Club Development Grades 2013-2016 Men’s Artistic Club Development Grades Published December 2012 SUCCESS Compete at 75-80% of potential Preparation is the key and vital to the successful result. Train to compete, compete as you train. Success and winning is not LUCK!! …. Go MAD (Make A Difference) Club Development Grades – December 2012 BRITISH MEN’S PERFORMANCE PATHWAY 2013-2016 British Men’s Gymnastics is riding high. The success of the junior and senior national teams throughout the 2009-2012 Olympic cycle culminated with Great Britain Men’s Team winning the Team bronze medal at the London Olympic Games. This historic result was added to with silver and bronze medals at pommel horse. Furthermore, we enjoyed incredible success at the European Championships with both seniors and juniors being crowned Champions of Europe 2012. These results have been replicated across all levels of junior competition, with our young gymnasts winning multiple trophies and championships. Our task is to ensure that this success is sustained through the continuous development of our junior gymnasts through to senior competitors. The Performance Pathway for Men’s Artistic Gymnastics has undergone a complete and thorough overhaul. A great deal of consultation was undertaken and the Men’s Technical Committee is confident that once in place and working, the new structure will satisfy the majority of needs for Clubs and Regions with National aspirations. It is anticipated that throughout the 2013-16 Rio Olympic Cycle a variety of initiatives will be undertaken by Regions. With this streamlined Performance Pathway it is hoped that Regions will take the initiative to create Regional Squad structures (with British Gymnastics support) catering for the performance development of their Clubs and gymnasts. Regions should be the focus of our foundations for future excellence, concentrating on performing the Grades with high technical quality. This in turn will underpin the Great Britain National Squad structures. Clubs should support their Region and further progress their gymnasts along the voluntary performance path. Each level of the Grades is critical to the development of sound foundations for progressive gymnastic performance as demonstrated by the success across Europe and the World by British Men’s gymnastics. Note that all judging considerations have been replaced with Performance Considerations. Therefore ALL judging is as per the FIG Code of Points 2013-2016 Cycle 13. Club Development Grades National Elite Grades (Team and Individual) (Team and Individual) Bob Currier Trophy Paul Blakeborough Trophy National Finals National Finals Age Group Age Group GYMNASTS MAY ONLY COMPETE IN ONE PATHWAY IN ANY ONE YEAR BUT MAY Level 6 U14 4/4/3 Level 6 U14 3/3/2 TRANSFER ACROSS IN EITHER DIRECTION IF Level 5 U13 4/4/3 THEIR PERFORMANCE LEVEL REQUIRES IN Level 5 U13 3/3/2 Level 4 U12 5/5/4 SUBSEQUENT YEARS Level 4 U12 4/4/3 Level 3 U11 5/5/4 Level 3 U11 4/4/3 Level 2 U10 6/6/4 Level 2 U10 6/6/4 Level 1 O8/U9 6/6/4 Level 1 O8/U9 6/6/4 Regional entry Regional entry (Individuals accepted) (Individuals accepted) Continued… Club Development Grades – December 2012 Each level progressively develops techniques and themes that will underpin high level performance. The gymnast should develop routines by learning elements following these progressive themes. Technique is common throughout the Performance Pathway. The National Elite Grades have been reworked and will be a significant challenge to even the most talented gymnasts. It is essential that coaches understand the technical pathways for developing skills in order to make the right choices for their gymnasts. To complement the written text a DVD has been produced which will go a long way to clarify the interpretations of the exercises. The DVD shows the exercise construction but does not necessarily restrict enhanced virtuosity in performance. The desire is to put back the ARTISTRY into our title ‘Men’s Artistic Gymnastics’, we have therefore included a short exercise at each level for artistic preparation. Hopefully, coaches and gymnasts will develop this theme in their voluntary exercises. The National Elite Grades will once again become a team competition as well as for individuals and will be the main mechanism for selection into the Elite Performance Squad. The Club Development Grades have also been reworked and will provide a significant challenge, albeit at a slightly reduced performance level. They are seen as a structured development for Clubs and Regions on the pathway to high performance gymnastics. The routines are based on sound gymnastics development yet remain accessible to all levels, across the vast range of gymnastic ability. The Setwork Challenge Competition (Out of Age Setwork) has been removed from the national programme but it is hoped that Regions will consider offering this particular competition option. To complement the written text a DVD has been produced which will go a long way to clarify the interpretations of the exercises. The DVD shows the exercise construction but does not necessarily restrict enhanced virtuosity in their performance. Should gymnasts progress to a high level of competence (>90% success) there is the option to transfer to the National Elite Grades in subsequent years. The following pages give an outline of the expected levels of performance. Judging considerations have been overhauled and simplified and all exercises will now conform solely with FIG Code of Points unless specifically stated. Details of the competition structures will be available in the annual MTC Competition Handbook. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those coaches, gymnasts and judges for their continued dedication and commitment to British Gymnastics. • Max Whitlock Has Been Crowned European Pommel Horse Champion
Max Whitlock has been crowned European pommel horse champion with Sam Oldham taking high bar silver, Kristian Thomas high bar bronze and Daniel Purvis taking floor bronze to cap a superb championship for the British men’s team in Sofia. Olympic pommel bronze medallist Max’s routines have been a class above his competitors all week and this was the same in the final as he took gold with a huge 16.166 points, beating the Olympic champion by some distance. His pommel gold continues a British legacy in this event with Dan Keatings taking the previous two European titles. Sam and Kristian showed all their experience on high bar in a tense competition the British boys showed great composure, skill and determination to take the silver and bronze. Dan’s floor was similarly impressive as he produced a confident stylish fault-free routine to claim the European bronze for the second time having also took the same medal in 2010. Elsewhere Max also placed 5th on floor. The results conclude the men’s European Championships with the seniors also taking team silver and the junior boys team gold, all-around gold and bronze and four gold and four silver medals in event finals. Max summed up his pommel performance saying: “I’m really, really happy. I’ve worked so hard on my routines and am always trying to up my game to stay ahead of the competition. To produce under that level of pressure and expectancy and win ahead of a legend like Kristian Berki feels fantastic. My routine is high on difficulty but I’m never satisfied, from here I’m going to be looking to push on even further, it feels fantastic to have won this medal and I’m determined to go on and win more in the future.” Sam Oldham said after: “I’m almost speechless.

  • England Swept the Gold Medals in the Commonwealth Games Artistic Gymnastics Team Events at the Hydro
England swept the gold medals in the Commonwealth Games artistic gymnastics team events at the Hydro. Both the men’s and women’s line-ups included Olympians and seasoned Great Britain squad gymnasts and it was this depth of world-class experience that paid off. Scotland men’s team could also call upon Olympic gymnasts and this helped them to a historic first ever Commonwealth Team medal as they took silver while the Team Wales girls showed superb team spirit and composure to seal a brilliant bronze. Having competed the first half of the competition on Monday the gymnasts had to complete the job and finish the race for the team medal positions and for individual final places. For the girls it was floor and beam and for the men vault, parallel bars and the high bar. Men’s event.. The English men’s team showed all their vast experience, quality and composure to seal the gold despite missing one of their top performers Sam Oldham who had a very awkward vault landing and was taken by medical staff form the arena at the very start of the day’s events, returning to pick up his gold medal later on. Missing Sam meant every routine counted from then on and Louis Smith stepped up to perform well on parallel bars to cover his absence with Max Whitlock and Nile Wilson in superb world class all-around form throughout, alongside Kristian Thomas. Overall the team always had control, their difficulty level and the execution of their skills honed from years of top level competition meant they were unbeatable, a score of 266.804 well above the rest.
