Liverpool Development Update
LIVERPOOL DEVELOPMENT UPDATE November 2016 Welcome Welcome to the latest edition of Liverpool Development Update. When I became Mayor of the city in 2012, I said that Liverpool’s best days were ahead of it. If you consider the levels of investment being seen across the city today in 2016, my prediction is now ringing true. Since the start of 2012, we have seen over £3.8 billion worth of investment which has brought new businesses, new homes, new schools, and new and improved community and health facilities to Liverpool. We have seen the creation of nearly 15,000 job spaces, many of which will be filled with new jobs to the city. We have also created thousands more construction jobs. There is more good news. Several major new schemes are now in delivery mode. I am pleased to see rapid progress on Derwent’s Liverpool Shopping Park at Edge Lane, whilst Project Jennifer is now well underway with construction about to commence on its new Sainsburys and B&M stores. In addition, Neptune Developments have started work on the Lime Street Gateway project, and I can also report that work is underway on the first phase of the Welsh Streets scheme that will now see many of the traditional terraces converted to larger family homes. Meanwhile, some of the new schemes have started under the Strategic Housing Delivery Partnership which will build a further 1,500 new homes and refurbish another 1,000 existing ones. Plans for new schemes continue to be announced. The Knowledge Quarter is to be expanded with a new £1billion campus specialising in FRONT COVER: research establishments, whilst we are now also seeking to expand the Commercial Office District with new Grade A office space at Pall Mall which this city so vitally needs. -

Downloaded on 28 Sep 2021 06:24:34 SGT DEJAN GRBA Forensics of a Molten Crystal: Challenges of Archiving and Representing Contemporary Generative Art Introduction This text addresses the questions of erasure, deletion and disappearance in new media art from the aspect of preserving, archiving and representing the emblematic line of generative art practices whose poetic qualities make them museologically problematic within the technological and institutional context of the early 21st century. Contemporary generative art often combines procedural (algorithmic) thinking with bricolage methodology and relies on the infrastructures such as the Internet or the AI systems which are becoming ubiquitous and essential but remain largely elusive, exclusive, opaque and misunderstood. We explore this interrelatedness by discussing some of the exemplar generative art projects which transcend the expressive and aesthetic limits of code-based art but prove to be difficult to preserve and are relatively underrepresented within the art world. With respect to the existing literature in the area, we show that the material fragility, the cognitive values and the educational potentials of generative art practices all stem from their conceptual, methodological and technical sophistication, pointing to the uncertain cultural status of generative art and to some general yet ambivalent issues of memory, re(cognition) and preservation. -

One of the latest generation of Cuban artists, Novo has already had occasion to show his work in important international events and venues such as the Havana Biennial, the Venice Biennale, MARTE Museo de Arte de El Salvador and the Liverpool Biennial. El peso de la muerte is a project specially conceived for Galleria Continua and brings together a series of new works in which investigation and procedure are key elements. Deeply poetic but also alive with questions, Novo’s work is situated in the context of the daily battles to get to the bottom of individual and collective identity. In his artistic practice he moves forward turning his back on the future, penetrating into the most hidden folds of history to offer us a fresh dialogue and a different point of observation. His works are often the result of joint efforts involving historians, cartographers, alchemists, botanists, musicians, designers, translators and military strategists, all engaged in the eternal struggle to gain freedom – individual and collective – , in the attempt to set into motion ideological mechanisms blocked by the rust and sediment that have accumulated over years of immobility and lethargy. -
