FECHA DE RECEPCIÓN: 5 de Abril de 2017 FECHA DE ACEPTAPCIÓN: 13 de Mayo de 2017 "25 An Argument against Athletes as Political Role Models1 Shawn E. Klein Arizona State University (USA) Abstract A common refrain in and outside academia is that prominent sports figures ought to engage more in the public discourse about political issues. This idea parallels the idea that athletes ought to be role models in general. This paper first examines and critiques the “athlete as role model” argument and then applies this critique to the “athlete as political activist” argument. Appealing to the empirical political psychological literature, the paper sketches an argument that athlete activism might actually do more harm than good. Keywords: role model, athlete, activism, obligation, political psychology 1. Introduction Colin Kapernick is both widely criticized and widely praised for his controversial protest during the 2016 NFL season.2 Part of the praise comes from the idea that it is good for people to speak out on political issues.3 The hope is that such activism leads to ‘national conversations’ about hard and divisive topics.4 Maybe if more athletes spoke out politically, like Kaepernick, people in the US would not be as divided and partisan and could work together to solve real problems.

I watched the movie first and I really loved it but I didn't know there was a book about it. During apartheid, the all-white Springboks and their fans had belted out racist fight songs, and blacks would come to Springbok matches to cheer for whatever team was playing against them. Yet Mandela believed that the Springboks could embody--and engage-- the new South Africa. The black South Africans generally viewed the gold and green uniforms of the Springboks, along with the old national flag and national anthem, as a symbol of the oppression they had suffered under decades of apartheid. To have that question answered was one reason I read this book aside from having it selected in a book group. We were amiable colleagues at the time. Rafael Nadal. But he knew that South Africa was still dangerously divided by almost fifty years of apartheid. Nov 15, Nora Lockett rated it it was amazing. Watching the nation of South Africa change was awe-inspiring. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Now, in an attempt to reassure the defeated minority that they had a rightful place in the new order, Mandela agreed to host the rugby World Cup games in South Africa.

  • Sports, Nationalism and Symbolic Efficiency: the Film Invictus
International Journal of Research in Humanities and Social Studies Volume 3, Issue 1, January 2016, PP 18-24 ISSN 2394-6288 (Print) & ISSN 2394-6296 (Online) Sports, Nationalism and Symbolic Efficiency: The Film Invictus Luis Otávio Teles Assumpção João Batista Lopes da Silva Noriberto Barbosa da Silva and Nanci Maria de França Stricto Sensu Post-Graduate Program in Physical Education (PPGEF), Catholic University of Brasília, Brasilia-DF, Brazil ABSTRACT In this article, we study the film Invictus, directed by Clint Eastwood. We recognize in it the potential to propose and encourage many themes worthy of more careful analysis, especially with regard to the ‘sociological imagination’ of a sport. The film uses rugby as its referenced sport; however, it does not address issues related to tactical, technical, physical and motor aspects of this sport. In reality, it proposes and discusses one of the most important sociological functions that promotes, justifies and legitimizes the existence of sports activities, namely, the capacity for social integration. In the case of Invictus, this theme is associated with a very delicate moment in the history of South Africa—apartheid. This theme is extremely rich and stimulating for reflecting on discussions regarding the sociology and anthropology of sports. Sports and their symbolic identities are beautiful themes to be explored, and Invictus certainly contributes a great deal toward relevant discussions. Keywords: Sports; Film; Sociology of sports; Social integration; Symbolic identities; Anthropology of sports; INTRODUCTION Film performs many functions. It can be viewed for leisure and relaxation or for personal and mutual entertainment. Additionally, movie watching can be serious hobbies, or activities that involve friends and family.

The signals on Amtrak’s New York to Washington line have failed, pre- cipitating a head-on collision. Air traffic control at LAX has collapsed.” and other similar events had taken place.2 Whether the reality matches the fiction is open to question, but it is notable that upon the release of Live Free or Die Hard, Eugene Kaspersky, ÃThis article was coauthored with Kevin Jones and Hugh Soulsby of Airbus Group Innovations, Andrew Blyth and Peter Eden of the University of South Wales, and Peter Burnap and Yulia Cherdantseva of Cardiff University. 1Live Free or Die Hard (20th Century Fox, 2007).
