Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

    1 THE NYC ACKER AWARDS CREATOR & PRODUCER CLAYTON PATTERSON This is our 6th successful year of the ACKER Awards. The meaning of ACKER in the NY ACKER Awards is taken from an archaic Dutch word meaning a noticeable movement in a stream. The stream is the mainstream and the noticeable movement is the avant grade. By documenting my community, on an almost daily base, I have come to understand that gentrification is much more than the changing face of real estate and forced population migrations. The influence of gen- trification can be seen in where we live and work, how we shop, bank, communicate, travel, law enforcement, doctor visits, etc. We will look back and realize that the impact of gentrification on our society is as powerful a force as the industrial revolution was. I witness the demise and obliteration of just about all of the recogniz- able parts of my community, including so much of our history. I be- lieve if we do not save our own history, then who will. The NY ACKERS are one part of a much larger vision and ambition. A vision and ambition that is not about me but it is about community. Our community. Our history. The history of the Individuals, the Outsid- ers, the Outlaws, the Misfits, the Radicals, the Visionaries, the Dream- ers, the contributors, those who provided spaces and venues which allowed creativity to flourish, wrote about, talked about, inspired, mentored the creative spirit, and those who gave much, but have not been, for whatever reason, recognized by the mainstream.

Adam formed the cover band TYRANT with singer GEOFF TATE who later formed QUEENSRŸCHE . First the band was called Spectrum and they 1979 played Judas Priest, UFO or Rush songs. Normally, they had gigs at High Schools. After a ‘battle of bands’ the band broke up. One of the first gigs Adam met EDWARD VAN HALEN in a hotel in Tacoma Washington. He asked Eddie to sign his guitar and wound up getting a three hour guitar lesson. Those three hours changed his life forever. Later he joined the band TKO from Seattle. Adam co-wrote 1980 most of the new material of the band and recorded the album IN YOUR FACE . But TKO couldn’t get a record deal. The album was too heavy for the current music market, Disco was still the main thing. Without a deal, Adam eventually left and was re- placed. TKO ended up with a record deal releasing In Your Face on Combat Records in 1984. Reissue 2008 with Adam on back cover Adam was asked to audition for KISS . Ace Frehley, the original guitar player, left the band before.

    SCHPAYBO 'LONG WAY BACK' (INDEPENDENT) Schpaybo are a hard rock outfit from the US fronted by talented multi-musician Steve Spirko. The material of Schpaybo rocks in a kind of southern boogie way a’la AC/DC and Aerosmith mixed with the melodic hard rock of Nightranger This makes for an interesting release as the songs here are often catchy and singable, like track three, ’Won’t You Be My Girl’ which is so goddamn infectious it’s silly. Vocally Steve sounds across between Stephen Tyler and Nightanger’s Jack Blade’s, thus ’Won’t You Be My Girl’ comes across in the similar vein and is my favourite track of the whole album, hard to ignore and very catchy, ‘Won’t You Be My Girl’ is well classy. Other good songs are track two ‘For Barbara’s Love’, this song like ‘Won’t You Be My Girl’ is very catchy and similar in style to Motley Crue, Nightranger and Michael Monroe, and has a sleazy edge to it. Also check out the ballad ‘Fall In Love Eyes’ which reminds me of Molly Hatchet. ‘Stress’ is a weaker song with a silly chorus that doesn’t hold up against the likes of ‘Won’t You Be My Girl’, and ‘Out Of Time’ is another song with that classic rock vibe a’la Aerosmith and Ted Nugent. At the end of the album there is a hidden instrumental piece that is pretty good, which is in the style of Ted Nugent and Slash. Overall Schypaybo definitely have potential and most of the songs are fun and catchy but fail to top the class of ‘Won’t You By My Girl’ a song that I will be playing to death for the rest of the year.

    Biography: HARDCO RE SUPERSTAR ­­ The History Many bands play it safe – HARDCORE SUPERSTAR doesn’t. The Swedish four piece had the balls to marry two styles that grew up hating each other. We’re talking about Thrash Metal and Sleaze Rock. The former hard, aggressive and ugly, the latter catchy, melodic and decadent. So what should they name this bastard child ? --We play ‘Street Metal’ offers drummer Magnus ”Adde” Andreasson. Thrash and sleaze both come from the gutter. They wear big sneakers, they are a bit stupid and they both read pulp fiction. I can’t believe that nobody brought them together before. Early days HARDCORE SUPERSTAR did just that with the band’s fourth and eponymous album, released in 2005. But the quartet didn’t arrive overnight, rather paying its dues during a rocky but rewarding ride. The roots can be traced back to the late eighties, when Adde was talked into playing the drums by older friend and neighbour Jocke Berg. --I played the guitar and we tried our best with songs such as ‘Paranoid’ and King Diamond’s ‘Shrine’, Jocke remembers. The young teenagers, hailing from a small town just outside of Gothenburg, ended up in different bands, who in turn chose different routes from their Iron Maiden inspired beginnings. Adde opted for heavier stuff in Dorian Gray whereas the Jocke fronted Glamoury Foxx went in a glammier direction. Incidentally, Jocke took up singing thanks to one Thomas Silver, fellow guitar slinger in Glamoury Foxx. Eventually Jocke and Adde ended up together again, this time in ‘Link’, a classic rock oriented outfit with grunge leanings.
