In our view, population dynamics will drive structural growth; realistic pricing will accelerate per capita growth, taking share from illicit alcohol in a continent where only 15% can currently afford a beer. Structurally protective "moats" and strong positions for established players help ensure sustainable profits. Any corporate activity would likely be limited to the last independent brewer, Castel, and consolidation in ancillary businesses including soft drinks. Yet no one has ever examined why this beer and not another was able to capture the global market for malt beverages. This is important from the point of view of the study of beer as a commodity, but its greater importance is in the way the spread of the Pilsner style serves as a visible, traceable marker for the changes wrought by globalization in an age of empire. Its spread was dependent not only on technological innovations and faster transportation, but also on the increased connectedness of the world, and on the political structures like empires that dominated the world at the time. Drawing upon a wide range of archival sources from Great Britain, Germany, Ireland, and South Africa, this study traces the spread in consumption and production of the Pilsner in the British Empire between 1870 and 1914. -

QUARTERLY SHAREHOLDER LETTER Investing in Africa 30 June 2020 Dear Shareholder, Africa has been a source of profitable investment ideas since we first bought grocery retailer Sefalana, in Botswana, thirty years ago. Despite often challenging operating environments many of our holdings delivered decent growth and one or two have been stunning. Excluding any commodity investments, which dance to a different tune, the main African investment story has been domestically focused franchises. Over the past 15 years, these investments have cumulatively contributed over 400bps of alpha. The largest contributor by country was South Africa, but Egypt, Kenya and Francophone West Africa have also added significantly. We have learned many lessons over the 30 years, perhaps most importantly at the macro level. It is easy to be seduced by the enormous growth potential, and we have developed specialised antennae to identify the various ways in which governments and policymakers can waste opportunities. Bad policy generally manifests in rising debt and currency devaluation; in the past ten years South Africa, Nigeria and Egypt have seen their currencies depreciate on average by 6‐7% a year. The less obvious effect of mismanagement is that a country grows below its potential, delaying the potential for large scale poverty reduction. But at the bottom‐up level, companies, like people, can be remarkably resilient and we have been impressed by the way our investments have been able to grow. What has become clear is that successful investing in Africa requires significant fundamental on‐the‐ground research; a long‐term horizon; business models that generate value for all stakeholders, not just a select few; a broad understanding of the license to trade (crucial in the absence of strong institutions); and a focus on the strategic value of rare, high quality, assets with strong economic moats. -

Today, it is present in over 170 countries, which it has grouped into 5 regions: Western Europe, the Americas, Central and Eastern Europe, Asia- Pacific and Africa and the Middle East. It is one of the flagship beer brands worldwide, standing in third place. In 2009, it posted net earnings of 1.055 billion euros and an output of 125.2 million hectolitres. It has 125 brewing plants throughout the world, 55,300 employees and over 200 brands of beer, with the foremost one being Heineken, due both to its popularity amongst consumers and to its sales turnover. It is a fourth generation family business, with 40% of its stock being free capital, and the other 60% is shared between the Heineken family (which owns 40%) and the beer company FEMSA. In Spain, Heineken has a 33% market share. The company’s timeline is described in the following table: GROUP The Group’s history dates back to 1864, when Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought the Haystack BEGINNINGS brewery in the centre of Amsterdam (The Netherlands). Gerard’s aim was to make beer (1863-1874) drinking palatable to the intellectual elites. The success of the business and growing demand led to a move to larger and more modern premises, located on the outskirts of the city, where he introduced a ground-breaking system of fermentation. -

Leigh Anderson EPAR Brief No. 269 Prepared for the Agricultural Policy Team of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Professor Leigh Anderson, Principal Investigator Associate Professor Mary Kay Gugerty, Principal Investigator May 21, 2014 Summary of Key Findings Drinking Patterns & Commercial Alcohol Production • While total alcohol consumption in Africa has been relatively stable over the past twenty years (1990-2010), some countries have experienced increases or decreases in total alcohol consumption in the past ten years. These changes are partially driven by changing income, employment rates, or availability of commercially produced alcohol. • Abstention is still the most common drinking pattern in SSA. Six of the forty-three African countries (Algeria, Guinea, Senegal, Niger, Mali, and Mauritania) had abstention rates over 90% in the prior twelve months, and abstention rates in most countries (36 out of 43) is between 50% and 89%. • Recent data suggest that market liberalization has increased the availability of alcohol, particularly for groups of lower socio-economic status (SES), increasing consumption particularly among those who face the greatest social burden. • Multinational brewing companies in SSA have shifted to local supply chains, and currently all major brewers partially substitute imported barley with sorghum and other locally produced crops. • While many countries in SSA have signed drug control and prevention conventions including the UN Drug Control Convention, national alcohol policies are a relatively recent development and have been subject to alcohol industry influence. Health Costs • In Sub-Saharan Africa, alcohol use contributed to 3.4% of total deaths and 2.2% of total DALYs in 2010. -

Originated from a series of acquisitions it has grown into a real beer behemoth. With the backing of 3G Capital and its three founders Jorge Lemann, Carlos Sicupara and Marcel Telles these three Brazilians stand behind some of the biggest mergers in history. Growing companies through mergers and extensive cost-cutting have proven a successful strategy. Now the company is experiencing declining growth, as demand for beer has stagnated. SABMiller is the world’s second biggest brewing company. With roots in South Africa, they have through a series of mergers and acquisitions, built up the company to a major player in emerging markets. Local presence and advanced distribution networks have made this company a global player. With significant earnings in Latin America and Africa the company is present in many of the markets ABInBev is not. With growth stagnating ABInBev has sought to buy SABMiller for a record 104-billion-dollars. We have in this paper investigated if this value makes sense for an individual investor from the side of ABInBev. We have first done two valuations of the companies, and then merged them to see what synergies could be achieved. Our analysis shows SABMiller company that before the rumors of the merger is over-valuated. -

However, the craft beer industry of South Africa is still in its infancy with an estimated market share of around two per cent of the total beer market. Even though the craft beer industry in South Africa is growing, there are only limited academic research on craft beer breweries in South Africa. The primary objective of the study is to explore and describe the challenged and opportunities facing the craft beer breweries in central South Africa. The four secondary objectives help to achieve the primary objectives. The literature review of Chapter 2 provided the necessary background on the craft beer industry needed for the conduction of the empirical study. This study follows a qualitative research method with a descriptive research approach. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from eight participants. These eight participants are owners of craft beer breweries in North West, Free State and Gauteng provinces. Thematic analysis was used as the data analysis technique. Through the qualitative interview, a total of ten themes were identified, seven of which were challenges and three opportunities. The participants described several sub-themes and categories.
