19/03/13: the Men's and Women's British Championships Is the Most 19/03/13: The Men’s and Women’s British Championships is the most prestigious event on the artistic gymnastics national calendar, taking place from the 22nd-24th March 2013 at Echo Arena in Liverpool. The championships see the country’s top gymnasts battle for coveted British titles; the showpiece event being the crowning of the new senior all-around champions. Over the three day event, which includes competition for juniors and seniors, in both the all- around – where gymnasts compete on all pieces of apparatus- and individual apparatus competitions, the crowd will be treated to awe-inspiring displays of strength, suppleness, stamina, coordination and courage. The battle for senior titles In 2012 Southport’s Daniel Purvis took the men’s title for the third year in a row and once again he will be looking to clinch the trophy, however the competition will be fierce. Dan said “Last year’s British Championships was fantastic - taking the title and also individual medals in such a brilliant arena, and hopefully this year I can do the same. There’s no doubt the competition is really high and with some juniors moving up to senior level it’s not going to be easy but I’ll be battling all the way. British male gymnasts are amongst the very best in the world as demonstrated by the senior and junior teams being crowned European Champions in 2012, along with Team GB boys claiming an historic team bronze and two individual medals in London. Dan’s Olympic teammate’s last summer Sam Oldham and Max Whitlock will also be in the running for the all-around title, while Kristian Thomas unfortunately suffered injury at the recent French World Cup and will be reviewed by the chief medical officer this week. Daniel Keatings who just missed out on a Team GB spot last summer will also be out to impress along with several promising first year seniors such as Frank Baines and Courtney Tulloch. In the women’s event, 2011 champion and London Olympian Hannah Whelan, who recently captured the English title, will be looking to reclaim the overall crown while attention is sure to be on rising 15-year-old star Gabby Jupp in her first major senior event. Hannah said “I’m really looking forward to competing again in front of the home crowd and atmosphere which is always great in Liverpool, to have the boys and girls competing together will also really add to the event and be great for the fans. It would be great to reclaim my title but I know there are plenty of younger gymnasts coming up who are threats. I feel good though and will definitely be aiming to impress.” With Hannah’s Team GB teammates Beth Tweddle and Imogen Cairns taking a break from competitive gymnastics and last year’s all-around champion Rebecca Tunney not defending her title as she recovers from injury, the race for the top spot could be wide open. Established gymnasts to look out for include Ruby Harrold, Nottingham pair Rebecca Downie and Niamh Rippin along with first year seniors Charlie Fellows, Georgina Hockenhull, Angel Romaeo and Raer Theaker. There will be an opportunity for media to interview gymnasts in the hunt for senior titles following “podium training” 9.30-10.30am at Echo Arena on Friday 22nd.     Eighteen Gymnasts Selected to Team GB for London 2012 Olympics The British Olympic Association (BOA) has announced today the 18 gymnasts who will represent Team GB across all three gymnastic disciplines at the London 2012 Olympic Games later this month. The announcement was made today at Loughborough University, where the Team GB Preparation Camp is located. The Artistic gymnasts will kick off Team GB’s gymnastics campaign at London 2012, with the competition taking place from the 28th July to the 2nd August, and from the 5th to the 7th August at the North Greenwich Arena. The Trampoline Gymnastics competition will also take place at the same venue, on the 3rd and 4th of August. Rhythmic Gymnastics will be held at Wembley Arena from the 9th to the 12th of August.     03/10/13: Britain’s Max Whitlock and Daniel Purvis produced outstanding displays in the men’s all-around final at the 2013 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp to finish in 4th and 7th places respectively. The British boys both completed clean routines over the gruelling six apparatus and remained composed in the tense atmosphere to put themselves right up amongst the world greatest gymnasts The gold medal was taken once again by Japanese sensation Kohei Uchimura, the Olympic champion winning his 4th straight world all-around title with a supreme performance to score a huge 91.990 points teammate Ryohei Kato the silver with 90.032 and Fabien Hambuechen of Germany scored 89.332 for the bronze. Max said: “I’m very happy with that, coming in to my first World Championships and leaving with 4th place, competing amongst the very best its fantastic. Going up first on pommel there was some pressure but I went all out for it and I’m really happy to have got through it, and the whole competition, cleanly.” Dan said: “I’m absolutely delighted with that performance to be up there in the top 8 in the world is amazing, that’s probably the hardest all-around competition I’ve ever done with a really high standard from everyone. I can’t really pick any major faults to be honest, of course there always small things but overall I’m really pleased and proud of that performance” Max began his competition on his favourite piece pommel, on which he is Olympic bronze medallist.

    Britain’s gymnasts have once again made history as the men’s team of Max Whitlock, Louis Smith MBE, Kristian Thomas, Nile Wilson, Brinn Bevan and Daniel Purvis have taken silver at the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow, our greatest ever artistic gymnastics World Championships team result. The GB men, who have never taken a world team medal, finished with 270.345, just 0.473 behind the newly crowned champions Japan (270.818) and 0.386 ahead of former world champions China (269.959). The silver medal was sealed with the last performances of the championships as the Hydro Arena awaited the placing’s, finally the scoreboard revealing the result and again confirming Great Britain’s standing amongst the best teams in world gymnastics The British men’s competition got off to great start with Louis Smith performing a difficult pommel routine under the pressure of opening the campaign scoring 15.333. Brinn Bevan’s huge shout of “come on” to the crowd showed how happy he was with his pommel with Max Whitlock last up produced an outstanding routine for our top score of 15.700. GB then moved to rings where Max Whitlock was again in good form scoring 14.400, the roar of the crowd indicated Scotsman Dan Purvis was next up and he was solid for 14.333, Nile Wilson the last up with an impressive 14.933. Brinn Bevan on vault showed no nerves in his first World Championships his double pike Tsukahara scoring 15.133. Max triple twisted to 15.033 and Kristian Thomas followed with a double piked Yurchenko vault with 15.333.

    Britain’s finest artistic gymnasts will take on the world’s best at the 2013 Glasgow World Cup as the full line-ups reveal a star-studded cast of competitors for the event on December 7th at Emirates Arena. Leading the British campaign for World Cup glory will be Scotsman Daniel Purvis and his Olympic team bronze medal winning compatriot Sam Oldham, whilst on the women’s side Ruby Harrold one of the most talked about gymnasts on the world scene, will aim to end her year on a high note. Facing up to the British contingent will be the 2012 World Cup champion Elizabeth Price, who returns with US teammate and World Championship parallel bars bronze medal winner John Orozco. Two-time Olympian and former all-around World Champion Vanessa Ferrari from Italy and Romania’s 17 year old sensation Larisa Iordache will also be ones to watch out for in the women’s event. The men’s field will also include the 2013 European all-around bronze medal winner Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine and Belarus’s Andre Likhovitskiy, who placed 4th on high bar, just behind Sam Oldham at the 2013 European Championships.
