Biography Biografie Biography ince 2005, SVARTSOT has conveyed their distinctive blend of metal and folk music with more than just a hint of the medieval s age. Besides snarling guitars, rumbling bass and thundering drums, the music is flavoured with the tones of authentic folk instruments such as whistles, mandolins and bagpipes, supporting the ruthless medieval feel and the lead guitar’s captivating melodies. Inspiration for SVARTSOT’s lyrics is found in the wealth of Danish folklore and history, and the merciless, growled vocals are therefore delivered entirely in Danish. After the self-release of the demos “Svundne Tider” (2005) and “Tvende Ravne” (2006), SVARTSOT inked a deal with the Austrian label Napalm Records in 2007. Hereafter followed the release of the albums “Ravnenes Saga” (2007), “Mulmets Viser” (2010) and “maledictus eris” (2011). During the winter of 2013/2014, SVARTSOT recorded their fourth studio album, which will be released in the summer of 2014. SVARTSOT is an established name on stages in both Denmark and abroad. The band can thus look back on an extensive back catalogue of tours, shows and festivals. These include tours and shows with bands such as Týr, Alestorm and Negură Bunget as well as festival appearances at Wacken Open Air, Paganfest extended shows (with Finntroll and Eluveitie), Metalfest Austria, and the Russian Oktobierfest (with Korpiklaani) amongst many others. During the past few years, SVARTSOT has experienced an increase in demand as a headliner both at home and abroad. The band has headlined a number of concerts in Denmark, Sweden, Germany and the UK, amongst other places. Considering Genre in Metal Music © Benjamin Hillier, 2020. The definitive, peer reviewed, and edited version of this article is published in Metal Music Studies, Volume 6, Number 1, pp. 5-26, 2020, doi: https://doi.org/10.1386/mms_00002_1 Keywords: extreme metal, genre, heavy metal, metal musicology, metal studies, music analysis Introduction In the late 1980s and early 1990s metal music experienced a widespread fracturing of musical styles resulting in the proliferation of a vast number of subgenres under the broad umbrella of 'metal'. This was especially prevalent amongst the collection of subgenres commonly referred to as 'extreme metal'. The differences between these subgenres are of deep importance to many fans and musicians for whom genre is an integral element of their musical identity and authenticity as ‘metalheads’ (Smialek, 2015). Despite this acknowledged importance, there is still a need to establish what Kahn-Harris calls ‘a widely accepted vocabulary for identifying the constituent musical features of metal’ (2011: 252). Metal studies broadly remains ‘undertheorized and undermethdologized’ (Weinstein, 2016: 29) with a need to clarify its academic rigour (Savigny and Schaap, 2018). It is these needs that this article seeks to address by analyzing the relevant literature discussing genre in metal and responding to the shortcomings identified. This article proposes both a taxonomy for classifying metal subgenres and a model that provides a series of interconnected characteristics to assist in defining these subgenres. By clearly outlining ways in which we might organize the different ‘levels’ of subgenres, this article aims to provide a common vocabulary for metal studies scholars to use when analyzing genres and their relationships.

It is a complex amplification of heavy metal that has garnered increased attention during the last two decades due to some bands becoming more popular and accessible than anticipated for the styles it comprises. Although women have a small but steady presence in heavy metal, this number shrinks when applied to extreme metal - a subculture which has typically been coded as a masculine domain (Purcell 2003; Kahn-Harris 2007; Walser 1993; Weinstein 1991). For women, participating in such an overwhelmingly male-coded environment can incur sexism, marginalization, and misogyny.

Master of Fine Arts Thesis Joyride Nicholas Weddell Submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirement for the degree of Master of Fine Arts, School of Art and Design Division of Ceramic Art New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University Alfred, New York 2019 Nick Weddell, MFA Thesis Advisors: John Gill, Jason Green, Johnathan Hopp, Matt Kelleher, Linda Sikora, Linda Sormin Prologue Avalanches of aerated alchemy appear alien and adrenocorticotrophic. Big blobs blast over bumps, boops, and beeps. Creamy chromium covers cavity and crack, cancel caution for a chance to capture celebration. Dripping drops droop decadently, as eccentric enzymes erupt with emotion and eutectics express existence for epochs. Flirt with familiarity through fused flint furniture. Goopy gobs and gibby gops, gargantuan glaze grandeur makes Nick giddy. Hides of high heat honey handsomely hugs handle and hip. Iron interwoven inside ingredients inches impulsively. Jazzy junk and joyful jelly jovially bejewels jungle-like jurisdictions on a jumping joyride down jar and joint. Kaleidoscope kitchens and kindergarden kingdoms. Lumpy landscapes of luscious lime and luxurious lavender. Metaphorical mountainous mixtures move immodestly, matte maelstroms make masks of mauve muck mayhem. Nickel nabs nature in nebulous necklaces like neon nectar. Obscene ounces of oxide ooze over objects opposite of ordinary. Philosopher of phenomenon, passion picks the path of potassium to pool ponds on practical pots. Quote your quirk in a quantity of quartz quagmires. Righteous raspberry reactions race over rubble and rock, roaring rivers red with romance run rebelliously round. Stoneware slumps and stormy staccatos of swarming suspensions swath slabs and surge subjects. Tango with transparent turquoise typhoons that travel and tour over table and teapot.

The rise of interest in heavy metal academically reflects the growth of the genre as a normal or con- tested part of everyday lives around the globe. The aim of this series is to provide a home and focus for the growing number of monographs and edited collections that analyse heavy metal and other heavy music; to publish work that fits within the emergent subject field of metal music studies; that is, work that is critical and inter-disciplinary across the social sciences and humanities; to publish work that is of interest to and enhances wider disciplines and subject fields across social sciences and the humanities; and to support the development of early career researchers through providing opportunities to convert their doctoral theses into research monographs.
