British Champion Daniel Purvis Has Taken the European Championships Men's All-Around Bronze Medal in a Nail Biting Competition British champion Daniel Purvis has taken the European Championships men’s all-around bronze medal in a nail biting competition in Montpellier. Heading to the final apparatus, the pommel horse, just .007 of the bronze Dan knew that he had to remain composed and he pulled out a stunning routine to clinch his second European all-around medal having also taken bronze in 2011. The gold medal went to Verniaiev of Ukraine with Belyavskiy of Russia in silver and Britain’s Sam Oldham in sixth position. Sam produced a masterful high bar performance amongst his highlights, having suffered injury at the Commonwealth Games last year he was delighted to be back competing in a major championships all-around final and will have hopes of being amongst the medals in high bar on Sunday. Dan Purvis demonstrated his coolness under pressure throughout the competition with no major errors and highlights coming on floor and parallel bars as he totalled 87.423 points overall for the bronze medal. Reaction Dan Purvis was delighted afterwards saying: "This means so much to me, to be selected to do all around for Great Britain is a big challenge and to have this medal round me neck is amazing. There's some really strong young talent coming through so I've had to work really hard to stay up. My maths isn't the best but I knew I needed to end well on pommel and it worked out, I'm really happy" Sam commented after: “I’m disappointed with parallel bars which cost me a lot but really pleased how I pulled it back especially high bar. Incredibly happy to have made these championships and been in the final now the focus is on the high bar looking forward to Sunday" Competition report Daniel Purvis began his final on the rings. He put in a really solid opening performance, the rings swinging slightly as he held his positions he scored 14.433 to equal his qualifying routine. Dan had trouble on vault in qualifying but found his form in the final to score 14.691 for his two and a half twisting routine. His consistency continued on parallel bars putting in one of the strongest routine of the final with great body lines in handstand on two and then one bar and solid dismount scoring him 15.000 and taking him into second place at the halfway mark. High bar was controlled, his one arm “giant” around the bar impressing the crowd, he landed with a step and scored solid 13.800 marks. On floor Dan was in outstanding form, his tumbling was high on difficulty but he made it look easy with near perfect landings throughout scoring a huge 14.933 points that left Dan heading to pommel just .007 points of bronze. He produced under pressure a superb routine, great rhythm round the pommel and a strong dismount to cheers from his teammates in the crowd a score of 14.566 and total of 87.423 points. Opening on rings Sam Oldham also looked to get off to a good start, he had to fight hard in places to hold his positions and had step on his landing for a solid 13.966. His vault was neat and precise bettering his qualification routine to score him 14.566 whilst on parallel bars he had to fight to reach handstand at one point and took big step on dismount scoring 13.433. Sam unleashed some huge skills on the high bar, consecutively releasing and catching het bar in a series that wowed the crowd, his dismount was landed stone dead for a score of 14.791 that saw hit shoot up the rankings. His floor routine was equally impressive with huge twisting tumbles all well controlled and flair work that the crowd loved to see, his score of 14.766 one of the highest of the final, his floor and high bar taking up to sixth in the rankings. His pommel routine continued his surge in the final, very smooth work with a perfect dismount giving him 14.666 and confirming sixth place with a total of 86.188 marks. The championships continue on Saturday with the first of the apparatus finals with Kristian Thomas competing on floor, Louis Smith on pommel, Courtney Tulloch on rings and Claudia Fragapane and Ellie Downie up on vault and Becky and Ellie Downie on bars. .

    03/10/13: Britain’s Max Whitlock and Daniel Purvis produced outstanding displays in the men’s all-around final at the 2013 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp to finish in 4th and 7th places respectively. The British boys both completed clean routines over the gruelling six apparatus and remained composed in the tense atmosphere to put themselves right up amongst the world greatest gymnasts The gold medal was taken once again by Japanese sensation Kohei Uchimura, the Olympic champion winning his 4th straight world all-around title with a supreme performance to score a huge 91.990 points teammate Ryohei Kato the silver with 90.032 and Fabien Hambuechen of Germany scored 89.332 for the bronze. Max said: “I’m very happy with that, coming in to my first World Championships and leaving with 4th place, competing amongst the very best its fantastic. Going up first on pommel there was some pressure but I went all out for it and I’m really happy to have got through it, and the whole competition, cleanly.” Dan said: “I’m absolutely delighted with that performance to be up there in the top 8 in the world is amazing, that’s probably the hardest all-around competition I’ve ever done with a really high standard from everyone. I can’t really pick any major faults to be honest, of course there always small things but overall I’m really pleased and proud of that performance” Max began his competition on his favourite piece pommel, on which he is Olympic bronze medallist.

    Britain’s gymnasts have once again made history as the men’s team of Max Whitlock, Louis Smith MBE, Kristian Thomas, Nile Wilson, Brinn Bevan and Daniel Purvis have taken silver at the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow, our greatest ever artistic gymnastics World Championships team result. The GB men, who have never taken a world team medal, finished with 270.345, just 0.473 behind the newly crowned champions Japan (270.818) and 0.386 ahead of former world champions China (269.959). The silver medal was sealed with the last performances of the championships as the Hydro Arena awaited the placing’s, finally the scoreboard revealing the result and again confirming Great Britain’s standing amongst the best teams in world gymnastics The British men’s competition got off to great start with Louis Smith performing a difficult pommel routine under the pressure of opening the campaign scoring 15.333. Brinn Bevan’s huge shout of “come on” to the crowd showed how happy he was with his pommel with Max Whitlock last up produced an outstanding routine for our top score of 15.700. GB then moved to rings where Max Whitlock was again in good form scoring 14.400, the roar of the crowd indicated Scotsman Dan Purvis was next up and he was solid for 14.333, Nile Wilson the last up with an impressive 14.933.     Britain’s finest artistic gymnasts will take on the world’s best at the 2013 Glasgow World Cup as the full line-ups reveal a star-studded cast of competitors for the event on December 7th at Emirates Arena.     07/12/13: Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine and Larissa Iordache of Romania took the titles in a closely fought battle at the 2013 Glasgow World Cup from the Emirates Arena. In front of a capacity crowd both the men’s and women’s events went down to the final routines with Great Britain’s Daniel Purvis just beaten to the men’s crown and USA’s reigning champion Elizabeth Price also narrowly taking silver. Verniaiev took his second World Cup gold in succession with another masterful display, despite a fall on pommel horse, to post a winning score of 89.798. Dan Purvis (89.131) lead the competition for most of the day but couldn't quite hold on as Verniaiev steadily clawed back the points with brilliant vault and parallel bars routines and a solid final high bar performance. Andriy Likhovitskiy (88.597) of Belarus took the bronze with Brit Sam Oldham in 7th. The Iordache versus Price battle was equally as tight. In the end it was a mistake on her vault landing that cost Price with Iordache’s consistent and well performed routines proving enough for the gold medal 57.932 to 57.365. Italy’s Vanessa Ferrari (56.633) also put in a very strong all-around performance to place in bronze with Britain's Ruby Harrold and Raer Theaker in 7th and 8th places.     19/03/13: The Men’s and Women’s British Championships is the most prestigious event on the artistic gymnastics national calendar, taking place from the 22nd-24th March 2013 at Echo Arena in Liverpool. The championships see the country’s top gymnasts battle for coveted British titles; the showpiece event being the crowning of the new senior all-around champions. Over the three day event, which includes competition for juniors and seniors, in both the all- around – where gymnasts compete on all pieces of apparatus- and individual apparatus competitions, the crowd will be treated to awe-inspiring displays of strength, suppleness, stamina, coordination and courage. The battle for senior titles In 2012 Southport’s Daniel Purvis took the men’s title for the third year in a row and once again he will be looking to clinch the trophy, however the competition will be fierce. Dan said “Last year’s British Championships was fantastic - taking the title and also individual medals in such a brilliant arena, and hopefully this year I can do the same. There’s no doubt the competition is really high and with some juniors moving up to senior level it’s not going to be easy but I’ll be battling all the way. British male gymnasts are amongst the very best in the world as demonstrated by the senior and junior teams being crowned European Champions in 2012, along with Team GB boys claiming an historic team bronze and two individual medals in London.
