Es gobernada por el Liverpool City Council, uno de los cinco consejos de Merseyside. Es el segundo puerto en exportación del Reino Unido. La ciudad se situaba originalmente en condado de Lancashire. Para Visitar Liverpool, es mundialmente famosa por ser el lugar donde surgieron los Beatles, uno de los grupos que revolucionaron la música moderna. En Liverpool se combina la grandeza y la decadencia, con viejos y decrépitos edificios junto a catedrales y construcciones de arquitectura moderna. Entre sus principales atractivos destacan: Albert Dock. Es un lugar impresionante, con almacenes restaurados y enormes columnas de hierro fundido que rodean una gran extensión de agua. Allí se encuentran la Tate Gallery Liverpool. Es una extensión de la Tate Gallery de Londres. Se trata de una galería con exposiciones de gran calidad. Abre diariamente de 10:00 a 18:00 h. Museo Marítimo Merseyside. Dividido en tres secciones. Se puede disfrutar con las exposiciones Emigrantes al Nuevo Mundo, la Batalla del Atlántico de la II Guerra Mundial, los Modelos del Mundo y los Grandes Constructores de Barcos. El horario de apertura es todos los días de 10:30 a 15:30 h. Museum of Liverpool Life. También con tres temas importantes: Mersey Culture, Haciendo y Viviendo; las Tradiciones de la Ciudad y Demanding a Voice, que trata del unionismo y la democracia. Abre diariamente de 10:30 a 15:30 h. The Beatles Story. Aquí se puede hacer un seguimiento de la historia del grupo británico y también contemplar objetos, discos, videos, etc. que hacen las delicias de los fans. El horario todos los días de 10:00 a 18:00 h. Town Hall, diseñado por John Wood, se terminó en 1754. Adornado con columnas corintias y coronada con una soberbia cúpula, sobre la que descansa la estatua de Gran Bretaña. Tanto el pórtico como la cúpula fueron añadidos posteriormente. Nº 16 de Cook Street, edificio de moderna arquitectura, construido en 1866, cubierto de placas de vidrio. Cavern Club, donde los Beatles tocaron hasta 275 veces entre marzo de 1961 y agosto de 1963. El edificio original fue demolido para construir una estación de tren que finalmente no se hizo, pero en 1984 el Cavern Walks se volvió a abrir con una buena reproducción de la Caverna en los sótanos. Britannia Adelphi Hotel, construido en 1912, fue considerado uno de los hoteles más lujosos del mundo. Hospedaba a los pasajeros que pernoctaban en Liverpool antes o después de cruzar el Atlántico. Pier Head, columna de 1760. Port of Liverpool Building, finalizado en 1907. El Palacio de la Bolsa, en cuyo centro se alza majestuosa la estatuas del Almirante Nelson. Vines, pub con un curioso interior un tanto lujurioso. American Bar, el local escogido por los americanos que lucharon durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Crown Hotel, edificio en estilo art-nouveau construido en 1.905. St. George Hall, de exterior griego e interior romano, fue construido en 1854 como sala de conciertos. Está considerado como un de los más logrados edificios neoclásicos del mundo. Liverpool Museum, museo abierto en 1860, con colecciones muy interesantes, tanto permanentes como itinerantes, y William Brown Library. El horario es de lunes a sábado de 10:00 a 17:00 h y los domingos de 12:00 a 17:00 h Cunard Building. Edificio con el estilo de un palacio veneciano. También son de interés el Everyman Theatre, es uno de los teatros de repertorio más famosos de Inglaterra. Dispone además de un restaurante con la mejor comida de la ciudad. Philharmonic Hall, de 1900, sede de la Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Ye Cracke, fue uno de los lugares favoritos de los estudiantes del cercano College of Art, entre ellos John Lennon y Cynthia Powell. Metropolitan Cathedral, situada en lo alto de una colina, se trata de una moderna catedral católico - romana. Sir Edwin Lutyens diseño esta catedral que iba a ser más grande que la de San Pedro, pero la guerra y el declive económico de la ciudad dieron al traste con sus propósitos. A pesar de todo, tanto el interior como el exterior son impresionantes. El interior alberga una cripta luterana, la cual por culpa de la Guerra, se finalizó en 1967. El horario de visitas es de 8:00 a 18:00 h. Anglican Cathedral, enorme catedral anglicana, la más grande de Inglaterra, de estilo neogótico. Construida a base de piedra de arena roja, fue acabada en 1978. Tiene una torre de 331 pies desde donde se aprecia la mejor vista de la ciudad. El horario para visitarla es todos los días de 9:00 a 18:00 h. La Torre está abierta diariamente de 11:00 a 16:00 h Walker Art Gallery, alberga interesantes colecciones de pintura, sobretodo impresionistas y post-impresionistas, como Degas, Cezanne o Matisse. Horario: lunes a sábado de 10:00 a 17:00 h; domingo de 12:00 a 17:00 h. Bold Street. Esta calle estaba repleta de manufactureros de cuerdas para los barcos del puerto. En el siglo XIX se transformó en una calle de moda repleta de tiendas, restaurantes y clubes nocturnos. Western Approaches, búnker construido bajo toneladas de hormigón, fueron los cuarteles del comando central secreto de la Batalla del Atlántico en la II Guerra Mundial. Cuando finalizó la guerra el búnker se abandonó pero su interior permanece intacto. Se puede visitar todos los días excepto los viernes y domingos qued permanece cerrado. Hay dos panorámicas clásicas de Liverpool. Desde lo alto de la catedral anglicana en Hope Street, donde se divisa toda la ciudad y el río Mersey, y desde el Mersey Ferry que sale del embarcadero de Pier Head, cerca del Albert Dock. Desde Liverpool se puede viajar a la Isle of Man, que cuenta con un precioso paisaje, siendo su capital Duglas una verdadera reliquia. Formalidades Para los ciudadanos miembros de la Unión Europea tan sólo es necesario presentar el Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI) o el pasaporte vigente. No existen limitaciones para la entrada de divisas, ni para la salida de libras esterlinas El IVA (Impuesto sobre el valor añadido) grava la mayoría de los artículos y servicios. Es de un 17,5 % sobre el valor total. No existen tasas de salida en aeropuertos. Restauración y Diversión Aunque Inglaterra no es precisamente famosa por la calidad de su gastronomía, el reciente renacimiento de la cocina creativa que Londres ha experimentado se está extendiendo a las provincias.
