The Polar Record, Vol 16, No 100,1972, p 107-111 107 Printed in Great Britain OBITUARY ROLAND ERNEST BESCHEL, a pioneer in lichenometry, died on 22 January 1971. He was born in Salzburg on 9 August 1928 and obtained a D Phil in 1950 from the University of Innsbruck with a thesis on urban lichens and their growth. In 1955, he left a professorship at Rosenburg College in Switzerland for a position at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. In 1959, he joined the biology department of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and was at his death Professor of Biology and Director of the Fowler Herbarium. He became a Canadian citizen in 1965. His fieldwork took Hm to west Greenland, to many parts of northern Canada, and to parts of the Soviet Arctic seldom, if ever, visited by westerners. His research interests were directed mainly to botanical approaches to climate and chronology, chiefly by means of dating rock surfaces. Recently he had become deeply interested in the application of computers to geobotanical problems. Lt-Col FREDERICK SPENCER CHAPMAN, DSO and bar. TD, MA. author, explorer, mountaineer, and schoolmaster, was found dead on 8 August 1971 at Wantage Hall, University of Reading. He left a wife and three sons. He was born on 10 May 1907 and spent his boyhood near the Lake District, where he early acquired a deep love of the countryside and of nature. After school at Sedbergh, he went to St John's College, Cambridge, took an honours degree in English and history, and, through friendship with Geoffrey Winthrop Young, was introduced to the world of mountaineering. -

AUTHOR’S POST-PRINT VERSION, SEPTEMBER 2019. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1086/705337 1 | P a g e “A good advertisement for teetotalers”: Polar explorers and debates over the health effects of alcohol, 1875–1904.1 Abstract: This paper examines discussions about drink and temperance on British polar expeditions around the turn of the twentieth century. In doing so, I highlight how expeditionary debates about drinking reflected broader shifts in social and medical attitudes towards alcohol. These changes meant that by the latter part of the nineteenth century, practices of expeditionary drinking could make or break the reputation of a polar explorer, particularly on an expedition that experienced an outbreak of scurvy. At the same time, I demonstrate the importance of travel and exploration in changing medical understandings of alcohol. I examine these issues through an analysis of two expeditions organized along naval lines—the British Arctic Expedition (1875–6) and the British National Antarctic Expedition (1901–4)—and, in doing so, demonstrate that studying 1 I would like to thank Dr James Kneale, Dr Innes M. Catalogue of place names in northern East Greenland In this section all officially approved, and many Greenlandic names are spelt according to the unapproved, names are listed, together with explana- modern Greenland orthography (spelling reform tions where known. Approved names are listed in 1973), with cross-references from the old-style normal type or bold type, whereas unapproved spelling still to be found on many published maps. names are always given in italics. Chivalry at the Poles: British Sledge Flags PROCEEDINGS Barbara Tomlinson Curator, The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, UK In 1999 Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s sledge flag was sold by the family and purchased at Christies on 17 September by the National Maritime Museum. This is what we may call Scott’s official sledge flag recogniz‑ able in the photographs of the ill‑fated polar party at the South Pole and subsequently recovered from their tent by Atkinson’s search party on 12 November 1912. The flag is in heavyweight silk sateen, machine-stitched with a cross of St. George at the hoist, the rest of the flag divided horizontally, white over blue. The Scott family crest of a stag’s head and the motto “Ready Aye Ready” are embroidered in brown in the centre. Piece for the Nimrod
“Antarctic Sites outside the Antarctic - Memorials, Statues, Houses, Graves and the occasional Pub” Presented at the 6th ‘Shackleton Autumn School’ Athy, Co, Kildare, Ireland, Sunday 29 October 2006 onument, Hamilton, Ohio. HE ANTARCTIC is very far from where I grew up and have spent most of T my years. As a town planner I saw little prospect of having a job that would take me there and I couldn’t afford paying money to get there. So I travelled to Antarctica in a vicarious way, collecting ‘sites’ of mainly historic interest with some association to the seventh continent but not actually there. My collection resides in what I call my “Low-Latitude Antarctic Gazetteer” and began close to forty years ago with its first entry, Captain Scott’s house at 56 Oakley Street in London (one of several associated with him but the only one bearing the coveted ‘blue plaque’). The number of entries now totals 887. Fully 144 of these relate to a greater or lesser degree to Sir Ernest Shackleton (Scott comes in second at 122, Amundsen 37). Herewith are some of my Shackleton favorites (and a few others, too): SOME HOUSES Shackleton houses abound. The first and most important is Kilkea House, not far from Athy, Co. Kildare, where Ernest was born on the morning of 15 February 1874. The house still stands in a lovely rural setting. But by 1880 the family had moved to Dublin to 35 Marlborough Road, an attractive brick row house south of the city center and one of three Shackleton houses commemorated with plaques, this particular one being unveiled on May 20, 2000. -

From supplying Portsmouth and the navy with cider in the 17th and early 18th centuries through to being the home of several naval establishments during the Second World War, Havant has always played its part in supporting the navy. Even today Portsmouth dockyard, though not with the volume it once was, is a leading employer to the people of the Havant area. With local hi-tec firms such as Lockheed Martin Havant still plays its part in supporting the navy. Because of its close proximity to Portsmouth it is not surprising that many a naval officer chose Havant and its neighbourhood for their homes. Men of the calibre of Admiral Sir John Acworth Ommaney of Warblington House, Emsworth Road, Admiral Sir James Stirling of Belmont Park, Bedhampton, and Vice-Admiral Charles Norcock of Sherwood, East Street, have all at one time chosen to live in Havant. -

chs04737EntwisleRoydsPeelLloydfamiliesofLlanblethianresearch.doc Entwisle, Royds, Peel & Lloyd families of Llanblethian 1745 Birth of Robert Peel of Peel Fold, Lancashire, who married Mary, daughter of Thomas Haworth of Blackburn, and went on to have many children, including Sir Robert Peel and Lawrence Peel (see 1796) Burkes Landed Gentry 1756 Falinge, Rochdale, sold to John Royds of Deeplish Hill (John’s son James later built Mount Falinge, and his other son Thomas built Greenhill, both in Rochdale). John Royds of Falinge (1729-99) and wife Ann (nee Gilbert) had 10 children of whom 6 died in infancy. Of those who survived, James and Thomas are significant. H Fishwick ‘History of the Parish of Rochdale’ 1758 James Royds (b 30/12/1758, d 2/2/1842 at Rochdale) and wife Mary (nee Smith) had 12 children of whom Mary Anne was the 7th (she married Hugh Entwisle in 1824) and Frances the 8th (she married her cousin John Gilbert Royds in 1843). Fishwick & David Royds 1764 Thomas Royds of Greenhill, merchant (b 21/10/1764, d 27/2/1819 at Cheltenham) and wife Elizabeth (nee Smith, elder sister of Mary Smith above) had 9 children, of whom John Gilbert Royds was the eldest and William Royds the third. Fishwick & David Royds He came to Cheltenham ca 1804, but maintained links with Rochdale Revd S Rudman 1787/8 John Markland assumed the name of Entwisle, the line having died out (his grandfather in 1713 had married Ellen Entwisle). He lived at Foxholes, Rochdale, the house being rebuilt about 1793. H Fishwick He married Ellin, daughter of Sir Hugh Lyle of Coleraine. -
