The birthplace of British guitar music. The embodiment of Northern soul and grit. The onramp for the Irish diaspora who’ve left their mark on British culture since emigrating in their droves in the 19th century. From the distant past to the recent past, Liverpool is a colourful and charismatic city that is as prized for its contemporary delights as it is for the history that seeps from the pores of its red brick warehouses and converted factories. The city is as famous for its people – for their indomitable spirit and character – as it is for the ebb and flow of the tides that wash against the docks at Bootle. Few English cities can boast a solidarity and sense of community like Liverpool, voted the fourth-friendliest city in the world. It’s the city of culture. The city of music. The city of art and food and sport. Many of the first-time visitors who flock to Liverpool do so to pay homage to its most famous export – The Beatles. The Magical Mystery Tour, which takes in the childhood homes and hangouts of the ‘60s sensations, makes for an enthralling two-hour experience that’s rich in nostalgia. Yet for all that, Liverpool is no more stuck in the 1960s than it is in the 1860s, when ships from around the globe would converge to offload salt, cotton, ceramics and timber. The city may be proud of its past but it’s one that has its sights firmly set on the future. Forward-thinking and ambitious, Liverpool is a bustling 21st century hub whose nightlife is as alluring as its business and leisure facilities. If you’re nursing the sort of thirst that water alone can’t slake, head to St Peter’s Square, where the pubs and clubs wind all the way to Concert Square, the hub that anchors the city’s vibrant nightlife. From accommodation to entertainment, Liverpool is bursting at the seams. First-time visitors may wish to check out the city’s most famous attractions, which are no less enthralling for all their popularity. From touring Liverpool FC’s famous Anfield Stadium to discovering millions of years of earth’s history crammed into the World Museum, there’s a lot going on. Hop aboard a German U-boat at Birkenhead or blast off into the furthest reaches of the galaxy, so to speak, at Spaceport. As you explore Liverpool – its listed quayside buildings, maritime museums, football stadiums and restaurants – keep The Entertainment Guide close at hand on your tablet or smartphone. 6 For offers and promotions: @entguide_liv Liverpool 2020/21 From exceptional activity centres to eclectic shops, we’ve curated the very best local attractions, leaving you with the simple task of planning your itinerary around them. How would you spend your perfect day in the city that’s brimming with choice – checking out the boutiques and bohemian bakeries in The Baltic Triangle? Shunning the sunlight and delving into the labyrinth of underground caves known as The Williamson Tunnels? Gawping at the wild beasts in Knowsley Safari Park? Your trip should be every bit as unique as you are. We’re here to point you in the right direction, but the rest – the fun part – is entirely up to you. Whether you’re visiting the city of Liverpool for business, pleasure or a little bit of both, keep this resource close at hand. The Entertainment Guide contains everything you need to turn a pleasant stay into an unforgettable one. Since the brand launch in 2000, visitors to our national website have requested recognition for the best venues throughout Great Britain and Ireland. Obviously this is very difficult with a wide range of top establishments which feature within the guides. What I decided to do was acknowledge these requests by the general public by awarding a Certificate of Excellence, which over the years now adorn the walls and receptions of many businesses. So keep posting the comments and remember if you appear in your city edition, you have been recommended or reviewed by us, so keep up the high standards. www.theentertainmentguide.co.uk Remember...this is the original Entertainment Guide... accept no other!! Located in the north of the city, Aintree Racecourse and Visitor Centre has benefited in recent years from a £35 million redevelopment project. Comprising two new Grandstands, a brand-new Parade Ring, Winners Enclosure and the superb Aintree Pavilion, the site offers a top-notch racing experience for all spectators. In addition to hosting April’s Grand National, Aintree hosts four more race days throughout the year. While sporting enjoyment is a given, entertainment is also supplied for the whole family, from falconry displays and ferret racing to shire horse displays and face painting. During Christmas race day, kids even get the chance to meet reindeer and visit Santa’s Grotto. Those who aver that Aintree is all about horse racing are sadly misinformed; it’s a successful conference and events venue, too. A range of spacious suites can be tailored for exhibitions, meetings, award ceremonies, banquets and product launches; the racecourse provides a perfect setting for events of all shapes and sizes. A world-class racecourse with five-star facilities to match, Aintree is one of Liverpool’s greatest assets. 10 For offers and promotions: @entguide_liv ARTS, CULTURE & TOURISM Liverpool ONE, Liverpool, L1 8JF 0151 792 8803 [email protected] www.junglerumble.co.uk www.theentertainmentguide.co.uk 11 Liverpool 2020/21 Lime Street Liverpool, L1 1JE booking number 0844 871 7660 general enquiries 0871 231 7787 LIVERPOOL EMPIRE THEATRE Liverpool Empire Theatre stands imperiously were still called The Quarrymen, before returning on Lime Street, a famous venue on one of the in 1962 under their new name.
