The calibre of gymnasts really demonstrated the strides forward made by British Gymnastics and their work in partnership with coaches and clubs. The figures below show that 17 Male gymnasts were competing at the English Championships who have at least one International medal. On the girls side there were 9 gymnasts. COMPETITION CATEGORY The Gymnastics Score In the gymnastic the maximum score was the ‘perfect ten’ until it was replaced with the ‘Code of Points system. Here is how it works: * One panel of judges starts from 0, adding points for requirements, difficulty and connections. (D Score) * A second panel of judges starts from 10.0, and deducts for execution and artistry. (E Score) * The final score is determined by adding the difficulty score (D) and the execution score (E). On the scorecard blow are some of the results from the women’s Olympic competition.

    Max Whitlock Has Been Crowned European Pommel Horse Champion

    Max Whitlock has been crowned European pommel horse champion with Sam Oldham taking high bar silver, Kristian Thomas high bar bronze and Daniel Purvis taking floor bronze to cap a superb championship for the British men’s team in Sofia. Olympic pommel bronze medallist Max’s routines have been a class above his competitors all week and this was the same in the final as he took gold with a huge 16.166 points, beating the Olympic champion by some distance. His pommel gold continues a British legacy in this event with Dan Keatings taking the previous two European titles. Sam and Kristian showed all their experience on high bar in a tense competition the British boys showed great composure, skill and determination to take the silver and bronze. Dan’s floor was similarly impressive as he produced a confident stylish fault-free routine to claim the European bronze for the second time having also took the same medal in 2010. Elsewhere Max also placed 5th on floor. The results conclude the men’s European Championships with the seniors also taking team silver and the junior boys team gold, all-around gold and bronze and four gold and four silver medals in event finals. Max summed up his pommel performance saying: “I’m really, really happy. I’ve worked so hard on my routines and am always trying to up my game to stay ahead of the competition. To produce under that level of pressure and expectancy and win ahead of a legend like Kristian Berki feels fantastic. My routine is high on difficulty but I’m never satisfied, from here I’m going to be looking to push on even further, it feels fantastic to have won this medal and I’m determined to go on and win more in the future.” Sam Oldham said after: “I’m almost speechless.

Any comments, suggestions or feedback on this guide can be provided to: Vera Atkinson Media Specialist British Gymnastics E: [email protected] Nanning 2014 – First Olympic Qualifications round for Rio 2016 Halfway between London 2012 and Rio 2016 these World Championships will serve as the first “sieve” through to the next Olympic Games in Brazil. With rejuvenated teams from all over the world and new International Codes of Points for men and for women, this event will indicate what could happen in Rio in two years’ time. Only the top 24 teams for men and for women in Nanning will qualify to the second Olympic Qualification stage – the World Championships in Glasgow in 2015 where the top eight men's and women's teams will qualify automatically for the Rio Olympics.

    03/10/13: Britain’s Max Whitlock and Daniel Purvis produced outstanding displays in the men’s all-around final at the 2013 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp to finish in 4th and 7th places respectively. The British boys both completed clean routines over the gruelling six apparatus and remained composed in the tense atmosphere to put themselves right up amongst the world greatest gymnasts The gold medal was taken once again by Japanese sensation Kohei Uchimura, the Olympic champion winning his 4th straight world all-around title with a supreme performance to score a huge 91.990 points teammate Ryohei Kato the silver with 90.032 and Fabien Hambuechen of Germany scored 89.332 for the bronze. Max said: “I’m very happy with that, coming in to my first World Championships and leaving with 4th place, competing amongst the very best its fantastic. Going up first on pommel there was some pressure but I went all out for it and I’m really happy to have got through it, and the whole competition, cleanly.” Dan said: “I’m absolutely delighted with that performance to be up there in the top 8 in the world is amazing, that’s probably the hardest all-around competition I’ve ever done with a really high standard from everyone. I can’t really pick any major faults to be honest, of course there always small things but overall I’m really pleased and proud of that performance” Max began his competition on his favourite piece pommel, on which he is Olympic bronze medallist.

This early arrival into the Village was to give the Team the maximum amount of training time in the Games environment. The Women and Men’s Teams had a Commonwealth Games and World Championships Training Camp at Lilleshall prior to traveling up to Glasgow. The girls travelled by plane from their respective parts of the country and the boys travelled as a group by coach from Lilleshall.

Go MAD (Make A Difference) Club Development Grades – December 2012 BRITISH MEN’S PERFORMANCE PATHWAY 2013-2016 British Men’s Gymnastics is riding high. The success of the junior and senior national teams throughout the 2009-2012 Olympic cycle culminated with Great Britain Men’s Team winning the Team bronze medal at the London Olympic Games. This historic result was added to with silver and bronze medals at pommel horse. Furthermore, we enjoyed incredible success at the European Championships with both seniors and juniors being crowned Champions of Europe 2012. These results have been replicated across all levels of junior competition, with our young gymnasts winning multiple trophies and championships. Our task is to ensure that this success is sustained through the continuous development of our junior gymnasts through to senior competitors. The Performance Pathway for Men’s Artistic Gymnastics has undergone a complete and thorough overhaul. A great deal of consultation was undertaken and the Men’s Technical Committee is confident that once in place and working, the new structure will satisfy the majority of needs for Clubs and Regions with National aspirations. It is anticipated that throughout the 2013-16 Rio Olympic Cycle a variety of initiatives will be undertaken by Regions. With this streamlined Performance Pathway it is hoped that Regions will take the initiative to create Regional Squad structures (with British Gymnastics support) catering for the performance development of their Clubs and gymnasts.
