New York Dolls - Cause CanedoRock New York Dolls - Cause... Mas info? www.rhino.com   New York Dolls:  David Johansen - voz Sylvain Sylvain - guitarra Steve Conte - guitarra Sami Yaffa - bajo Brian Delaney - bateria Brian Koonin - piano    Cause I sez so:  Cause I Sez So Muddy Bones Better Than Lonely So Long My World Ridiculous Temptation to Exist Making Rain Drowning Nobody Got No Bizness Trash Exorcism of Despair  http://canedorock.com Potenciado por Joomla! Alt-Nation: Three Shows, One Night, Good Luck Low Fidelity – Ready to POP(s) One of my favorite new spots in the city is POP. POP is an “emporium of popular culture” that just has the feel of strolling in and out of decades. I guess one could call it a thrift/antique shop, but to me it’s just a place with a lot of awesome shit. In addition to the shop, POP has a separate room for a gallery/performance space to host events like Low Fidelity. Low Fidelity will have all kinds of cool stuff happening with an exhibition of the works of Bobby Grossman, Doom Destiny collaboration with Shepard Fairey, and a performance by Mr. Buster Poindexter himself – David Johansen. Johansen, who should be in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame for fronting the seminal and hugely influential New York Dolls, is a reason to go. Johansen will be accompanied by Rhode Island Hall of Famer Mark Cutler on guitar in what promises to be a special treat of an evening. Don’t miss out on the night that Low Fidelity POP-ed in Providence. Low Fidelity takes place at POP on 219 W Park St. in Providence on October 7. Advance tickets are recommended and can be purchased here: stores.emporiumofpopularculture.com/low-fidelity- performance-by-david-johansen-exhibition-by-bobby-grossman-doom-destiny-collaboration-with-shepard- fairey. • NY ACKER Awards Is Taken from an Archaic Dutch Word Meaning a Noticeable Movement in a Stream
1 THE NYC ACKER AWARDS CREATOR & PRODUCER CLAYTON PATTERSON This is our 6th successful year of the ACKER Awards. The meaning of ACKER in the NY ACKER Awards is taken from an archaic Dutch word meaning a noticeable movement in a stream. The stream is the mainstream and the noticeable movement is the avant grade. By documenting my community, on an almost daily base, I have come to understand that gentrification is much more than the changing face of real estate and forced population migrations. The influence of gen- trification can be seen in where we live and work, how we shop, bank, communicate, travel, law enforcement, doctor visits, etc. We will look back and realize that the impact of gentrification on our society is as powerful a force as the industrial revolution was. I witness the demise and obliteration of just about all of the recogniz- able parts of my community, including so much of our history. I be- lieve if we do not save our own history, then who will. The NY ACKERS are one part of a much larger vision and ambition. A vision and ambition that is not about me but it is about community. Our community. Our history. The history of the Individuals, the Outsid- ers, the Outlaws, the Misfits, the Radicals, the Visionaries, the Dream- ers, the contributors, those who provided spaces and venues which allowed creativity to flourish, wrote about, talked about, inspired, mentored the creative spirit, and those who gave much, but have not been, for whatever reason, recognized by the mainstream.

  • Method to Our Madness As a New Beginning for Method to Our Madness Let Me Down Hard
The last few years have been busy ones for Frankenstein 3000. After promoting their third full-length release, the well-received Where Do We Go From Here, for the good part of 2009, culminating with the band headlining the Love & Rockets Tribute CD Release Party, they spent a few months working on their second covers album and things did not slow down in 2010. Early in the year Frankenstein 3000 unleashed They’ll Be Waking Up Soon to more positive reviews; they served as the back-up band for legendary Dead Boys guitarist Cheetah Chrome as well as ex-Bongos leader Richard Barone; they put their unique stamp on songs by Queen, Devo, The Cars and Alice Cooper for a tributes on Main Man Records; they played numerous shows with David Johansen, recent Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Dennis Dunaway, The Batusis, Steve Conte & The Crazy Truth, Skid Row, Blue Coupe and a highly successful benefit show headlined by members of Bon Jovi; and front-man Keith Roth landed the lead role in an independent film, Let Me Down Hard. Throughout it all Frankenstein 3000 still found the time to record their strongest collection of songs yet. Method To Our Madness features 16 tracks, some of which have been revisited from earlier releases. Long-time fans may recognize titles like “Going Away”, “Everybody Else” and “Panic In Needle Park”, but the band feels that this is the first time these songs are being properly represented. “We decided to polish up some old gems, quite a few we had played live for a long time but never released” says guitarist/vocalist Keith Roth.

  • Jews, Punk and the Holocaust: from the Velvet Underground to the Ramones – the Jewish-American Story
Popular Music (2005) Volume 24/1. Copyright © 2005 Cambridge University Press, pp. 79–105 DOI:10.1017/S0261143004000315 Printed in the United Kingdom Jews, punk and the Holocaust: from the Velvet Underground to the Ramones – the Jewish-American story JON STRATTON Abstract Punk is usually thought of as a radical reaction to local circumstances. This article argues that, while this may be the case, punk’s celebration of nihilism should also be understood as an expression of the acknowledgement of the cultural trauma that was, in the late 1970s, becoming known as the Holocaust. This article identifies the disproportionate number of Jews who helped in the development of the American punk phenomenon through the late 1960s and 1970s. However, the effects of the impact of the cultural trauma of the Holocaust were not confined to Jews. The shock that apparently civilised Europeans could engage in genocidal acts against groups of people wholly or partially thought of by most Europeans as European undermined the certainties of post-Enlightenment modernity and contributed fundamentally to the sense of unsettlement of morals and ethics which characterises the experience of postmodernity. Punk marks a critical cultural moment in that transformation. In this article the focus is on punk in the United States. We’re the members of the Master Race We don’t judge you by your face First we check to see what you eat Then we bend down and smell your feet (Adny Shernoff, ‘Master Race Rock’, from The Dictators’ The Dictators Go Girl Crazy! [1975]) It is conventional to distinguish between punk in the United States and punk in England; to suggest, perhaps, that American punk was more nihilistic and English punk more anarchistic.

  • Glam Rock by Barney Hoskyns 1
Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.
