Seven feeding groups were proposed based on stereo microscopic examination of mandibular morphology and analysis of gut contents. Among the examined subfamilies, family Tettigonidae proved to be the most diverse in term of mandible types, with four feeding groups. This was followed by family Acrididae, which also possessed a variety of mandibular structures with three feeding groups. Other families contained only single feeding groups. It was noted that only five species were graminivorous, all were from the family Acrididae, with mandibles characterized by very short incisors and relatively wide molar regions. The gut contents of these five species contained more than 80% monocotyledonous plant species. Collected samples were classified into 2 Families i.e. Acrididae and Pyrgomorphidae, 6 Subfamilies and 13 species i.e. Hilethera aeolopoides (Uvarov, 1922), Aiolopus thalassinus thalassinus (Fabricius, 1781), Heteracris littoralis (Rambur, 1838), Acrida exaltata (Walker, 1859), Atractomorpha acutipenis blanchardi Bolívar, 1905, Pyrgomorpha (Pyrgomorpha) bispinosa deserti Bey-Bienko & Mishchenko, 1951, Acrotylus humbertianus Saussure, 1884, A. longipes subfasciatus Bei- Bienko, 1948, A. longipes longipes (Charpentier, 1845), Ochrilidia geniculata (Bolivar, 1913), Truxalis eximia eximia Eichwald, 1830, Locusta migratoria (Linnaeus, 1758) and Oxya hyla hyla Serville, 1831. Further, taxonomic keys, photographs, illustrations and affected host plants were highlighted to know the actual pest status of existing species. In addition to this, Biodiversity Index, Simpsons Index of Biodiversity and Species richness also calculated for each species. Prevalence Rates of Microsporidia in Locusts and Grasshoppers in South-Western Russia

Locusts and grasshoppers are dangerous polyphagous pests of agricultural crops. In the present paper, results of screening of Acridoidea populations in the South-Western Russia for microsporidia infections including locusts Locusta migratoria, Dociostaurus maroccanus, and Calliptamus italicus and grasshoppers Chorthippus loratus, Oedipoda caerulescens, and Acrida bicolor, are presented. Microsporidia prevalence rates were estimated using light microscopy of fresh smears. Out of 179 specimens of L. migratoria sampled between 2002 and 2019 in Krasnodar Territory, Astrakhan and Rostov Regions, none was infected with microsporidia. Similarly, 95 specimens of D. marrocanus from Krasnodar Territory (2017) and Dagestan Republic (2009) were also negative for microsporidia. Meanwhile, one positive case was detected for C. italicus corresponding to 0.5 % for the total amount of 192 exemplars collected from 2002 to 2019 in Krasnodar Territory, Astrakhan and Rostov Regions. As for grasshoppers, all Ch. loratus samplings in Krasnodar Territory in 2017-2019 were infected at the prevalence rates of 2.2-15 %, though no infection was found in 40 specimens in Crimea in 2019. In 56 individuals of O. caerulescens collected from Rostov Region and Krasnodar Territory, the microsporidia prevalence rate was 1.8 %. Among 96 specimens of A. bicolor, none was infected. -

Humayoon Akhtar Department of Zoology, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh 202002,Uttar Pradesh, India _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT The consecutive survey of two states of India i.e. Bihar and Jharkhand are based on paddy and pulses cultivars of the areas during 2009 and 2011. Bihar’s economy is agrarian while in Jharkhand, agriculture is the mainstay of tribal population. During the survey it was observed that the paddy and pulses grown in the area were highly infested with grasshoppers. Samples collected were sorted out to yield 34 grasshopper species belonging to 25 genera, 2 families, 10 subfamilies and 19 tribes. Maximum number of grasshoppers collected belongs to subfamily Oedipodinae (9 species) followed by Oxyinae (4 species), Acridinae (4 species), Gomphocerinae (3 species), Catantopinae (3 species), Cyrtacanthacridinae (3 species), Pyrgomorphinae (3 species), Tropidopolinae (2 species), Hemiacridinae (2 species) with least number in case of Spathosterninae (1 species). _____________________________________________________________________________________________ INTRODUCTION Pulses are important source of protein for majority of the world populations. The high protein value of legumes makes them of great importance to the world already experiencing massive protein calorie malnutrition, with even greater food deficits on the horizon. India imparts 25 per cent of total global pulses production. Both adults and nymphs feed on flower buds and early pods of green plant posing the greatest threat resulting yield loss to pulse production. -

Munis Entomology & Zoology, 7 (1): 391-417] ABSTRACT: The state of Jharkhand (India) is a biodiversity hotspot owing to its topography and geographical features and is blessed with tropical zone dry and wet forests. The mainstay of tribal communities is agriculture. Acridoids have long been credited as forest and crop pest and till date there is no consolidated work dealing with the distribution of locusts and grasshoppers from the state. Keeping this in view the area was surveyed and acridoid fauna has been listed in addition to worked out taxonomy. Keys to subfamilies and genera have been provided. The interaction of concerned samples with their natural habitat was observed very closely and has been listed wherever required. Collection of 421 samples has been worked out that comprised 41 species belonging to 28 genera of 10 subfamilies, 3 families and 4 tribes. KEY WORDS: Observation, Taxonomy, Acridoidea, Jharkhand (India). Orthoptera is one of the most diverse orders of class Insecta with superfamily Acridoidea being most noted pest of agriculture and forest areas. It is because of this reason that attempt has been made to work out the taxonomy of the same alongwith some ecological or field observations that help us to understand the interaction and behavior of this fauna. -
