An Argument Against Athletes As Political Role Models

Revista de Filosofía, Ética y Derecho del Deporte, vol. 10. FECHA DE RECEPCIÓN: 5 de Abril de 2017 FECHA DE ACEPTAPCIÓN: 13 de Mayo de 2017 "25 An Argument against Athletes as Political Role Models1 Shawn E. Klein Arizona State University (USA) Abstract A common refrain in and outside academia is that prominent sports figures ought to engage more in the public discourse about political issues. This idea parallels the idea that athletes ought to be role models in general. This paper first examines and critiques the “athlete as role model” argument and then applies this critique to the “athlete as political activist” argument. Appealing to the empirical political psychological literature, the paper sketches an argument that athlete activism might actually do more harm than good. Keywords: role model, athlete, activism, obligation, political psychology 1. Introduction Colin Kapernick is both widely criticized and widely praised for his controversial protest during the 2016 NFL season.2 Part of the praise comes from the idea that it is good for people to speak out on political issues.3 The hope is that such activism leads to ‘national conversations’ about hard and divisive topics.4 Maybe if more athletes spoke out politically, like Kaepernick, people in the US would not be as divided and partisan and could work together to solve real problems. -

Rational choice hypotheses are developed and tested using panel data covering more than 100 countries over a period of 20 years. Several strategies, in addition to security measures, are shown to significantly reduce the probability of politicians being attacked or killed: extended institutional and governance quality, democracy, voice and accountability, a well functioning system of law and order, decentralization via the division of power and federalism, larger cabinet size and strengthened civil society. There is also support for a contagion effect. JEL-Classification: D01, D70, K14, K42, Z10. Keywords: Assassinations, rational choice, governance, democracy, dictatorship, deterrence, protection. 2 I. INTRODUCTION On 22 November 1963, news of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination shocked the whole world, leaving a lasting imprint on the collective psyche (Zelizer 1992). The murder of politicians and other noted persons has been an important historical topic in our society. -

By Means of the Gun: African States after Assassination by Allison Solomon B.A. in Political Science, May 2008, Mercer University A Thesis submitted to The Faculty of Elliott School of International Affairs of The George Washington University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts January 31, 2011 Thesis directed by Paul Williams Associate Professor of International Affairs © Copyright 2011 by Allison Solomon All rights reserved ii Acknowledgments The author wishes to thank Dr. Paul Williams and Dr. Gina Lambright for their guidance and support in completing this thesis. The author would also like to thank Aaron McKay and Ginny Solomon for listening and advising throughout the creative process. iii Abstract of Thesis By Means of the Gun: African States after Assassination Head of state assassinations have been rife across an independent Africa, yet a comprehensive analysis of the political impacts of these events has been lacking. This thesis seeks not only to assess the impacts of the 27 cases of assassination, but also to identify the factors most likely to influence the results. Gaining insight into these issues will provide a new perspective on the African state, and may even offer practical guidance for policymakers dealing with post-assassination states. In order to approach the problem, a comparative historical case study analysis was employed using nine cases to illustrate a range of impacts. The cases were also distinct in terms of governance system, historical decade, economic environment, and geography. The impacts of the cases were then scored using ten political indicators (political violence, ethnic strain, civil war, etc.) to determine impact. -

The Monroe Doctrine; the Polk Doctrine; Anarchism.*
YALE LAW JOURNAL. THE MONROE DOCTRINE; THE POLK DOCTRINE; ANARCHISM.* There is a thought to-day in the minds of all of us to which I shall not refrain from giving expression at the outset. It is one of gratitude for the services, regret for the departure, and hope for the unbroken rest and enjoyment of the retiring Dean of the Yale Law School. My gratitude goes to Dr. Wayland as a sort of inheritance, for over forty years ago, in a remote Western college, my first lessons in Moral Science and Intellectual Philosophy were taught from his honored father's text-books; yours is of that more intimate character that comes from seeing the son take the torch from the father's hands and bear it blazing forward over your own pathway. May I venture further on an expression of the pleasure given to a great body of college-bred men throughout the length and breadth of the United States, and especially to almost every man who in the past quarter of a century has had to do, in however humble a way, with the foreign service of his country, by the continued duty here of the present acting Dean? To those who learned Morals and International Law from the tongue or pen of a former eminent President of Yale, no work of a Woolsey can fail to be weighty. eProfession, In looking over some of the impressive addresses The of aw. called out by your Commencement in later years, not Trade, of Law. I have observed that the learned speakers have generally had something to say more directly to the graduating class, and that this has been reserved for the conclusion of their remarks. -

PLAYING THE ENEMY: NELSON MANDELA AND THE GAME THAT MADE A NATION PDF, EPUB, EBOOK John Carlin | 288 pages | 01 Mar 2010 | ATLANTIC BOOKS | 9781848876590 | English | London, United Kingdom Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation PDF Book His plan was ambitious if not far-fetched: use the national rugby team, the Springboks—long an embodiment of white-supremacist rule—to embody and engage a new South Africa as they prepared to host the World Cup. I watched the movie first and I really loved it but I didn't know there was a book about it. During apartheid, the all-white Springboks and their fans had belted out racist fight songs, and blacks would come to Springbok matches to cheer for whatever team was playing against them. Yet Mandela believed that the Springboks could embody--and engage-- the new South Africa. The black South Africans generally viewed the gold and green uniforms of the Springboks, along with the old national flag and national anthem, as a symbol of the oppression they had suffered under decades of apartheid. To have that question answered was one reason I read this book aside from having it selected in a book group. We were amiable colleagues at the time. Rafael Nadal. But he knew that South Africa was still dangerously divided by almost fifty years of apartheid. Nov 15, Nora Lockett rated it it was amazing. Watching the nation of South Africa change was awe-inspiring. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Now, in an attempt to reassure the defeated minority that they had a rightful place in the new order, Mandela agreed to host the rugby World Cup games in South Africa. -
