ANSETT AUSTRALIA

COMPLETE' ELEET LIST

by John Wilson

Ansett Australia today is the end product of a very large number of predecessors who contributed towards creating one of Australia's major airlines. This article presents a very brief history of the airlines associated with the creation of Ansett Australia and also details the fleet list, containing references to all aircraft (as can be identified by the author) which have been associated in some capacity with Ansett and its predecessors. The list does not propose to be complete. This is the first time a list has been published and it can be assumed that there will be aircraft not accounted for. The author would welcome additional information from readers. The aircraft have been listed by airline so as to give a clearer picture of the companies involved. Due to the size of the fleet list and space limitations, information such as previous identities, aircraft incidents, subsequent operators etc has not been included.

Some Contemporary Notes Herbert Joseph Larkin The material reproduced below was taken from two issues of “The Motor In Australia” [Vol. 14, No. 3 of 01 Sep 19 - pp.300-304 & No. 4 of 01 Oct 19 - pp.434-436], which was a Sydney-based monthly magazine primarily concerned with items relating to motor-vehicles in Australia, with a coverage fairly restricted to N.S.W. The “sole Proprietors, Printers & Publishers” were Atkins, McQuitty Ltd., of 16 Pitt St., Sydney, with one C. A. Jeffries as editor. The Melbourne Public Library has several bound volumes of this publication, commencing with Volume 13, which covers January to June of 1919. Individual issues averaged over 120 pages and these were cu mulatively numbered within each volume. A considerable portion of each issue was given to advertising of various kinds - as a consequence, most pages of text were on even-numbered pages, thus doubling the page numbers for any given article. Price per issue for all 1913 issues was 6d, remarkable value even then. For the period, a considerable amount of aeronautically-based information was published in this magazine. In the issue for May of 1919, it was announced that, in the near future, aviation-related matters would be discussed under the title of “Aircraft’ and later expanded into a separate publication as such; the first such separate section appeared in the June issue. This was the beginnings of “Aircraft’ as may be still purchased today. John Hopton

FORCED LANDING BY THE LATE AIR COMMODORE P.G.HEFFERNAN, O.B.E., A.F.C. The thought uppermost in the mind of every aircraft pilot is: "Will the engine keep going?" Complementary to this is: "What shall I do if it stops?" Nowadays the problem of engine failure has been When the aircraft was loaded, the compass had to be reduced to negligible proportions because jet engines are swung and a test flight carried out. The oil temperature had not risen and the motor and turning the plane over, I could look forward to being was churning away, so I was not worried. The Bristol suspended upside down for not less than an hour and a motor in the Bulldog was very reliable and, provided the half. Assuming, of course, that the plane did not catch oil temperature did not rise, considerable latitude was fire.. But this possibility was minimised because the allowed with the pressure, in fact it could go as low as 30 engine was not going. The edges were slightly banked with the result that naturally did not help me greatly. By now we were about in the landing run the plane naturally followed round the half-way to Cook -the only thing to do was to press on edge of the pan and rolled to a stop. Mentally I said a and hope that I would not run out of oil pressure before I prayer of thanks and got out. The first thing that struck got there. It continued to drop steadily, but still no me was the absolute silence - a silence that somebody temperature rise, and I was beginning to convince myself once described as being able to hear. My thoughts must somehow have communicated themselves to the Returning to the aircraft I pulled off some of the motor, because it gave a warning screech and stopped, engine cowlings to check for broken oil lines etc., but not as did my heart, at least temporarily. Now, the Nullarbor finding any, thought I had better check the oil filter. I had Plain is flat for some 600 miles, but is covered with it out in a couple of minutes, and the reason for the seized stunted salt bush and lumps of limestone outcrops, all of engine was as plain as a boil on your neck. The Bulldog so clogged with fine dust that it had been sucked flat by was fairly stable on the ground, but if I blew a tyre there the oil pump. You will recall the dust problem at Bute and was every possibility of nosing over smartly on to my Ceduna - well, this was a legacy from that. It then hit me back. If this should happen, there was a good chance of why the oil temperature had not risen. The thermometer shaving off the top of my head as the aircraft slid along bulb was on the output side of the oil pump and, as no oil the ground upside down. could get through, none flowed over the thermometer bulb - no rise in temperature would consequently be recorded. About one hundred yards from the line on the north So that was that. I replaced the filter and the cowls after side I spotted a small claypan about one hundred yards in having collected some of the sump oil in the empty beer diameter, but it was somewhat oval-shaped. This was bottle, and some distance from the plane pulled up some better than nothing, so I planned my approach on to it. I also had a packet of "Minties", partly Having got this organised we thought it advisable to consumed, and some chewing gum. I could therefore check the oil filter on Johnny's aircraft. The only other was very dirty and no doubt would have caused the same thine to do was to peg down the aircraft and put the trouble as I had experienced. Chapman had the nous to canvas covers over the engine and cockpit. check his at Forrest and found the same dirt content. With all respect to the oil companies, they had considerable By 1630 I was reconciling myself to a night in the difficulty in dispensing absolutely pure fuel and oil where it open. So fire going. The oil and some green saltbush made a lovely when it is remembered that at Bute and Ceduna we had column of smoke and within a couple of minutes a refuelled in clouds of red dust, it was no wonder that Bulldog made a pass over me. It circled round and landed some of it got into the oil. on the strip I had marked out, and I wandered over to it. The pilot was Dixie Chapman. I gave him the score. There were two tanks, each holding seventy gallons, and the drill was to fly for At intervals along the line repair shops had been half-an-hour alternately on each tank. According to my established, mainly for cleaning the boiler tubes of the calculations, I had about two gallons left in my starboard engines which, because of the heavy lime content of the tank, and was on the last half-hour of my port tank. There is not much to tell about the rest of the trip. My story would not be complete without some comment on the salvage of my original plane. The morning we left Cook, Snow Cooper and a gang of enthusiastic fettlers bearded the railway trolleys and set forth. The actual distance was fifty- two miles and the trolleys beat the utility by some fifteen minutes, as the track alongside the line was very rough and weaved its way through the limestone outcrops and the saltbush. The plane was towed to the line, the planks laid out, and It was manhandled on to the trolleys. All went well until a signal mast at Fisher, another small siding, was encountered, when it was found that the wing overhung the line so far that ifwould have fouled the mast. So the plane had to be taken off the trolleys, pushed around the mast and reloaded. This had to be done twice the pressure falling. But, as I have said, there was a lot of more for other masts but, despite these delays, they got latitude allowed in the operating pressures. Also, had the the plane back to Cook that afternoon. It was then moved engine failed if I had / attempted to return, I would have been in a very difficult bit of country. There Is only one habitation, Colonna station, and having looked at the country where I did land I am certain that the aircraft would have been wrecked had I come down anywhere else, and quite possibly I would have wrecked myself in the process. Moreover, salvage would have been almost impossible as there were no vehicular tracks between Colonna and Ceduna. At Cook we were lucky to have had the facilities and the cooperation of the locals. I know only too well that every pilot can execute everyone else's forced landings better than the pilot concerned, so all I can say is that, having made my decision, it came off and "all's well that ends well."
