III. REQUIRED MATERIALS

Grudem, Wayne. Systematic Theology . Grand Rapids: Zondervan Publishing House, 1994. ISBN: 0310286700

The One-Year Bible . Kivar edition. Tyndale House Publishers, 1986. ISBN: 0842324518.

IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

A. Grudem readings & log: Read all relevant sections of Grudem on our five areas of doctrine. Keep a log of the hours invested in reading over the material. Develop ten (10) solid questions on each theological area (total of 50 questions) in your Grudem readings to turn in (with your log of hours) on MAY 10 .

B. One-Year Bible assignment: Use your One-Year Bible on a daily basis (begin at FEBRUARY 20 and go through MAY 10.) to collect information from the Scriptures regarding the five areas of doctrine which we are to study. Such bits of theological data, such as January 7's reading from Psalm 7:1-17 that “God expresses his wrath every day,” remind us that we did not make these doctrines up. The data of Scripture is rich and plentiful; this exercise will encourage you to read the Word of God theologically, searching out the details of the great doctrines we embrace as Christians. You are to record your findings on the form provided on the course website. Turn in on MAY 7.

C. Cross Cultural Study: You are to investigate the issue as to how is done in a cross-cultural situation. You have three options in doing this assignment: Option #1: Read one book-length treatment of how Christian theology is done in an African, Latin, Chinese or other context and write a one- page summary of what you learned. Option #2: Read at least five journal articles on the topic and provide a one-page summary of your findings. Option #3: Conduct an interview with someone from a cross-cultural context, asking how they do Christian theology. What are the particular emphases in that culture’s understanding, approach to, and interaction with theology? Provide a one-page summary. Due MAY 9.

D. Creative Project: By MAY 12 complete your 30-hour creative project which will be turned in to your instructor. Make sure you include a log of how you invested your 30 hours. All ideas for creative projects must be approved by your professor.

Revised 10/13 THE 6310 Online: Syllabus - Page 2

E. Personal Creeds: At the beginning of the discussion of the next five areas of doctrine, you are to turn in a position paper on the previous area of doctrine (no more than two pages, typed and single-spaced). You are to affirm your beliefs in the essential doctrines in that area using appropriate Scriptures, specify several distinctive issues over which Christians should show charity to one another, and one or two practical implications of the essentials you affirm. No footnoting is required. Check the Assignment Schedule for due dates.

F. Exam: A Final take-home exam will be given ( Due by MAY 10 ). A copy of the Final Exam will be posted online at an appropriate time and you will be notified by e-mail so that you will be able to download it.
