Britain's Nile Wilson Is the 2014 European Junior All-Around Britain’s Nile Wilson is the 2014 European junior all-around gymnastics champion with teammate Brinn Bevan taking the bronze medal. Nile controlled the event in Sofia while Brinn tussled for the podium places with Russia’s Starikov going right to the final routine; Nile scored 84.646 with Brinn scoring 82.932 and Starikov 83.540 Competing across all six men’s apparatus the all-around champion truly defines the most complete gymnast. Nile was outstanding throughout, great difficulty levels and range of skills across all pieces with top scoring high bar, vault, pommel and floor performances the standout routines as he follows his 2012 European all-around silver to become the champion. Brinn was also exceptional, as he produced the top rings and second best high bar and pommel routines of the day. The medals continue a fine week that has already seen the junior team crowned champions for the fourth successive championships with more medal opportunities in apparatus finals on Sunday. Nile said after: “It’s the best feeling in the world, coming in to this I had a lot of pressure which may be showed in the first few routines but I put my head together gritted my teeth and went for it. I was saying to myself have a big heart, focus and let’s nail these routines. It’s just brilliant I couldn’t be happier or more proud to stand with the gold medal and hear our national anthem.” Brinn said “I’m well happy, there were a few mistakes and I could have been better but I still have the bronze medal which is fantastic. I knew it would be a close call but didn’t feel any pressure. We did amazingly as a team on Wednesday and that was the main aim so today I could go out there and do it for myself.” Nile Wilson Nile began his campaign on vault where he was confident and powered to a score of 14.166. On to parallel bars and Nile produced a routine high in difficulty, he unfortunately couldn’t quite stabilise himself re-catching the bars mid routine and had to re-grasp but continued well to score 13.666. An awesome high bar routine for Nile saw him come back in to the reckoning in style and score 14.266.He followed up on floor with another superb display producing a perfectly landed double twisting double back tumble pass he punched the air as he finished to score 14.666. On pommel Nile was fluid and composed with high difficulty in his skills for a great score of 13.766. Finally on rings Nile knew a clean routine would be enough for the top spot and that’s exactly what he did, controlled and calm his coach let out a shout of relief as he landed safely for 14.016 points. Brinn Bevan Brinn began his event on rings with a superb routine and a perfect stuck dismount giving him 14.233. On to vault he was again in fine form, only a small hop on landing to score 14.400. Brinn had to fight hard to save one of his handstands on parallel bars but battled through well for a 13.500. On high bar Brinn was again in great form with a superb double- double dismount for a 13.833. On to floor, Brinn produced some excellent energetic twisting tumbles; he couldn’t quite control the landing of his final triple twist and took a pace forward for a great score of 13.266. Ending on pommel needing 14.308 Brinn handled the pressure superbly, a lovely dismount but not quite enough to seal silver as he scored 13.700. The championships continue on Saturday24th May with the senior men’s team final where Daniel Keatings, Daniel Purvis, Sam Oldham, Max Whitlock and Kristian Thomas aim to defend their European title. .

  • Max Whitlock Has Been Crowned European Pommel Horse Champion
    Max Whitlock has been crowned European pommel horse champion with Sam Oldham taking high bar silver, Kristian Thomas high bar bronze and Daniel Purvis taking floor bronze to cap a superb championship for the British men’s team in Sofia. Olympic pommel bronze medallist Max’s routines have been a class above his competitors all week and this was the same in the final as he took gold with a huge 16.166 points, beating the Olympic champion by some distance. His pommel gold continues a British legacy in this event with Dan Keatings taking the previous two European titles. Sam and Kristian showed all their experience on high bar in a tense competition the British boys showed great composure, skill and determination to take the silver and bronze. Dan’s floor was similarly impressive as he produced a confident stylish fault-free routine to claim the European bronze for the second time having also took the same medal in 2010. Elsewhere Max also placed 5th on floor. The results conclude the men’s European Championships with the seniors also taking team silver and the junior boys team gold, all-around gold and bronze and four gold and four silver medals in event finals. Max summed up his pommel performance saying: “I’m really, really happy. I’ve worked so hard on my routines and am always trying to up my game to stay ahead of the competition. To produce under that level of pressure and expectancy and win ahead of a legend like Kristian Berki feels fantastic. My routine is high on difficulty but I’m never satisfied, from here I’m going to be looking to push on even further, it feels fantastic to have won this medal and I’m determined to go on and win more in the future.” Sam Oldham said after: “I’m almost speechless.

The success of the junior and senior national teams throughout the 2009-2012 Olympic cycle culminated with Great Britain Men’s Team winning the Team bronze medal at the London Olympic Games. This historic result was added to with silver and bronze medals at pommel horse. Furthermore, we enjoyed incredible success at the European Championships with both seniors and juniors being crowned Champions of Europe 2012. These results have been replicated across all levels of junior competition, with our young gymnasts winning multiple trophies and championships. Our task is to ensure that this success is sustained through the continuous development of our junior gymnasts through to senior competitors. The Performance Pathway for Men’s Artistic Gymnastics has undergone a complete and thorough overhaul. A great deal of consultation was undertaken and the Men’s Technical Committee is confident that once in place and working, the new structure will satisfy the majority of needs for Clubs and Regions with National aspirations. It is anticipated that throughout the 2013-16 Rio Olympic Cycle a variety of initiatives will be undertaken by Regions. With this streamlined Performance Pathway it is hoped that Regions will take the initiative to create Regional Squad structures (with British Gymnastics support) catering for the performance development of their Clubs and gymnasts.

    Britain’s gymnasts have once again made history as the men’s team of Max Whitlock, Louis Smith MBE, Kristian Thomas, Nile Wilson, Brinn Bevan and Daniel Purvis have taken silver at the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow, our greatest ever artistic gymnastics World Championships team result. The GB men, who have never taken a world team medal, finished with 270.345, just 0.473 behind the newly crowned champions Japan (270.818) and 0.386 ahead of former world champions China (269.959). The silver medal was sealed with the last performances of the championships as the Hydro Arena awaited the placing’s, finally the scoreboard revealing the result and again confirming Great Britain’s standing amongst the best teams in world gymnastics The British men’s competition got off to great start with Louis Smith performing a difficult pommel routine under the pressure of opening the campaign scoring 15.333. Brinn Bevan’s huge shout of “come on” to the crowd showed how happy he was with his pommel with Max Whitlock last up produced an outstanding routine for our top score of 15.700. GB then moved to rings where Max Whitlock was again in good form scoring 14.400, the roar of the crowd indicated Scotsman Dan Purvis was next up and he was solid for 14.333, Nile Wilson the last up with an impressive 14.933. Brinn Bevan on vault showed no nerves in his first World Championships his double pike Tsukahara scoring 15.133. Max triple twisted to 15.033 and Kristian Thomas followed with a double piked Yurchenko vault with 15.333.

    Great Britain’s junior male gymnasts have once again proved their dominance of European gymnastics by claiming their fourth straight European team title. Brinn Bevan, Nile Wilson, Giarnni-Regini Moran and Joe Fraser put in outstanding performances to score 254.094 for gold ahead of Russia in silver scoring 252.395. The success continues a trend starting back in 2008 when the likes of Olympians Sam Oldham, Dan Purvis and Dan Keatings helped GBR to their first junior title which was again matched in 2010 and 2012. Each of the British boys contributed great routines, small mistakes on pommel horse, the only errors in a fantastic competition. Competing alongside the Russians the British boys always led and despite the late falls they easily took the gold. It was Nile Wilson, the 2012 European junior all-around silver medal winner, who led the way performing superbly on all six apparatus to score 85.565 points for the team, the highest all-around score of the event qualifying him confidently through to Friday’s final. Brinn Bevan will join Nile in the all-around final after also completing a fault free competition for GBR scoring 83.856 for third. Nile described the boys' pride afterwards saying: “This is my second European junior team title and its very special. To continue the gold medal tradition in this event had its pressure but we all stood up to the challenge and we are very proud to have kept on that run for our country.
