PRESIDENTS REPORT

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year already since I took on this role. So much has happened this year that the time has shot by. My learning curve has been steep but, being the chairperson of such a great board has certainly helped “ease” me into the job. Your “behind the scenes” NT hockey team – i.e. the board and the office, have achieved some great things this year.

We started the year in a less than desirable position financially and in my first month as President, found myself sitting in a meeting with the Sports Minister asking for financial help, so dire was our position. Thankfully, it only took the restructuring of one of our substantial NT Government grants to enable us to commence the year solvent and I am happy to report that we will not require such a meeting to start 2011.

Whilst we are now in a better position than at the start of 2010, we have much more work to do. With proper governance and excellence in our financial practices however, NT hockey will return to being a financially sound institution. It is my intention that this happens sooner rather than later. The fully audited financial report that accompanies this document, gives us a great base on which to build future success.

We have attracted some fantastic sponsors this year and to all of them, large and small, I would like to say a sincere thank you. Your support has enabled us to begin to provide the NT hockey community with the services that our sport and our patrons require. In today’s financial climate, sponsor support is crucial to the success of any amateur sporting group. Thank you again. To those of you reading this report, please support our sponsors; use their products, stay in their accommodation, eat their food, drink their beverages. They really do deserve your support for the great support they provide us.

On the field, NT hockey has enjoyed many successes this year. Going straight to the top, how fantastic was the news that Des Abbott has been named in the world team for 2011 after superb performances for Australia in the Champions Trophy, Commonwealth Games and the pinnacle: The World Cup. This is unprecedented for an NT hockey player and an unbelievable achievement.

Joel Carroll’s inclusion in the Australian team for the Champions Trophy and Commonwealth Games, puts him right alongside Des as one of the greats of NT hockey. Heather Langham’s inclusion in the senior Australian team over the past two years culminated in her winning the NT Junior Sportsperson of the year at the 2010 NT Sports Awards. I am confident we will see a lot more of Heather in the Green and Gold in years to come. I’m sure all who have gone before them are very proud to be able to say that they know these great Territory hockey ambassadors.

We enjoyed mixed success in national championships this year but there were some remarkable performances amongst the teams that show that the Territory isn’t just there to make up numbers. I believe that a winning belief is the biggest thing that is required for NT hockey to challenge for greater

Hockey NT - 2010 Annual Report Page 11 honours. One only has to attend junior hockey to see that we have the talent. Our opportunity now lies with developing coaches, umpires and other officials to ensure that we have all the right ingredients to succeed further.

Off the field, we have had a very busy year too. Hosting the Prime Minister for some of her campaign launches at the MHC certainly helped to showcase our facility and resulted in the announcement that the NT and Federal Governments would finance the resurfacing of both our turfs. Turf 1 will be completed prior to this coming season with turf 2 on the agenda for the end of it. I am also hoping that we will attract further Government assistance to help us upgrade the Alice Springs Hockey centre with the addition of change rooms. Something I’m sure you will agree is long overdue.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the NTHA office and MHC staff for all their efforts this year. They have faced many challenges throughout the year especially with the employment of a new Executive Officer (Baden Sharp), alteration of the role of the facility manager (now Operations Manager – Dan Hayes) and employment of a full time Development Officer (Mark Davis aka “Drummer”). All of them have had to hit the ground running and have done a great job in improving the business. The MHC staff also does a great job to help facilitate the DHA season and generally keep the centre running whilst hockey is being played or practised. The board recognises and thanks you all for your efforts.

2011 shows no sign of letting up either. This year we host the finals week for the women’s AHL, a round of the men’s AHL, Arafura Games (all in Darwin) and the inaugural running of the U13 girls national championships in Alice Springs. This presents us with a very busy schedule and any assistance that you the NTHA patrons could provide would be very much welcomed and appreciated. If you have skills that you believe would be helpful in the running of these tournaments or would like to become involved as an official, please contact Baden or the rest of his team. I’m sure they would love to hear from you and will provide you with everything you need to help you put your skills to good use.

Finally, we are currently working on revising and updating the NTHA Constitution. This is necessary to make it compliant with the NT Associations Act. Thankfully, I have found that the changes required are only minor and I therefore hope to have a fully compliant copy out soon for public comment before we formally adopt it at a Special General Meeting in the not too distant future.

In closing, I would like to thank the rest of the volunteer NTHA board for their efforts this year. Your wisdom and enthusiasm has made the job of administering hockey in the NT a lot easier than it otherwise could have been. Maintaining your sense of humour when dealing with some of my idiosyncratic methods and eccentricities has been much appreciated. It is my sincere hope that you all stay on for at least another year.

Yours in Hockey,

Andrew Hullick President NTHA

EXECUTIVE OFFICERS REPORT

Hockey NT has enjoyed a reasonable amount of success over the last 12 months with Des Abbott’s contribution to our World Cup winning Kookaburra team in March. Joining Des in the Champions Trophy winning team in August was his cousin Joel Carroll and to see two Territorians representing our country brought great admiration and accolades from the Northern Territory community. Their following success at the Commonwealth Games and Des Abbotts selection in the Federation of International Hockey’s World Team was the icing on the cake for Territory Hockey. Jeremy Hayward’s success as a member of the inaugural gold medallist winning team at the youth Olympics and his brother’s selection in the Australia A team was a culmination of representative honours for the Territory. Heather Langham’s selection in the Australian women’s squad was a just reward for her commitment and time spent honing her skills to become one of the countries up and coming Hockeyroos.

Sponsors

The Northern Territory Government, through the Department of Sport and Recreation, and Northern Territory Institute of Sport, continue to be a major contributor to NT Hockey. Without their help we could not continue to have international class facilities and send away eight State teams every year. We would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support of the following sponsors;

Darwin Airport Resort, Channel 9, Imparja Television, Cazalys Palmerston Club, TIO, Flight Centre, Security Technology Services, Davis Langdon Engineering, Movement For Life Physiotherapy, Auto Care Body Repair Specialists, Moorish Café, Waste Solutions, BM Insurance Brokers, Dabsco, All Financial Services, Quality Aluminium, Specsavers, Team Sport Surfaces, OAMPS, Hockey World, Express Signs, Westpac and Austec Irrigation.

Development

Hockey NT appointed a new Development Officer in August. This addition will see the expansion and growth of hockey at the grass roots level through the involvement within the community development of hockey in the NT. With the introduction of training camps and squads for our u13 development teams we are looking to build depth and strength in our junior programs. With our eyes firmly focused on junior development and player retention our DO will give us a greater opportunity to impact on all levels of hockey currently being played in the NT. Our vision is to engage the development of hockey in as many Aboriginal Communities as possible through partnering with the Indigenous Sports Commission.

Hockey NT - 2010 Annual Report Page 13 Events

Hockey NT hosted the 2nd round of the women’s AHL this year and also hosted the women’s U15 National Championship in late September. A highlight for both our U15 boys and girls were the Territory titles held in June, seeing the best players within this age group participate. From this competition both Territory U15 squads were selected with some outstanding potential identified.

Conclusion

With success on the international stage, through our two current Kookaburras and one Hockeyroo, Hockey NT is gaining great exposure within the Territory. With ongoing development in mind we hope to unearth further talent to add to the Nations current depth and wealth of outstanding hockey players.

I would like to thank our Patron Delia Lawrie whose support of Hockey NT is greatly appreciated, all our staff, representative team coaching staff, the board members of Hockey NT and all volunteers for giving up their time to participate in contributing to this great sport we all enjoy.

Summary:

2011 promises to be a very busy and exciting year for the development of our players, coaches and officials. We are fortunate to be hosting the AHL women's finals week in June and this should be a good opportunity to hold clinics and seminars with some of ’s high performance people and hopefully some Australian players. There are plans in motion to get hockey back into the schools and out to the more remote areas of the Northern Territory which will hopefully see an increase in junior players for all of our clubs.

I plan to hold meetings with each club and offer support with coaches by holding Coach the Coaches sessions to ensure that all our juniors are being taught correctly. I will have a lot of resources available for volunteer coaches and plan to help out as much as possible. I plan to hold a lot more specialist clinics throughout the 2011 season which will include specific skills such as drag flicking, goal scoring and tackling. These clinics will be available to all junior and senior players who would like to improve their game. Accreditation of coaches and umpires will also be made a priority in 2011 and I will work to ensure that all our coaches / umpires are receiving the latest information. I am certainly looking forward to the year ahead and also looking forward to forming a solid working relationship with all our clubs.

NTIS Annual Report 2010

2010 turned out to be an historic golden year for the NTIS Hockey Program.

Success

At the conclusion of 2010 the NTIS had the highest number of athletes in its history in Australian Teams and squads and had a record 5 athletes with AIS scholarships.

- Des Abbott won Gold with the Kookaburras at the 2010 World Cup. - Joel Carroll then joined forces with Des in the Kookaburras team and won Gold at the Champions Trophy and Commonwealth Games. - Jeremy Hayward won Gold at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games - Heather Langham won the NT Junior Sports Star award and The NT Young Achiever in Sport awards following her successful debut in the Hockeyroos and Silver medal at the 2009 Champions Trophy.

Closer to home we had many NTIS athletes continue on their pathway to success. Many athletes represented the NT at National Championships at all age groups. Congratulations must go to those who won awards due to their performances at these Championships.

Futures Camps - Brooke Peris, Caitlin Porter, Elizabeth Duguid, Dwayne Abbott and Stewart Bryson all took part in the National Futures Camps aimed at developing those players who are eligible for the Junior World Cup in 2013.

National Development Camp - At a more senior level Tarrant Haami-Jones, Robert Duguid, Adrian Lockley and Jeremy Hayward were all invited to attend

All athletes who attended the camps performed very admirably and we are proud of their efforts.

The centralised program at the NTIS continues to develop with several initiatives coming to fruition.

Assistant Coaches

In 2010 we added a second assistant coach in Craig Curby who along with Mark Davis worked with the Tier 2 program and the younger athletes.

Several guest coaches were utilised in skill sessions, which proved very successful and will be continued on in 2011.

Hockey NT - 2010 Annual Report Page 19 Athlete Development - the physical development of players has remained a focus in the NTIS Hockey program and thanks must go to the S&C staff at the NTIS for all their efforts.

Regular speed and strength sessions are part of every Tier 1 athletes daily training environment and all Tier 2 athletes were provided with an individual home program to assist in their own physical development

Education and Nutrition sessions were established. These were extremely well attended and received by athletes and parents. 2 Shopping Tours and Cooking classes were delivered to the U18 athletes. Meals were a success and new ideas flourished on what could be cooked when away at Nationals Championships.

Drug Education, Respect & Responsibility and public speaking courses were also delivered to the Hockey athletes.

Specialist Skills this was established in an effort to boost the number of athletes who can successfully perform this skill at National Championships.

The program was piloted with male athletes in 2010 taking regular video footage, accuracy and speed scores in the process.

This program was very successful and as such will continue on in 2011 with a female version also being implemented.

Conclusion

The NTIS Hockey program continues to grow – largely thanks to the support and hard-work of the athletes and staff who continually search for excellence.

I would like to thank the contributions and guidance that NTHA, DHA and HA staff make every day in order for our program to grow.

Darwin Hockey Association

PRESIDENTS REPORT 2010

Darwin Hockey Association (DHA) would like to recognise those individuals who continue to give enormous amounts of their personal time and dedication to the success of our sport. Volunteers, athletes, coaches, officials and administrators play an important part of the overall success of the sport.

I am grateful for the support and commitment of the DHA committee who have ensured sound governance and effective operation of the organisation.

DHA is a very strong part of the sporting community in Darwin.

It is reassuring the way DHA and Clubs have combined together to reinforce the strength and positive features of the management and good governance of our sport. Our common goal of strengthening hockey, lifting the profile of the game, implementing umpiring programs whilst trying to attract more people to participate has been and will continue to be a focal point for the future success of DHA.

We all know the difficulties associated with getting volunteers and if participation is going to increase, it is because there is a commitment from volunteers in our sport .The community aspect of our sport is totally reliant on the quality and number of these people. There is undoubtedly strength in unity and we must work together to reach these goals.

Sportsmanship and Behavior

The committee along with the clubs have continued to encourage good sportsmanship and acceptable behaviours. Through this approach there has been a significant improvement in attitudes in behavior this season contributed to club officials getting behind the zero tolerance approach.

Umpiring

I would like to acknowledge the tremendous effort of the DHA Junior Umpire Coordinator this year. He implemented and adopted the “Coloured Shirt Program” (CSP). This program promoted umpires undertaking training and made them easily identifiable by the wearing of a brightly coloured shirt with “Umpire Under Training” on the back. This program was also designed to stem the verbal abuse from players, spectators and team officials. DHA implemented this program into their local competition. The Northern Territory Government then supplied DHA with the coloured shirts, education pack, a banner and posters. The interest shown by the younger prospective umpires (ages 11 – 13) was fantastic.

Hockey NT - 2010 Annual Report Page 21 He spent tireless hours coordinating the junior umpires and mentors each week. He was at the junior games each Friday and Saturday offering encouragement and ensuring the junior umpires presented themselves in a professional manner.

The feedback that has been received is that the CSP program has been very successful within the Darwin hockey community - the junior umpires appear very professional (CSP shirts, suitable footwear & whistle), they are regularly rostered to umpire junior games along with mentors each weekend. Hockey games start on time, match cards checked feed back is offered.

Junior umpires attended training clinics offered and you could see their improvements weekly. All umpires were encouraged to complete their formal registration on the website in order to do their theory component with weekly reminders from the DHA Junior Umpire Coordinator helped to achieve the desired results.

Finally I would like to express my appreciation to the Executive Committee for their tireless effort and patience, to the Club representatives on the management committee for their forbearance and to all the volunteers who collectively bring considerable expertise and experience to the organisation.

Alice Springs Hockey Association

PRESIDENTS REPORT

The Year in Review;

1. To strengthen the club structure (a process started in 2008) 2. To enhance the participation of club members in organizing the senior competition. 3. To build a solid foundation for future hockey with junior players. 4. To strengthen the working of the match committee. This committee included a player from each club and one committee member. Their brief was to appoint umpires and tech bench operators. (At times it was difficult to find enough umpires). I feel that generally these aims where achieved and we are slightly stronger than last season.

A PLEA FOR VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are the most important asset for any association. All sports and community organizations compete for the time of volunteers.

The Alice Springs Hockey association has been fortunate in that we have nearly always had a small (sometimes very small) group of willing volunteers to look after our sport.

To enable players to enjoy hockey each week, there is much work to be done behind the scenes. At least two of the four members of the Executive Committee are there every Saturday from daybreak till dusk. As well as the routine tasks, they have assisted in all facets of hockey from administration to ground maintenance. The greatest difficulty we now face and in reality have faced for some years is that in the end, that these people suffer from “burn out”.

We need you, members of the association to put your hand up to volunteer in a number of areas:

Working bee’s, cleaning up after the match or serving in the canteen. We also need people to make commitments to positions such as facilities, Junior Coordinator, coaching coordinator, sponsorship and marketing, media and most of all coaches for the junior teams.

I thank all those volunteers who have contributed throughout the year. Without your efforts the Association could not and would not function as it has.

Competitions

Seniors;

This year we had 3 senior men’s teams and 4 senior women’s teams in the competition.

The seniors got off to a fairly shaky start once again. The fourth Men’s team didn’t quite get off the ground and Centrals women struggled to make the numbers all season. On the whole

Hockey NT - 2010 Annual Report Page 23 the comp went well in both the men’s and women’s. Regular attendance at training sessions should be encouraged.

ALL CLUBS ARE URGED TO RECRUIT NEW MEMBERS FOR NEXT SEASON.

Centrals were the minor premiers in the men’s competition with Desert Sharks the minor premiers in the women’s competition.

Congratulations to all team members.

Under 10’s

There was a large group of under 10’s who came down on Monday afternoons for training after ASHA ran the school blitz. These numbers dwindled near the end of the season due to some progressing up to the under 13’s and the coach being ill. Thank You to Daryl Smith for taking over from Bill.

Under 13’s

It was planned to organise a comp for the under 13’s for a Saturday morning. Due to lack of numbers it was decided to have a social comp with skills Olympics and medal presentations after the last game.

Under 15’s

An attempt to organise a comp for the under 15’s also failed due to lack of numbers. We had a social comp with a club team (Panthers) compete against a school team (OLSH). Thank You to Georgia Dempsey and Steve Versteegh for the efforts with the OLSH team. I would suggest that other schools where encouraged to put together teams for this competition.

The new committee is urged to arrange visits to schools early in the New Year and offer coaching clinics at the school or at the Hockey Centre in order to attract interested students. NTHA now has a Development Officer to assist with this.

The outcome would be to encourage enough students and staff in schools to form an inter primary school competition.

I would also like to suggest that the incoming committee consider a 6 week indoor hockey competition in the off season in a hope to recruit junior players.
