Catalogue of the African Studies Library Film Collection in UCT Libraries Special Collections Any queries regarding the ASL film collection please contact Bev Angus ([email protected]) Updated:June 2015 Introduction In film, as with all other African Studies material in Special Collections, we collect comprehensively on South and Southern Africa and we are also committed to strengthening and broadening our film coverage of the rest of Africa to meet existing needs and to create new opportunities for research. Film is a powerful and accessible medium for conveying the stories and images of Africa, past and present. The African continent has a long and proud tradition of film-making, and has produced many film-makers of international renown. Our collection contains documentaries, television series and feature films made by both African and international film-makers. Besides supporting the teaching and research programmes of the University of Cape Town, the African Studies Library makes provision for the preservation of the films in the collection. Please note: The films in the ASL are primarily for viewing by members of the University of Cape Town community. The website includes a searchable catalog, with film reviews and some tips on where to find items. The Nollywood Project http://nollywood.tumblr.com/ The Nollywood Project was launched "...to investigate the new West African video movie industry centered in Nigeria commonly known as 'Nollywood.” The website holds descriptions of the Nollywood research project in several phases, a media archive of photos, interviews and film clips. It also offers a bibliography of sources (with links to online full text) and related web links. South African National Film and Video Foundation http://nfvf.co.za/ The National Film and Video Foundation, touted on their webpage as the gateway to the South African film and television industry, promotes the equitable growth and development of the South African film and video industry. Producer: Plexus Films for Little Bird Series: Total soccer The vuvuzela is a piece of plastic in the shape of a horn that has somehow been adopted as a traditional South African musical instrument. Many people just think of it as a noise- making nuisance that features most prominently at soccer matches. However, to musicologist Pedro Espi-Sanchis it has the possibility of being turned into an orchestra. This would involve each player or groups of players representing just one note, with all of them together forming a chord. To try this out, he and Thandi Swartbooi, head of the music group Women Unite, launched a vuvuzela orchestra. With a core group from Cape Town, they first flew to the Free State to work with the enthusiastic Bloemfontein Celtic fans, teaching 60 of them to play a number of songs in just five days. Though this condition is much more prevalent than is generally thought, the medical profession has traditionally regarded it as an abnormality that has to be corrected, as a result of which others decide to which sex such individuals will belong but gender assignment does not solve problem of gender identity. Strong cultural taboos in most societies keep intersexuality a secret and the participants argue that prejudice will continue as long as intersexuality is considered a disease. This documentary raises the issues involved through the stories of Sally Gross and Nombulelo Soldaat, with additional comments from the medical profession.

    The African National Congress Centenary: a Long and Difficult Journey

    The African National Congress centenary: a long and difficult journey RAYMOND SUTTNER* The current political pre-eminence of the African National Congress in South Africa was not inevitable. The ANC was often overshadowed by other organiza- tions and there were moments in its history when it nearly collapsed. Sometimes it was ‘more of an onlooker than an active participant in events’.$ It came into being, as the South African Native National Congress (SANNC)," in $&$", at a time of realignment within both the white and the conquered black communities. In the aftermath of their victory over the Boers in the South African War ($(&&-$&#"), the British were anxious to set about reconciling their former enemies to British rule. This included allowing former Boer territories to continue denying franchise and other rights to Africans, thus disappointing the hopes raised by British under- takings to the black population during the war years. For Africans, this ‘betrayal’ signified that extension of the Cape franchise, which at that time did not discrimi- nate on racial grounds, to the rest of South Africa was unlikely. Indeed, when the Act of Union of $&$# transferred sovereignty to the white population even the Cape franchise was open to elimination through constitutional change—and in course of time it was indeed abolished. The rise of the ANC in context From the onset of white settlement of Africa in $*/", but with particular intensity in the nineteenth century, land was seized and African chiefdoms crushed one by one as they sought to retain their autonomy. The conquests helped address the demand for African labour both by white farmers and, after the discovery of diamonds and gold in $(*% and $((* respectively, by the mining industry.' * I am indebted to Christopher Saunders and Peter Limb for valuable comments, and to Albert Grundlingh and Sandra Swart for insightful discussions.

Abstract 2 Society in post-apartheid South Africa is highly polarised. Although racial apartheid ended in 1994, this paper shows that an economic and spatial apartheid is still in place. The country has been neoliberalised, and this paper concludes that a virtual democracy is in place, where the poor are excluded from decision-making. Urban shack-dwellers are constantly under threat of being evicted (often illegally) and relocated to peri-urban areas, where they become further marginalised. The further away from city centres they live, the less employment and education opportunities are available to them. The African National Congress (ANC) government claims to be moving the shack-dwellers to decent housing with better facilities, although there have been claims that these houses are of poor quality, and that they are in marginal areas where transport is far too expensive for residents to commute to the city for employment. The ANC is promoting ‘World Class Cities’, trying to facilitate economic growth by encouraging investment. They are spending much on the 2010 World Cup, and have been using the language of ‘slum elimination’.

Long Synopsis Eleven-year-old Cameron (David Mazouz) alarms his single mother Lindsay (Carice van Houten) when he begins isolating himself on the floor of his dark room, speaking in ancient languages and displaying other symptoms of demonic possession. Alerted to the situation, Vatican representative Camilla (Catalina Sandino Moreno) recruits wheelchair- bound scientist Dr. Seth Ember (Aaron Eckhart) to extract the evil spirit from the boy. A non-believer who drinks, smokes and prefers to think of his work as “eviction” rather than exorcism, Ember sets up shop with high-tech assistants Riley (Emily Jackson) and Oliver (Keir O’Donnell). Strapped into a life-support system, he enters Cameron’s subconscious mind, where the demon holds the boy captive in an imaginary dream world by appealing to his deepest desire: to be reunited with his estranged father Dan (Matt Nable). Driven by tragic events in his own traumatic past, Ember engages in a fierce battle with the crafty spirit. Ever mindful that the demon, known as “Maggie,” travels from one victim to the next through physical contact, Ember knows that his desperate attempt to save Cameron’s soul could make him the demon’s next host.
