PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2014

What a great year we have had in 2014.

I would like to thank all of the Volunteers that helped with Hockey in 2014 your input is what makes our sport so successful. We have had a year where the whole NT Hockey community has been working together with the focus on growing our player numbers over the coming years.

Hockey NT with the strong support from the NT Masters, hosted the Australian Women’s Masters in July. This was a very successful event with excellent feedback from all teams and states. I would like to congratulate all of Hockey NT staff and Volunteers for their hard work at this event.

Congratulations to all our all our State teams and their support staff for their strong and proud representation of the NT, with a very big thank you to all the people who were involved with getting our teams ready.

Well done to our hard working HPC over the last 12 months, we have seen many changes in the way we look at our state teams, both players and support staff with lots great support from all involved

Thank you to Ian Harkness and his team for all their hard work in 2014 keeping our Centre running smoothly and the correctional service gentlemen for all their help.

To Our sponsors, I wish to thank you for Your support in 2014 and look forward to your continued support in the coming year.

Our web site is updated in line with Hockey and you will notice that there is a lot more information available and is being updated regularly. A big thank you to Mark Davis for all the work he has put into this over the last 12 months.

Congratulations to Brooke Peris, Jeremy and Leon Hayward for making the Australian teams during 2014 and look forward to their continued success over the next 12 months.

We will be hosting the Men’s AHL with the Men’s Under 13s in September and look forward to seeing everyone there to support our teams.

We finished the year with wet season competitions and the support for this competition was great with 16 teams involved in the Senior Women’s and Mixed Social divisions, a great way to end the year.

A call for all those who would like to be involved in the future development of Hockey in the NT, it is the volunteers that keep our sport growing and remember it is our Association.

A big thank you to the NTHA Board for all their support and help over the last 12 months and look forward to another very busy year. Thank you to Eric Bailey for his support on the Board and wish you well as you move into a new chapter in your life.

EXECUTIVE OFFICERS REPORT 2014

2014 was aimed at establishing a base in the areas of core responsibility that Hockey NT manages and this will now be reported on under the following headings:-

 Management  State Teams  Facilities  Events  Development

Management – the main project during the period was to address the outdated governance structure that the sport currently operates under and whilst a template Constitution and By Laws were prepared for adoption the project has been unable to be finalised for varying reasons. At the current time both ASHA and DHA have expressed formal support for the new structure and we continue to have dialogue with the Masters with the hope that it can be finalised early in 2015.

From the staffing structure perspective there has been consistency throughout the year which has allowed new approaches and initiatives to be pursued with the knowledge of incumbents pivotal to establishing new systems and processes for a better delivery to the membership.

State Teams – Through the efforts of the High Performance Committee (HPC) there have been more timely systems established from the nomination process, the trials and final team selections which has provided a more professional approach. The establishment of standard fitness and skill testing and retention of records for future comparison allows for tracking of athletes and age demographics for coming years.

The disappointment of the year was the inability to send away a team in the Women’s Under 21 Category and this was the catalyst for a review into the Associations development programs and retention strategy for athletes as there were also worrying signs in other categories when the nomination process was started.

We have also been put on notice by the Government regarding the lack of NT based athletes in the AHL teams and this has been earmarked for attention early in 2015 to ensure that more NT originating or based players are participating in these teams.

The teams and their performances for 2014 are identified within the Booklet.

Facilities – Due to the financial performance of the Association during the period some improvements were able to be made to the Marrara Complex including the reinforcing the concrete at the base of the light poles on Turf 1, the painting of the external lower deck of the main grandstand including the tunnels to the change rooms, considerable work done on the lighting and the irrigation systems, new chairs and screens for the technical bench areas on both turfs and the repair to the grass area and plants in the barbeque area

It is clear that with an ageing building, maintenance work is increasing annually and already for 2015 there will be a need for extensive work on the plumbing / toilet facilities.

Hockey NT - 2014 Annual Report Page 6 As part of the upkeep of the facility I would like to acknowledge the support of the Department of Corrections and their work crews who visit us on a fortnightly basis to maintain the grounds, their efforts allow the facility to be presented in a high standard.

Events – Clearly the major event of the year was the hosting of the Women’s Masters National Championships and this was successfully undertaken through the support of many people but particularly the Organising Committee and staff who worked long hours to deliver a quality event.

The size of the event brought to light some deficiencies within the Marrara complex and these will need to be addressed prior to the Men’s AHL scheduled for Darwin in September 2015.

Due to the scheduling of the Women’s Masters, the NT Under 15 Championships were rescheduled to the September school holidays and whilst there was representation from Darwin based athletes and a contingent from Alice Springs who travelled by bus there is a need to have a good look at this event to further enhance its position in the calendar.

The Wet Season 7’s in late 2014 was a success with terrific numbers especially in the social mixed category and, again, this base should be aimed to be capitalised upon in the future.

Development – Whilst there is a development report within the Booklet it is relevant to note probably what was the most exciting initiative during the year, that being the review of the Hockey NT squad programs. The review that was undertaken leading to the revised tier program of Development Squad, Academy Squad, Youth Squad and Emerging Athlete Program and having the squads come together for periods based on the school terms rather than six (6) week blocks has seen improvements in athlete skill levels but also in the nominating numbers for the various lower age State Teams.

The concept that we wish to retain athletes in the sport will see any player who is not selected in a State team continue to receive skill development through these programs and not be lost to the sport as may have been the case previously.

Summary – there has been much achieved in 2014 and if I were to individually name everyone that has made a contribution we would need many more pages so I would like to thank anyone and everyone that has made a contribution to the sport in whatever role or capacity they did so whether it be at Club, Association or State level.

Having said that I would like to thank the staff of Hockey NT for the efforts through this period as many positives have been achieved through your commitment.

I look forward to a bigger and better 2015 for this wonderful sport !

TREASURER’S REPORT 2014

Please find following copies of the 2013 / 2014 Audit Report and I am pleased to report a surplus for the period of $2121.89, which is the third consecutive year that the Association has recorded a surplus. During the year the accounts were reviewed and restructured to reflect the five (5) core areas that Hockey NT delivers its services and the accompanying Profit & Loss Report reflects that approach. The period presented opportunities for the Association to expend in some areas not previously readily available to do so and the reasons for that are identified below.  During the period we were fortunate to have a revenue stream from the conduct of the Women’s Masters National Championships in that the turf hire associated with the event has been different to that of other National Championships, in this case it is an actual income and not a case of each state absorbing the cost based on all hosting a particular event.  There was also a moderate amount of revenue from the sale of merchandise during the Championships.  Stability was experienced with our corporate partners and leading into 2015 only four (4) are scheduled for renewal with the vast majority having at least one (1) more year to run.  The previously budgeted expenditure figure associated with Affiliate development levies was not applied due to a philosophical change in that such programs should be encompassed within the identified affiliation fees.  The Women’s Under 21 team not participating in 2014 meant a saving from the aspect of the provided subsidy level allowing expenditure in other areas.  The decision not to replace the Facility Manager when he resigned in early 2014 meant a saving with a more monitored approach to the program required to maintain the facility.  There was an overall reduction in wages for the Association of $20,000. With these factors other expenditure was able to be undertaken with upgrades to the facility as mentioned in the Executive Officers report and it allowed some of our identified female athletes to be exposed to the FHE Cup event in in late November along with increased support to the athletes in Alice Springs to be considered for State team selection. Whilst this was all good for 2014 the caution is that this opportunity is not likely to be repeated to the same extent in 2015 with more traditional expenditure areas catered for. This in turn does raise a question with regard to the ageing facility needing attention whilst, at the same time, catering for the State Team representatives with a subsidy allowing them to participate in the various events. It is noted that the membership levies and the facility hire costs have remained stagnant for a period of time and it will be necessary for a review to occur during the coming year to ascertain if an increase is warranted. All in all, with what has been achieved in 2014 with the amount of improvements to our facility and the development programs the end of year result of a $2121.89 surplus is a pleasing result and I submit the audit report for your acceptance.

DEVELOPMENT REPORT 2014

2014 has been another successful year for development of the game in the Northern Territory. The past year has seen a major focus on coaches and officials’ accreditation where many of our active members have gained new or have had their existing levels of accreditation updated. It is hoped that within the next two years that all junior players will be coached by an accredited coach and that all games are officiated by accredited umpires. Below is a summary of all Hockey NT accreditations for 2014.

From 1/12/2013 to Total Current Hockey ED Course 30/11/2014 Accreditations Community Coach 46 54 Level 1 Coach 14 14 Level 2 Coach 14 23 Advanced Coach 1 1 Community Umpire 74 80 Level 1 Umpire 17 21 Level 2 Umpire 2 2 L1 Tech Official 17 18 L2 Tech Official 0 2 L2 Umpire Coach 1 1 Totals 186 216

Player Recruitment During term one the DHA clubs were offered to participate in the delivery of hockey sessions to Active After School Centres. A six week Hook in2 Hockey program was designed with the seventh week being held at the Marrara Hockey Stadium with all the Centres participating in skill drills and small games. The event was successful for the clubs that participated as they were able to promote their junior teams direct to the participant’s parents/guardians. In 2014 there were 168 new registrations of 5 to 12 year olds compared to 136 last year. Development Squads Our development squads were restructured in 2014 to address the problem of low State Team nominations. Squads were split into the following 4 levels: Stinger & Pearls Development Squad – Under 13 Stinger & Pearls Academy Squad – Under 15 Stinger & Pearls Youth Squad – 16 to 21 year olds Emerging Athlete Program (EAP) – Selected squad and serviced by NTIS Head Hockey Coach The branding of the squads were designed to encourage and highlight the player pathway from under 13 to AHL. All training singlet’s featured the AHL team’s logos. The squads are now open and free of charge for all registered players in Darwin and the Alice Springs area except for the EAP which is a selection program and features athletes who excel at National Championships and show potential to gain a NTIS scholarship. Athletes in the Academy and Development Squads can also be advanced to the higher level squad after showing potential. The squads are also in line with our Coaches development program which features free of charge Hockey Ed accreditation for coaches who become involved with the development squads.

Hockey NT - 2014 Annual Report Page 9 Throughout the year we were also fortunate to receive specialist coaching from the following high performance coaches and players: Larry Macintosh – Former Kookaburra and NSW Coach Craig Victory – Hockeyroos Assistant Coach Jeremy Hayward – Kookaburras Brooke Peris – Hockeyroos Liz Duguid – Hockeyroos Development Squad Nathan Burgers – Former Kookaburra Olympian Goal Keeper We would also like to thank the following local coaches who made the squads very successful for 2014: Michelle Caden – Youth Squad coach David Skippings, Jason Lowe – Youth Squad specialist coaches Pennie Weedon, Dieter Mittermayer, Belinda Howie – Academy squad coaches Christine Bilato, David Auld, Jason Grace, Sean Cooke – Development squad coaches

Hockeyroo Development squad member and Pearls Captain Lizzy Duguid with members of the U15 Academy Squad.

Alice Springs Alice Springs has continued it’s after school mid-week competition with 161 students participating throughout the year. This program will be affected next year by the change in the After school care structure. It is still unclear of how schools will interact with NSO’s In the future but there should be an improvement on the current structure. Hockey Ed community level coach and umpire courses were also presented in Alice Springs which were very successful and well attended and supported by the Alice Hockey community. NT Under 15 Championships This year the tournament was moved to the September school holiday and was played over two days. This year a new structure was trialed where all players nominated to participate in the event and then were placed into teams by HNT selectors. This took the pressure off the Darwin clubs to field teams. Alice Springs was well represented with a full boys team competing and eight girls who were placed into teams. Holiday Camps It was another successful year for our Holiday Camp program with over 80 participants for the year. The camps run for three days and are designed for the total beginner or current players. The camps are also a great opportunity for our older players to gain experience working with kids and carrying out skill sessions and fun based games.

Darwin Hockey Association

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2014

Success for any sporting association or administrative body is best measured in terms of the level of enjoyment, participation, involvement and contribution of volunteers, players, supporters and members throughout the season. As many of you know if volunteers did not put their hands up and give many tireless hours of unpaid contribution towards the successful running of any organisation or association these organisation or associations would not be able to function. This year the DHA Executive was ran by five people. This five people whether willingly or not volunteered to fill a roll within the Association for the simple enjoyment of seeing success. These people also have work and family commitments. While the committee was faced with a number of challenges and tensions during the season, DHA coped well. Clubs need to offer more support to the Association, they just cannot just sit back and expect be on the receiving end and showing only a little support to DHA. Every decision made is made with the understanding that the six Darwin Clubs have made a contribution. The Executive Committee look at the larger picture and how things operate and what is in the best interest of hockey in general. Not how the Clubs want individual decisions for their club only. This is not saying that the Clubs didn’t support DHA just that we all need to work together for the overall result of “enjoyment, participation, involvement and contribution” and the desire to support players and provide a positive environment in which to play and enjoy sport. Acknowledgement also goes to the coaches, umpires, mentors, committee persons; tech bench persons, parents, managers and players all play a role. These volunteers generally go unrewarded and in most instances unacknowledged. DHA embraced the many difficulties with the delay of the One Sports Technology (OST) not being available until round 9 of the competition. This delayed the ladders and results in the system but DHA willingly accepted and dealt with these difficulties in a positive way which permitted the season to progress. Once all of the delays were dealt with the DHA were able finalised the balance of the season. Umpiring A special thank you to both Ian Berry (Vice President Umpire) for his coordination of centrally managing and rostering umpires each week for A, B grades and U16 grades. This gentleman gave many hours of unpaid dedication to ensuring that each and every game had umpires available. He worked tirelessly drawing up rosters each week, to find that some umpires failed to turn up without notification resulting in him chasing last minute umpires and ensuring each game commenced on time. Its volunteers like these that make an Association function smoothly. Whilst all this work has taken place it was apparent that there still continues to be verbal abuse to umpires from players, coaches and supporters. DHA have a zero tolerance to such behaviour. It just doesn’t need to be the Presidents or committee members to be the only persons to take action, it needs the full support of each and everyone involved with the Association to stamp out this behaviour. Good player and sportsmanship behaviours will allow for the game to flow without these incidents occurring. We have lost umpires because of these occurrences, umpires who have previously put their hands up. Don’t just sit back and enjoy your hockey game, give some consideration to the officials and if you have to say anything, think twice if you would like to receive the same treatment. To all the umpires for the 2014 season a huge thank you. Without umpires there would be no games. Please continue your good work into the future. Technical Bench Technical bench persons have always been a requirement within DHA for a number of years. Since the introduction of the green card, 2 minute rule,(with 5 minute, yellow card being in existence for some time now) it is and has been a requirement that both teams to supply a bench person. DHA have on two occasions offered a tech bench course with only one person attending. This course will be offered

Hockey NT - 2014 Annual Report Page 11 again during the 2015 season. Hockey NT during the Australian Women’s Veterans Championships ran the official technical official course and it was well attended. This will mean there are now a number of qualified persons within our Association who could also assist in the future. Volunteers Finally, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the support and commitment of the Executive Committee for their tireless effort and patience in ensuring the good governance and effective operation of the Association. I appreciate the demands on their time, and the considerable expertise and experience they bring to the organisation and to the Club representatives on the Management Committee for their support, advice and assistance during the 2014 season. I would also like to acknowledge the positive and effective engagement between DHA and Hockey NT. Transparency and communication is the key to purposeful engagement. I would also like to thank our sponsors, Westpac Darwin for sponsoring the A Grade Women’s competition and to Territory Trophies for sponsoring the A Grade Men’s competition. Long term goal would be to have sponsorship for all grades. To the outgoing DHA committee members I wish you well in any future endeavours and to the newly elected office bearer for 2015, all the best.

PRESIDENTS REPORT 2014

2014 has been a reasonably successful year for the Alice Springs Hockey Association. While there remains work to be done in improving the way we function, and in developing and growing our competitions, a lot has been achieved this year and our local sport is in a healthy condition. Senior Competition This year we maintained our Senior Competition with four Men’s teams – Stunts, Warriors, Desert Sharks and Centrals, and four Women’s teams – Gillen Divas, Legends, Desert Sharks and Centrals. We had 170 people take part in the competitions with 129 playing 3 or more games and 110 becoming registered financial members. Of the 170 that competed 78 were female and 92 were male. We had 21 juniors playing in our senior competitions including 8 U/13 boys playing in the Women’s Competition. While some teams struggled for numbers at various times throughout the year, there were only 2 forfeits. The presence of the U/13 boys playing in the Women’s Competition and the ability of our Development and Academy players to play multiple matches has assisted in reducing the number of forfeits. As numbers firmed with the approach of finals all teams had a full complement of players, and were competitive in the finals. We introduced a Best and Fairest Vote Count Night which was relatively successful with it being our first. Congratulations to John Kenna for winning the Men’s Best and Fairest, and to Kate Odgers who won the Women’s Best and Fairest. Junior Competition Our school-based Primary School Competition continued to be popular last summer with 6 teams competing – Ross Park, Braitling, Bradshaw, Araluen, Tangentyere and a mixed side. However it once again fell away over the winter months as players were drawn away to other sports. Over the winter months it became a training session, with enthusiastic athletes joining the Senior and Social Competitions. There remained insufficient numbers to have a stand-alone U/15 competition, with players in this age group needing to join the Senior or Social Competitions. The Social Competition proved to be popular with many of these junior players since they could join the adults in playing friendly, less competitive games. Social Hockey This year we decided to keep Wednesday Night Social Hockey running throughout the year for players who wanted a fun game without the competitiveness of the Senior Competition. It proved very popular with up to 35 players taking part each week. Social Hockey had the added benefit of providing a link between junior players wanting more competition and experienced Club-based adult players. It also gave a boost to our canteen sales. Representative Players We had several players represent the Northern Territory at National Championships. William Schwalger in the U/13 boys, Joshua Macdonald in the U/15 boys, Madlen Jones in the U/18 Women and Caleb Macdonald in the U/21 Men. Our congratulations goes to each of these players and we hope that our hockey community here in Alice Springs continues to support the development of these and other talented players. We also sent a group of U/15 boys and girls to compete in the NT U/15 Championship in Darwin. Despite there only being a small number of teams playing, it was a relatively successful trip that provided a great opportunity for our juniors to compare their skills with their peers in the North.

Hockey NT - 2014 Annual Report Page 13 New Initiatives We have introduced a few new things this year aside from year-round Social Hockey. We started an Alice Springs Hockey Facebook page to better network and inform the community about hockey (if you haven’t checked it out I encourage you to do so). We produced an email newsletter several times this year to keep our members informed about what’s happening, about any hockey opportunities available and about the achievements of our members. We expanded our registration payment options to include direct debit and online credit card payments, to make it easier, and we created the option of online member registration. While the uptake of this was minimal this year we expect that it will become the preferred option in coming years. Thankyou A big thankyou to all those who have volunteered to help throughout the year. Particular thanks must go to Goodie for the massive effort he continues to put into hockey looking after our finances, our hockey facilities and our canteen; to David Hanley for the huge amount of time he’s put into our Juniors; to Dale Hiscox for taking on the D.O position and the work he puts into Social Hockey; to Steve Shields for all the assistance he’s provided behind the scenes; to Manekha Byerley for the work she has done with our developing athletes; and to Mark Walsh for taking on the coaching of our Development and Academy Squads. Thankyou also to Rachael Mashford for developing our Facebook presence. Looking Forward There are three key things that are needed for the health of hockey in Alice Springs:-  People who are willing to volunteer their time and effort to organise our sport.  Our members to promote hockey through their own networks so that we can keep getting new players.  A strong Junior Competition and development pathway to provide us with the players of the future.

Northern Territory Masters Hockey Association

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2014

As expected, 2014 was a very busy year for NTMHA with some very positive results, good feedback and many challenges. We had many Masters 7 aside events during the year, were involved with the Women’s Masters national tournament in Darwin and had extensive discussions on the future of Masters hockey within the Northern Territory. We are looking forward to more successful events and the continued support of the Masters hockey legends during 2015.

The NT hosted the Australian Women’s Masters Championships in Darwin during July, which saw 34 teams and almost 700 participants and is the second largest national tournament in the HA annual calendar. The Women’s Masters Teams Committee started organizing the NT teams early in the year, calling for nominations for players and officials resulting in the selection of a total of 4 NT representative teams - Women’s Masters over 35s, over 45s, over 50s and the legendary over 60s. Some of the NTMHA members were also on the Women’s Masters organizing committee in addition to playing in the NT Teams. With everyone’s contribution, it was a truly successful tournament, enjoyed by both the players and spectators. Thank you and congratulations to all the Masters volunteers for the great team work.

The Men’s Masters Teams travelled to Perth. The Men’s over 50s had a great win against Tasmania, but lost to WA in the semi-final and finished in 4th place on goal difference. The Men’s over 55s had a good win against Queensland, lost in the classification finals and finished in 6th place. Both teams played in Division 2 of the Australian Men’s Masters Championships.

The Women’s teams played with true sportsmanship with their “can do” attitude, challenged the stronger opposing teams on many occasions and simply enjoyed themselves. The Women’s over 35s drew against WA and finished in 6th place, over 45s drew against SA and finished in 7th place, over 50s drew against SA and finished in 6th place, and the evergreens over 60s finished in 6th place and were awarded the Play the Whistle Award. Congratulations Ladies, wonderful effort.

During 2014, the hockey awards and achievements included:

NT Sports Awards 2014:- Julie Hoare was shortlisted as a finalist in the NT Masters Sportsperson of the Year Award 2014

International and National Tours 2014 - Australian Women’s Masters over 55s Team:- Jane Slater – Intergenerational Tour, 8-11 May 2014 in England

Women’s Masters Service Awards – Northern Territory:- Awarded to Yvonne Osborne, Annabell McLellan, Jane Slater International and National Selections - 2015 Australian Women’s Masters Teams/Squads:- Samantha Spry (over 35s), Julie Hoare (over 50s shadow player), Jane Slater (over 55s), Lou Goriss (over 60s shadow player)

Hockey NT - 2014 Annual Report Page 15 More importantly all our Masters teams had a lot of fun in the true Masters tradition, capping off a great year for NT Masters teams.

Later in 2013, NTMHA organized a Masters 7 aside team competition and then early 2014 a Masters 7s social competition on Friday nights. There were regular player numbers for these events which is indicative that the Masters prefer to play hockey against people in similar age groups combined with the social interaction in a relaxed hockey scene. Similarly, the pre-season Masters 7s carnival played in a round robin format, was well supported by the Darwin Clubs, with 5 Women’s and 5 Men’s teams participating in a one day event.

Our Association in 2014 saw our membership increased to 215, and we ask all our members to encourage others to join, whether they are current active hockey community members or former hockey people who have drifted away from our sport. Masters is about participating and enjoying hockey with a strong social element to it. Most of our members have been an integral part of Hockey for a number of years as players, club members and administrators at all levels. NTMHA’s aim is to work with DHA, ASHA, NTHA and especially the CLUBS to keep Masters aged people participating in Hockey for years to come.

2015 is shaping up to be a big year for NTMHA:

 Australian Women’s Masters Championships in Brisbane, September-October 2015  Australian Men’s Masters Championships in Cairns, September-October 2015  Masters Hockey Social 7’s In closing, I would especially like to thank the NTMHA committee for their commitment, dedication and support to me as President NTMHA. These Masters volunteers have done a fantastic job in making Masters Hockey bigger and better.

I hope to see you all out at the Hockey in 2015, participate, get involved and have fun - ENJOY.

Cheers Tony Wood President NTMHA

Conclusion

2014 has been a productive year for the program. The culture of the group has been excellent and athletes have continued to embrace the `coach each other’ approach. The implementation of physical competence and running technique/speed sessions for the EAP cohort has provided a great tool to ensure those athletes progressing through the EAP program will be better prepared when transitioning onto scholarship.

Depth within the athlete cohort has seen a number of NT based athletes start / continue their journey towards JWC selections in 2016 and 2020.

Hoping to explore further team/ squad development opportunities in 2015 – potential North Queensland visit, Malaysian competition opportunities as well as locking in guest coach visits. Happy with progress both with athlete cohort and my PD as a coach, but continue to be driven and progressive to ensure NTIS hockey programs continues to lead the way in producing nationally identified athletes.
