Hockey NT - 2012 Annual Report Page 10 PRESIDENT’S REPORT FEBRUARY 2013

For the 2012 hockey year there was specific focus on the longer term sustainability of the Association, and setting a foundation for the ability to provide more substantive support for our member groups, including the Darwin Hockey Association, the Alice Springs Hockey Association, and the Masters Hockey Association.

The 2012 year completed a number of initiatives, of various scale. The infrastructure completions included turf 2, safety netting, grandstand seating, scoreboard replacement, irrigation and shade structures.

Sponsorship numbers and income increased in 2012, allowing a substantive hockey development program to be undertaken in Darwin and Alice Springs. We also had strong individual representation at the national/international hockey level, with a number of athletes making various national squads and scholarships.

The introduction and continuation of various forms of hockey in the off season is also an initiative that has been well supported by the hockey community.

We also welcome Nick Lenoir as the NTIS Hockey Head Coach. Nick has been engaged with NTHA in the development capacity already, and is also a member of the High Performance Committee.

In the coming 2013 hockey year we have some financial challenges ahead of us that will require a composed level of resolution. In particular the recently imposed utility charges will add a substantial cost burden to the operation of the hockey centre. We will also be hosting two major tournaments, being the U21 Women in April and the U15 Boys in September/October. This provides a great opportunity to engage in national hockey events, but also comes with a cost that needs to be managed.

The curtailing of the Arafura Games has limited the opportunity to demonstrate our game, but has also removed the organisational effort that would have been involved for a tournament that has had diminishing international participation.

I recognise that there are always areas of improvement for NTHA. To ensure we have a management and community engagement structure that can support our sport, and address the improvements we would like to see, we are proposing the implementation of a refined framework.

The purpose of this framework is to promote positive and effective engagement between the NTHA, our constituents (DHA, ASHA, NTMHA), and the hockey community, including external stakeholders.

Transparency and communication is the key to purposeful engagement, and to facilitate this we will be establishing an ‘email hotline’ directly to the NTHA Executive Management Committee. All communiqués will be addressed.

Hockey NT - 2012 Annual Report Page 11 We are also proposing the establishment of three sub committees, supported by hockey community members. The High Performance Committee already exists, and will continue in the space of development and national competition.

The Standards, Governance and Ethics Committee is to be formed to provide a framework, evaluate, and address aspects of behaviour and expectations of participation.

The Fundraising and Recognition Committee is to provide focus and ideas in the opportunity of raising profile (and money!), and in identifying and rewarding service to hockey.

I would like to make a ‘call’ for all people interested in being a part of these groups, or alternatively, who have additional ideas and would like to be actively involved in developing NT hockey!

Another important initiative NTHA has modelling currently is putting a ceiling on the costs for players/parents to participate in national competition. We recognise that a major barrier to participation is the cost of participation… So we are looking to introduce a cost structure that substantially lowers the costs as compared to 2012.

These are the aspirations of 2013, but for now I would like to thank all those who have assisted, suggested and/or cajoled! It IS important I have your input, and your engagement to maintain hockey as a great sport for Territorians.

Thanks, Steve

EXECUTIVE OFFICERS REPORT

HOCKEY NT Report 2012 Hockey in the Northern Territory in 2012 has moved ahead in many areas and aspects of the sport. With the highlight being Joel Carroll’s selection in the Australian Olympic Men’s team, thus continuing the Northern Territory having a team member as a representative on an Australian Olympic Hockey team since the 1996 Olympic Games. This is a great achievement by Joel as he was the only Olympic representative from the Northern Territory to take part in the London Olympic Games.

Another highlight was the completion of the $1 million facility upgrade to the Marrara Hockey Stadium. This now means that the Marrara Hockey Stadium has two international quality pitches for our Territory players to enjoy our great game.

The selection of Adam Luck and Jeremy Hayward in the u21 Men’s Australian Squad was a just reward for both athletes continued hard work and commitment to their sport. Brooke Peris and Elizabeth Duguid gained selection in the u21 Women’s Australian Squad putting them both in contention for Junior World Cup selection in 2013. These selections were a fantastic achievement by all four athletes.

A highlight for the Junior NT representative teams was the U13 Girls 5th place finish in Perth, winning the Play the Whistle Award and also taking out the Player of Tournament with Erin Lidbetter. The NT U13 Boys also finished in equal 5th place position being pushed to a 6th place finish on goal difference. Both head coaches Doreen Walton for the U13 NT Girls and Sam Spry for the U13 NT Boys did a tremendous job in preparing these two teams and this was evident in the success of both teams.

The AHL Men’s SRA Territory Stingers finished their AHL campaign in a history making 5th place position winning the last two finals games of their tournament. This is the best finish the Stingers have had in the history of the AHL Men’s competition. Joel Carroll, Adrian Lockley, Jeremy and Leon Hayward, Tarrant Haami-Jones, Robbie Duguid and Jonathan Peris were all outstanding contributors in this history making team. The Territory Pearls caused the upset of the women’s AHL Women’s tournament in Perth when they defeated the reigning 2011 AHL champions the Sun’s. Under head coach Jason Butcher the Pearls efforts throughout the tournament were impressive against all teams finishing in a very respectable 7th place. Many of the players are looking forward to the 2013 AHL competition where they are determined to finish higher up the rankings. Brooke Peris, Elizabeth Duguid, Sarah Paul and Jemma Markos were the stand out players for the Territory.

NT SPORTS AWARDS Des Abbott once again was the outstanding highlight for hockey at the 2012 Northern Territory Sports Awards winning the Northern Territory Sports Person of the Year for a second year in succession. This was a great achievement for Des having played in only the latter half of 2011 in the Lanco 9’s Super Series and the successful Champions Trophy winning team.

DEVELOPMENT Development of the sport of Hockey in the Northern Territory continues to flourish with our two development officers based in Darwin and Alice Springs focusing on the grass roots level of our game. Programs inclusive of local schools, communities and community groups are seeing a greater level of

Hockey NT - 2012 Annual Report Page 13 participation in our sport at club level in Alice Springs and Darwin. There has also been a greater focus on the development of our coaches, technical bench staff and umpires with the successful running of courses for each of these areas in Darwin and Alice Springs. Thanks to Michael Craig and John Mowat from Hockey Australia for delivering a level 2 coaching course in Darwin in May. The course was very well attended and the feedback received was very positive and a true reflection of the quality of these two evergreen presenters.

DEVELOPMENT REPORT 2012

2012 was another busy year in the development department providing quite a few highlights and achievements. The following is a summary of development events for 2012.

Recruitment 2012 has seen another year of growth in junior participation of hockey in the Northern Territory. Schools throughout the Darwin and Palmerston area were targeted during the year with interest in the game very high. This year schools were offered free clinics in exchange for Hook in2 Hockey registrations of all participants.

We had a strong presence in the Active After School Care program this year and hockey was delivered to 15 different schools in Darwin, Palmerston and Alice Springs.

The interest coming from schools was further highlighted by the Inter School Cluster competition which saw 21 school teams compete in a seven a side competition at the Marrara Hockey Centre. The day was a huge success and we are hoping that 2013 will see more juniors registering with clubs.

Alice Springs Recruitment It was a very successful year in Alice Springs with our Alice based Development Officer Mark Walsh working closely with the after school program to get an 8 team competition up and running. The competition was held once a week for 10 weeks and will recommence during term one in 2013. This is a great result for Alice Springs as they have struggled for junior numbers in recent years.

The below table shows some key figures for the year:

Item Expected Numbers for 2012 Actual Numbers for 2012

Hookin2Hockey Participants

5-12 Year olds first registered 250 388

5-12 year olds first registered 60 182 with a club HockeyEd Coaches 25 27

HockeyEd Officials 30 16

Hockey NT - 2012 Annual Report Page 15 Olympic Hook in2 Hockey Camp, July 2012 The mid-year school holidays were the perfect time for this 3 day hockey camp for 5 to 13 year olds. The camp had 74 participants register which is the highest we have had for the holiday camp format. Each participant was supplied with an Olympic kit which included an Australian replica playing singlet, medallion and highlights DVD.

The camp’s focus was to promote the Olympics and to make all our junior players aware of the very rich history of Northern Territory players playing for the Australian teams. The camp concluded with the running of a Mini Olympics tournament which saw 8 different countries represented in some fun events.

Olympic Hook in2 Hockey Campers.

Junior Development Squads

Junior Academy Squad It was another successful year for the JAS in 2012 with most members gaining entry into NT state teams. The program has now completed its second year and is improving all the time. There was a great response from our volunteer coaches towards the program and I would like to express my appreciation to all who gave up their free time to help develop our talented juniors.

Academy Coaches: Adam Spry, Sam Spry, Doreen Walton, Brett Rollings, Daniel Hayes.

As well as the skill and fitness focus, the program added extra sessions that dealt with organizational skills, mental toughness and self learning. The sessions were delivered by the NTIS Sports Psychology coordinator, Liz Grylls.

Junior Development Squad This is the underpinning program to the Academy Squad and it targets our junior players that want to make state teams but are just missing out. Two blocks of 6 weeks were run throughout the year and the response was very positive from all involved. We hope to see a majority of the members move up into Academy and state team squads.

Hockey Education

There was an emphasis put on coaching and umpiring accreditation throughout 2012 in both Darwin and Alice Springs which resulted in level 1 and 2 coaching courses being conducted. The level 2 coaching course held in May was professionally delivered by Hockey Australia Hockey ED manager John Mowart and former NT coach Mike Craig. 16 of our volunteer coaches gave up their weekend to sit through the 2 day course and from the feedback we received it was time very well spent.

Mike Craig explains the concepts of 2 v 2

Summary 2012 was a very productive and satisfying year and I look forward to improving all the development programs in 2013. Once again I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who have helped out during the year. And a big thanks to all parents who support their kids and their love of our great game.

Once again the NTIS Hockey program had a successful year with the continuation of athletes being selected or identified for National Senior and Junior programs.

In 2012 the NTIS was able to provide the AIS Hockey program with:  3 players (D.Abbott, J.Carroll, B.Peris)  4 players were also selected in National Junior Squads (A.Luck, J Hayward; B Peris, E Duguid)  one athlete identified in the National Futures program (J.Hullick)

Other highlights include:  Joel Carroll won a Bronze Medal at the London Olympics  Joel Carroll won Gold at Champions Trophy with National Senior Team  Joel Carroll won a Gold Medal at the International Super Series and was named Player of the Tournament  Joel Carroll was purchased by the Mumbai Magicians for the inaugural Hockey India League  Jeremy Hayward won Bronze at U21 Sultan of Johor Cup with National Junior Team  Brooke Peris and Elizabeth Duguid won a Silver Medal with the Jillaroos in the International Super Series  Adam Luck and Brooke Peris were selected in the Australian Teams to compete at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival  Leon Hayward won a Silver Medal competing in the New Zealand National League

In the Darwin Daily Training Environment the NTIS program maintained a focus on continued skill acquisition and refinement in a number of key areas that included ball handling, tackling and distribution and receiving. The athletes were also exposed to a number of tactical themes with a priority focus on Attacking and Defensive circle principles and game sense.

The NTIS continued to be innovative by taking on a GPS project in conjunction with the NTIS sports science staff. Some of the aims of this project included the ability to track and compare intensity of various competitions, record and compare intensity of training across various load cycles and the use GPS and HR data as a feedback tool to improve performance in daily training environment. The NTIS continued with its holistic educational approach with a number of seminars being held, these included; time management, error recovery, an introduction to ACE and sports psych as well as a leadership workshop.

Solid 2012 campaigns have seen Des Abbott, Joel Carroll retain their respective spots in the National Senior squads and AIS scholarships for 2013. Brooke Peris has also gained an AIS Scholarship for 2013 and Leon and Jeremy Hayward have been selected in the National Development squad and junior squad respectively. Elizabeth Duguid also remains in the National Junior squad for 2013.

2012 also saw the departure of Melissa Hall from the program. The NTIS would like to thank Melissa for her efforts during her 5 year period as NTIS Hockey Head Coach.

Darwin Hockey Association

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2012

It was a busy year and I when I put my hand up to become President I expected to be able to devote quite a bit of time to the role. Unfortunately I took on a new job that meant I was regularly travelling outside the Territory and working long hours. It does not look like abating next year so I will not be nominating for the position. As the year progressed it became evident that it was the same old faces volunteering and contributing to the administration of hockey in the Territory. Looking around the room today, it is evident that there is a need to bring in fresh and younger blood to introduce new ways of thinking and administration that will ensure the survival of hockey in the long term. It was good to have Nathanial on the committee this year who questioned the ways of the past and brought a new perspective to the committee. The Darwin Hockey Association has made a loss over the past 2 years and has been eating into its reserves. The cost of hockey is increasing for both DHA and the NTHA so we are going to have to get smarter about the way we do business. In a population of around 130,000 people in Darwin it makes no sense to have separate administration support arrangements for secretariat and treasury. Aligning them more closely together will provide an economy of scale that would reduce the expense to both associations. While I have not been associated with hockey as long as many others in this room, I have been as a player and umpire involved with a number of sports for many years. Over the past 2 years I have observed a growing and open hostility and disrespect for umpires. It is disappointing that this behaviour is exhibited by senior players and then emulated by their children. Let me tell you when I have caught my own son being mouthy toward umpires I give him a right talking to after the game and told him to pull his head in. I have also been in the position as the President of one club where I called to task people who behaved in an unacceptable manner toward umpires both on the field and in the grandstand. It is unfortunate that calling people to task is not happening consistently by club presidents and inappropriate behaviour is accepted because that’s the way that person has always behaved. That would be OK if there weren’t young impressionable minds around thinking if they can behave in that manner it must be OK. Go and watch an under 16 game and you will see similar behaviour being exhibited there toward umpires. Bad behaviour is having an impact on the number of people who are willing to put their hands up and become umpires. Of course umpires get it wrong from time to time. They are, after all only human, but to raise your voice or hand to an umpire is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. I hope each club president regularly reminds their club members of the code of conduct and encourages more players into umpiring roles. While I will not be re-nominating for the role of president I will be returning to play next year and I am willing to help identify major sponsors for the sport. We have to reduce or stabilise the cost of the game to keep attracting Territorians into the sport. Both DHA and NTHA should work together and not in competition with one another to attract sponsors. There are a number of major NT companies that have never been approached for sponsorship and are wanting to improve their Territory and national profile.

Hockey NT - 2012 Annual Report Page 20 We have a tremendous opportunity to gain sponsorship due to the high levels of Territory representation in national teams, increasing televising of hockey and new technologies available to promote the sport (which is why we need savvy people on or advising the committee with a multi- media background). I will finish by thanking the DHA committee members for their dedication over the past year and to Doreen who stayed on as president elect to provide support. I wish the new committee all the best and will be available to assist in any way I can.

Alice Springs Hockey Association

PRESIDENTS REPORT 2012

Executive Summary

The track record of sporting organisation failure in Australia is a serious matter, and Alice Springs Hockey Association must honestly face the fact that without capable administrative competence and sound financial management and liquidity, Hockey in Alice Springs will cease to exist. Hockey in Alice Springs is not unique, with the management left in the hands of a few who love the game and who have a desire to give back to the sport that has provided them with so much physical and emotional support in their earlier years, whilst the majority enjoy the benefits provided, contributing little more than their presence on the field at game time.

If the game of Hockey is to continue in Alice Springs, there needs to be a significant increase in support for those who manage the game, but more importantly Alice Springs Hockey needs more people to accept the responsibilities of managing ASHA affairs.

Sport is a competitive field where Hockey contests for the minds and bodies of community members. Hockey needs people with a high level of personal energy and drive, the preparedness to put social and family requirements aside and the personal belief in their ability to achieve goals they set. Of critical concern is our financial position. Even with Masters Games every 2 years, we still can’t generate sufficient income to replace the turf or the irrigation system. We would be forced to play on grass again, or the association forced to shut down.

Of a more personal nature is the demanding nature of the volunteer roles within a sporting organisation and the pressures of family and paid work; hours involved in sports work, out of pocket expenses, fear of being sued, of being harassed and general lack of appreciation or recognition from the membership. On top of this is the bureaucratic approach required for the management of clubs; managing risk and the constant pressure to gain external funding. My challenge to members of Alice Springs Hockey is this; instead of sitting back, step forward and put yourself into a position where you are personally responsible for the success or failure of Hockey in Alice Springs. Give help rather than advice.

My challenge to Government agencies at the local level is to recognise all sports clubs within a community and allocate sufficient financial resources to support local sports clubs through regular maintenance and annual upgrading of facilities, and to increase their recognition of local sports clubs by providing adequate resources for volunteers, e.g. separate and secure rooms and storage spaces at all venues, meeting spaces, but above all adequate change and toilet facilities appropriate to the sport and their patrons and participants.

The 2012 Goals.

Another year has passed for Alice Springs Hockey with some positives and some negatives. We approached 2012 with a desire to strengthen our administrative and management capabilities, maintain our senior competition and continue the long journey of rebuilding our Junior Competition. It was thought that with a greater contribution from members, we could revitalise Alice Springs Hockey.

Hockey NT - 2012 Annual Report Page 22 We had several goals for the 2012 season: 1. Give more game management responsibility to players 2. Continue to support the building of our Senior competition 3. Build on the work already done to grow Junior Hockey 4. Develop a plan to improve umpiring and technical capabilities within ASHA 5. Commence the process of developing a new Strategic Plan for Hockey Alice Springs

1. Game Management

Giving more responsibility to players for the way in which the game is managed, has been an ongoing strategy of the Alice Springs Hockey Association executive. The executive also adopted a strategy of applying a less formal approach to management and administration in an endeavour to attract more people to participate. This was an abject failure. We were left with almost the same few people to manage and run Hockey.

During the 2012 season, the executive endeavoured to place issues that involved player and team behaviours in the hands of the players with the intent to remove discord and to have the standards of play, competition, and behaviour set by those who are directly affected by these decisions. For the most part, players and teams abided by the standards set, but again appeared reluctant to organise or attend meetings.

I would suggest ASHA return to a more formal approach for 2013.

2. Supporting the building of our Senior Competition

Hockey needs a pathway and a future if it is to attract and develop junior players in what is a very competitive market for young people’s hearts and minds.

To maintain interest at the senior level it is critical competition is as close and balanced as it can be managed to ensure that players do not lose heart and drop out of the sport. It must also provide enjoyment for all, not just the few.

Early indications were that Centrals would not reform for 2012. This was not an option for the executive and Teena Norman was asked to take on the task of rebuilding; not an easy task as they were severely depleted and few willing to play for a side that could not win. Teena must be commended for her achievement. Whilst not reaching finals, both men and women became increasingly competitive as the season progressed and all indications are that they will start 2013 in a much better position than they did 2012.

The downside of this was that Teena was unable to apply as much time and energy to those other tasks that needed her attention. The upside however, was a better balanced and stronger competition.

If the association can’t show a serious improvement in numbers year on year, then our ability to obtain sponsorship or grant money to fix and re-develop the current facilities will be pointless. Money goes to sports where there is the highest participation. eg. AFL. The Government, Local or Territory, is reluctant to give sporting associations the funds to re-develop grounds and facilities if member numbers are low. They are more inclined to spend the money on sports that have much higher participation numbers, believing they get a better return for taxpayers dollars.

Hockey NT - 2012 Annual Report Page 23 3. Build on the work already done to grow Junior Hockey.

With the advent of a Part -Time Development Officer being appointed, work was commenced in 2011 to ensure we had a good connect with the various organisations and bodies within Alice Springs such as Schools and NTIS so that when the Development Officer came on board, this person could hit the ground running. Thanks to Teena for the many hours and meetings put in.

Unfortunately the Development Officer appointed did not have a “Working with Children Card”. This delayed taking up planned activities until well into the Hockey season, caused other activities to be abandoned, and placed demands upon others when the season was winding down.

As disappointing as this was, a solid effort was put in to support the ongoing development of those in the system during the Hockey season and the advancement of players identified as possible representative players.

The role of Development Officer is important for the continuation and growth of Hockey in Alice Springs. For it to be successful in the long term it will require good communications between NTHA, the ASHA executive and the Development Officer.

In an effort to provide support for the Development Officer and to upgrade his skills Alice Springs Hockey Association paid for enrolment in TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Sadly this opportunity was not taken up by the Development Officer.

The development of a junior hockey competition whilst somewhat disjointed, is heading in the right direction. However, there needs to be a re-alignment and connect between junior and senior hockey within the overall strategy for Hockey in Alice Springs if we are to have a coordinated and successful sporting association where the junior base provides the foundation for the senior competition.

4. Improving umpiring and technical capabilities within ASHA.

In 2012 we started on the right track with the appointment of an Umpires Co-ordinator, only to lose this person through a transfer out of town before the season got underway. As no one else would or could step forward, this role then fell back onto Eric Bailey and Mark Goode, placing extra demands on them with little thanks or appreciation.

There can be no game without umpires and it is about time players appreciated what it takes to officiate on a game and accepted some of this responsibility. There are far too few willing to take on this role, but all too many willing to advise how it should be done. It is time to put up.

5. The process of developing a new Strategic Plan for Hockey Alice Springs.

It was hoped that in 2012 the executive could develop a business strategy that will take the progress of Alice Springs Hockey into a successful future.

Unfortunately workplace pressures stood in the way of this activity and we are in more or less the same position we were in at the beginning of the year and little indication that current executive members will have the time to address what is a critical requirement. In this day and age we have to consider Hockey as a Business and must therefore develop or buy in the information, skills, knowledge and techniques to operate as a profitable organisation. There are many facets to the successful operation of a Sports Business, and if we are to be successful in the future this will require us to harness from our members and others what is necessary to organise and operate successfully.

Hockey NT - 2012 Annual Report Page 24 Contributing to the planning process will include consideration of:  Association Values  Personal Commitments  Governance & Management Capabilities  Business/Operational strategies  Cash Flow planning  Financial management  Meeting legal obligations  Sponsorship  Marketing  Communications  Volunteer recruitment and management  Future planning

Your next executive will need to have or acquire the skills, knowledge and time necessary for this task. They cannot however, do this on their own; your executive will need the input and support of every member, if they are to be successful.

Looking Back

In retrospect, 2012 was a relatively successful year for Alice Springs Hockey:  The highlight was the Masters Games. We did this very well.  Our senior competition stabilised. Whilst this is a good thing, we cannot rest on our laurels and more must be done to attract and retain more senior players.  Giving more management responsibility to players didn’t work as well as expected. Things are still not as good as they could be, but we experienced a better spirited competition than in previous years.  By the end of the Hockey Season Junior numbers had grown substantially.

Looking forward

Our hopes for 2013 include the following:  A new executive with emphasis on sustaining player numbers and improving player development.  Improving the coverage of our game through the various media outlets in Alice Springs.  Completing a Strategic Plan that manages and directs Hockey positively towards 2020.

Your challenges: 1. Plan to be successful 2. Build skills and knowledge 3. Contribute to the game you play 4. Develop and Grow in the game 5. Share with others and show what you can do 6. Demand a place within Hockey NT 7. Support those who do

Conclusion

In conclusion, particular thanks and recognition must go to:  Teena, Goode and Nick for their contribution without complaint to the general management of Alice Springs Hockey, and especially their contribution to Masters Games.  Di for ensuring the executive were kept informed and enthused.  Baden and Drummer for their understanding, encouragement and support.

Hockey NT - 2012 Annual Report Page 25  Mark for his contribution to Junior Development.  Nicole for being our public figure and mouthpiece.  Those members and parents who gave of their time and energy to repair what needed fixing, to clean the grounds and facilities and to work in the canteen, and  My wife who accepted without complaint that during the Hockey season there were things about the house that would not get done, functions and social engagements that would not be attended and the myriad of phone calls and emails that would invade our household at all times of the night and day.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2012

Well 2012 has come & gone it was a very good year for NTMHA with some very positive results and feedback; we kicked off the club season with a great 7 aside carnival weekend with men’s and women’s teams from all clubs participating a really good weekend of hockey and socialising had by all, we want to make this an annual event in the Hockey calendar.

The Australian Masters saw two women’s teams travel to Melbourne and two men’s teams went to Hobart with the over 50’s men going through the tournament undefeated winning an exciting final against NSW to come home with the gold medals, congratulations and well done, I heard that a fairly long celebration followed the grand final. The over 55 men’s finished the tournament with 1 win and a draw finishing in 5th which is a pretty good result as they only had 11 players for the entire competition.

Both our women’s teams had solid results with the over 45’s winning 3 games, scoring 12 goals for the tournament and finishing 5th their best ever result for the championships, they were also awarded the Play the Whistle Award for the tournament. The over 50’s had some very close competitive games and came away with a draw and finished 6th.

Jeanette Carroll received a ten year service award for her service and support to Australian Masters Hockey.

2012 Australian Women’s Masters Hockey Championships in Melbourne - The Anne Stewart Perpetual Trophy – Restricted States was awarded to the Northern Territory.

National Selections 2012 - Australian Women Masters Teams (Trans Tasman Hockey Tour 2013):  Julie Hoare (O50s)  Jane Slater (O55s)

International Tours 2012 - Masters World Cup Team: Kensington England:  Keisha Clarke, Coach Australian Women Masters Over 50s Team - Bronze Medalist

More importantly all our teams had a lot of fun in the true Masters tradition, capping off a great year for NT Masters teams.

We now have an NTMHA logo and hopefully in 2013 we will have some NTMHA merchandise for our members to purchase - polo shirts & stubby coolers to start and the Masters Voice newsletter.

Of course no association is anything without its members and in 2012 our membership increased to 120, we ask all our members to encourage others to join and in particular those that have drifted away from our sport, Masters is about participating and enjoying hockey with a strong social element to it. The majority of our members have been a part of Hockey for a number of years as players, club members and administrators at all levels NTMHA’s aim is to work with ASHA, DHA, NTHA and especially the CLUBS to keep masters aged people participating in Hockey for years to come.

Hockey NT - 2012 Annual Report Page 27 In 2013, NTMHA are aiming at holding two Hockey carnivals during the year as well as a social get together of some sorts, if you have any suggestion please let your committee know. In 2014 the NT will host the Australian Women’s Masters Championships in Darwin this is a big event and will require a lot of planning, so I ask you all to get involved in some way to make it a great event for NT Hockey.

A long term goal of NTMHA is to establish a Masters dry season competition, keeping it attached to the clubs and linked through DHA, to start with it may only run for 6 to 8 weeks with games played during the week but we need your feedback and participation to get this off the ground

In closing I would like to thank the NTMHA committee who have done a fantastic job over the last 12 months to get NT Masters off to a great start, and we wouldn’t have got anywhere without a sponsor so a big thanks to Dabsco for their sponsorship of the 7 aside carnival and ongoing support of Hockey.

Hope to see you all out at the Hockey in 2013, participate, get involved and have fun.

Cheers Tony Wood President NTMHA
