THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF THE PLURALISTIC HYPOTHESIS AS A BASIS FOR INTER-RELIGIOUS DIALOQUE Introduction Having giving a detailed elaboration of the position of Hick, it is now a moment to see if it can be a guiding principle for the Christians in their relations with the non-Christians and especially, to the great world reli gions especially Judaism, Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism.1 It is possible in this chapter to refer to some of the already mentioned Hickian ideas espe cially in the moment of clarification or elaboration of the difficult related to the thought. No doubt, the position of Hick has provoked different reactions and even polemical ones academically due to fact that his position has some how been very radical in comparison to other pluraliste something that is in Hick’s awareness. “I realize that, however that what I’m going to say can only appear as an undermining of faith, as a heresy or apostasy, to many at the more con- 1 Cf. THEOSOPHY AND THE ORIGINS OF THE INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS By Mark Bevir Department of Political Science University of California, Berkeley Berkeley CA 94720 USA [E-mail: [email protected]] ABSTRACT A study of the role of theosophy in the formation of the Indian National Congress enhances our understanding of the relationship between neo-Hinduism and political nationalism. Theosophy, and neo-Hinduism more generally, provided western-educated Hindus with a discourse within which to develop their political aspirations in a way that met western notions of legitimacy. It gave them confidence in themselves, experience of organisation, and clear intellectual commitments, and it brought them together with liberal Britons within an all-India framework. Marquette University, 2018 Origen has traditionally been famous for his universalism, but many scholars now express doubt that Origen believed in a universal and permanent apocatastasis. This is because many scholars are convinced that Origen’s teaching on moral autonomy (or freedom of choice) is logically incompatible with the notion that God foreordains every soul’s future destiny. Those few scholars who do argue that Origen believed in both moral autonomy and universal salvation either do not know how to reconcile these two views in Origen’s theology, or their proposed “solutions” are not convincing. In this dissertation I make two preliminary arguments which allow the question of logical compatibility to come into focus. -

Gainesville: University Press of Florida, 2001. 226 pp. The post-Cold War era stands at a crossroads. Some sort of new world order or disorder is under construction. Our choice to move more toward multilateralism or unilateralism is informed well by inter-religious debate and international law. Both disciplines rightly challenge the “post- Enlightenment divide between religion and politics,” and reinvigorate a spiritual-legal dialogue once thought to be “irrelevant or substandard” (Falk: 1-8, 101). These disciplines can dissemble illusory walls between spiritual/sacred and material/modernist concerns, between realpolitik interests and ethical judgment (Kung 1998: 66). They place praxis and war-peace issues firmly in the context of a suffering humanity and world. Both warn as to how fundamentalism may subjugate peace and security to a demagogic, uncompromising quest. These disciplines also nurture a community of speech that continues to find its voice even as others resort to war. The four books considered in this essay respond to the rush and risk of unnecessary conflict wrought by fundamentalists. -

The Tyranny of Authority: Eternal Damnation in the Fragments of Clement of Alexandria? In the year 1715, John Potter published the most comprehensive edition of the extant writings of the Clement of Alexandria, the second-century Church Father who is most famous for his apologetic Protrepticus and intensely philosophical Stromata. Potter’s edition includes a collection of fragments, and among these fragments, this one is conspicuous: Ἀθάνατοι πᾶσαι αἱ ψυχαὶ, καὶ τῶν ἀσεβῶν, αἷς ἄμεινον ἦν μὴ ἀφθάρτους εἶναι. Κολαζόμεναι γὰρ ὑπὸ τοῦ ἀσβέτου πυρὸς ἀπεράντῳ τιμωρίᾳ καὶ μὴ θνήσκουσαι, ἐπὶ κακῷ τῷ ἑαυτῶν τέλος λαβεῖν οὐκ ἔχουσιν.1 All souls are immortal, even those of the wicked, for whom it is better that they were not deathless. -

TMSJ 18/1 (Spring 2007) 3-21 THE NATURE OF TRUTH: POSTMODERN OR PROPOSITIONAL? Robert L. Thomas Professor of New Testament Ernest R. Sandeen laid a foundation for a contemporary concept of truth that was unique among evangelicals with a high view of Scripture. He proposed that the concept of inerrancy based on a literal method of interpretation was late in coming during the Christian era, having its beginning among the Princeton theologians of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He ruled out their doctrines related to inspiration because they were based on rational thinking which he taught was absent from earlier Christian thought. Subsequent evaluations of Sandeen’s work have disproved his assumption that those doctrines were absent from Christianity prior to the Princeton era. Yet well-known Christian writers have since built on Sandeen’s foundation that excludes rationality and precision from an interpretation of Scripture. The Sandeenists criticize the Princetonians for overreacting in their response to modernism, for their use of literal principles of interpretation, for defining propositional truth derived from the Bible, and for excluding the Holy Spirit’s help in interpretation. All such criticisms have proven to be without foundation. The Princetonians were not without fault, but their utilization of common sense in biblical interpretation was their strong virtue. Unfortunately, even the Journal of the inerrantist Evangelical Theological Society has promoted some of the same errors as Sandeen. The divine element in inspiration is a guarantee of the rationality and precision of Scripture, because God, the ultimate author of Scripture, is quite rational and precise, as proven by Scripture itself. -
Reincarnation Profile
Reincarnation By Eric Pement Introduction Reincarnation is the popular belief that after death the human soul or inner self leaves its former body and is eventually reborn into a new body. An earlier term is transmigration of the soul, indicating that the soul can migrate from one body to another. The ancient Greeks called it metempsychosis (“after ensoulment”) and palingenesis (“repeated birth”).1 Reincarnationist ideas have appeared in many lands, including island cultures having no contact with religions from the mainland. Though Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras (570–495 BC) left no writings, his students claimed he remembered four previous lives and promoted metempsychosis. The works of Plato (428–348 BC) have been well preserved; he taught reincarnation, as did his Greek successors. The theory of reincarnation flourished in four religions from India: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. It is not in the oldest Hindu scriptures (the Vedas), but it appears in the Upanishads (about 700 BC) and later works.2 All four religions differ significantly in how they explain reincarnation. In Europe and America, the details were modified perhaps to sound more acceptable to Western ears, but the core theme remained: the soul is immortal and death is not final—only a recurring transition in an endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth into a new form. Many reincarnationists believe that when one reaches sufficient spiritual illumination, the cycle of rebirth will cease and the soul will reunite with God, Brahman, or whatever they deem Ultimate Reality. Fundamental Questions Beliefs about reincarnation vary widely. Perhaps the best way to focus the topic is to ask a few questions. -

Theological Studies 52 (1991) CURRENT ESCHATOLOGY: UNIVERSAL SALVATION AND THE PROBLEM OF HELL JOHN R. SACHS, S.J. Weston School of Theology, Cambridge, Mass. HE PURPOSE of this article is to take a fresh look at the ancient and Tmuch misunderstood theme of apocatastasis. Increasing contempo rary use of the apocalyptic language of hell, hand in hand with the alarming appeal and growth of fundamentalism, sectarianism, and inte- gralism, suggest the urgency of this endeavor. After first surveying the checkered history of this theme from biblical times to the present, I will, second, state and describe the central points of current Catholic theology on these issues. It manifests a remarkable degree of consensus. Third, I shall turn more closely to the highly original thought of Hans Urs von Balthasar, whose approach seems most challenging. Fourth, I shall raise a question concerning the ability of human freedom to reject God defin itively. Finally, my conclusion will stress how a properly understood Christian universalism is not only consonant with several central strands of Christian belief, but is also profoundly relevant to the religious and cultural developments of the present age. THE DOCTRINE OF APOCATASTASIS The doctrine of apocatastasis, commonly attributed to Origen, main tained that the entire creation, including sinners, the damned, and the devil, would finally be restored to a condition of eternal happiness and salvation. This was an important theme in early Christian eschatology.1 Even before the Christian era, of course, the idea of an apokatastasis paritàri was well known in ancient religion and philosophy. Julian Strube Tantra as Experimental Science in the Works of John Woodroffe Abstract: John Woodroffe (1865–1936) can be counted among the most influential authors on Indian religious traditions in the twentieth century. He is credited with almost single-handedly founding the academic study of Tantra, for which he served as a main reference well into the 1970s. Up to that point, it is practically impossible to divide his influence between esoteric and academic audiences – in fact, borders between them were almost non-existent. Woodroffe collaborated and exchangedthoughtswithscholarssuchasSylvainLévi,PaulMasson-Oursel,Moriz Winternitz, or Walter Evans-Wentz. His works exerted a significant influence on, among many others, Heinrich Zimmer, Jakob Wilhelm Hauer, Mircea Eliade, Carl Gustav Jung, Agehananda Bharati or Lilian Silburn, as they did on a wide range of esotericists such as Julius Evola. In this light, it is remarkable that Woodroffe did not only distance himself from missionary and orientalist approaches to Tantra, buthealsoidentifiedTantrawithCatholicism and occultism, introducing a univer- salist, traditionalist perspective. This was not simply a “Western” perspective, since Woodroffe echoed Bengali intellectuals who praised Tantra as the most appropriate and authen- tic religious tradition of India. In doing so, they stressed the rational, empiri- cal, scientific nature of Tantra that was allegedly based on practical spiritual experience. As Woodroffe would later do, they identified the practice of Tantra with New Thought, spiritualism, and occultism – sciences that were only re-discovering the ancient truths that had always formed an integral part of “Tantrik occultism.” This chapter situates this claim within the context of global debates about modernity and religion, demonstrating how scholarly approaches to religion did not only parallel, but were inherently intertwined with, occultist discourses. -

Book Reviews 339 Michael J. McClymond, The Devil’s Redemption: A New History and Interpretation of Christian Universalism 2 vols. (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2018). xxiv + 1325 pp. $90.00 hardcover. This work broaches the centuries-old debate over universal salvation, bring- ing together careful historical reconstruction of arguments, on both sides, with rigorous theological analysis. Historical theologian Michael McClymond fur- nishes timely perspective into universalism in its many forms, past and present. While a distinct majority throughout Christian history have sought to draw up lines against universalism, there is an increasing number, even among evangel- icals, who gravitate to the possibility that a loving God will finally save every person he has created. In chapter 1 McClymond addresses historic Protestant, Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, evangelical, and Pentecostal-charismatic perspectives. Chapter 2 traces the Western esoteric roots of universalism, originating within ancient Gnosticism and reemerging in the Jewish Kabbalah and Christian Cabala of the Late Medieval and Early Modern periods. The next two chap- ters survey the undeniable influence of the ancient Alexandrian theologian Origen. Chapters 5 and 6 consider the modern resurgence of universalism in the thought of German Lutheran Jakob Böhme and American Protestantism, respectively. Chapter 7 surveys the rise of universalism in the German idealism of Immanuel Kant, Julius Müller, Friedrich Schleiermacher, Georg W.F. Hegel, FriedrichW.J. Schelling, and PaulTillich. Chapter 8 considers the impact of Rus- sian Sophianism in the thought of Vladimir Solovyov, Nicolas Berdyaev, Georges Florovsky, and Sergei Bulgakov. Chapter 9 examines the significance of Karl Barth’s doctrine of universal election and Jürgen Moltmann’s notion of divine passibility. -
