparat dal canto suo sia come solista che in collaborazione con Ellen Allien si è guadagnato la fama di producer incredibilmente bravo e sensibile nello sposare elettronica, ritmi e fortissimo senso melodico. Risultato: entrambi ormai, ad ogni apparizione italiana, radunano pubblici foltissimi e inanellano sold out. Moderat diventa il modo migliore per unire il potenziale artistico di queste due entità così importanti. Non si sovrappongono fra di loro in questo progetto, diventano invece perfettamente complementari: la potenza ritmica e l'impatto ipnotico dei Modeselektor, la preziosità dei ricami armonici e melodici di Apparat. Un equilibrio perfetto, a cui si arriva peraltro non senza fatica. Il loro primo lavoro in comune, l'ep “Auf Kosten Der Gesundheit” (2003), racconta già dal titolo (“Al costo della salute”) quanto è stato complesso arrivare alla giusta misura e alla giusta interazione, figlie di sfibranti sedute in studio di registrazione all'insegna del più maniacale perfezionismo.

    Sound Circuits are immersive sound walks inspiring reflection on the social dynamics of public spaces in Berlin and around the themes of memory, fear, freedom, rhythm and health. They will be installed in different Berlin neighbourhoods between October 5th and Nov 5th and are organized by the course of Sonic Arts Festival Eufonia. In four sound walks, more than 15 artists present their sound narratives accessible through QR codes inviting the public to explore the city through sound.
