At the 1 hour mark, at room temperature check it and if it looks like the edges are getting too brown, turn the __1 Cup of Molasses temperature down to 325 degrees for the remaining baking time. __1-1/2 cups of Brown Sugar __1/2 cup of Granulated Sugar 5) Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 20 minutes, then invert __4 Eggs onto a rack over top of a baking sheet and allow to cool completely. -

Gingerbread House Making a gingerbread house can be a fun adventure for the whole family. With precise measurement and even baking, the pieces should come out perfect for assembling the gingerbread house. Yield: 1 house Ingredients: Gingerbread • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature • ½ cup dark brown sugar • ¼ cup light molasses • 1 tablespoon cinnamon • 1 ½ teaspoon ground cloves • 1 tablespoon ground ginger • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 tablespoons water Royal Icing • 1 pound powdered sugar, sifted if lumpy • 1 to 2 egg whites • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or lemon juice For assemblage and decoration • Royal icing • Gumdrops, licorice and peppermint, as desired Instructions: 1. In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter, brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon, ginger, clove and baking soda together until the mixture is smooth. Blend in the flour and water to make a stiff dough. Chill at least 30 minutes or until firm. 2. Preheat Wolf M-series, E-series or Dual Fuel oven to 350 degrees Convection bake. 3. Pfeffernusse Is A Cookie. A Variant Of German Lebkuchen, Or Gingerbread December 23rd is reserved for this German spice cookie. It is National Pfeffernusse Day. Very popular around the holidays, pfeffernusse are fluffy cookies made with ground nuts and spices and covered in powdered sugar. The exact origin in unknown however the Dutch believe that pfeffernusse (or pepernoten) are linked to the feast of Sinterklaas, which is celebrated on December 5 in the Netherlands and December 6 in Germany and Belgium. This holiday is when children receive gifts from St. Nicholas, who is partially the inspiration for the Santa Claus tradition. Pfeffernusse is a variant of German Lebkuchen, or gingerbread. Pferffernusse cookies differ from regular German gingerbread is that they are rolled into balls and then glazed with powdered sugar after baking. Pferffernusse literally means “pepper”. A traditional Pfeffernusse cookie will be too hard to eat without dipping in liquid for the first few days. The cookies do soften with age and more modern recipe adaptations have been made to make them soft from the start. If you were curious, the pronunciation is: [FEHF-fuhr-noos]. Though recipes differ, all contain cinnamon, cloves, mace, nutmeg, cardamom, and anise. Some variations include powdered sugar. Molasses and honey are used to sweeten the cookies. In Germany, the pfeffernüsse is more closely associated with Christmas. The biscuit has been part of European yuletide celebrations since the 1850s. ‘Pfeffernüsse’ are also known as ‘peppernødders’, ‘pfeffernusse’, ‘peppernuts’ and ‘pebernødder’. Pfeffernüsse are typically ginger-coloured, with a snowy white coating, and home made cookies are best left to develop their flavours and soften for a few days before being eaten. -

The Linköping Mitre Ecclesiastical Textiles and Episcopal Identity
CHAPTER 9 THE LINKÖPING MITRE ECCLESIASTICAL TEXTILES AND EPISCOPAL IDENTITY Ingrid Lunnan Nødseth Questions of agency have been widely discussed in art history studies in recent decades, with scholars such as Alfred Gell and W. T. Mitchell arguing that works of art possess the qualities or powers of living beings. Recent scholar ship has questioned whether Max Weber’s notion of charisma as a personal quality can be extended to the realm of things such as charismatic objects or charismatic art. Textiles are particularly interesting in this regard, as clothing transforms and extends the corporal body acting as a ‘social skin’, this prob lematizes the human/object divide. As such, ecclesiastical dress could be con sidered part of the priest’s social body, his identity. The mitre was especially symbolic and powerful as it distinguished the bishop from the lower ranks of the clergy. This article examines the richly decorated Linköping mitre, also known as Kettil Karlsson’s mitre as it was most likely made for this young and ambitious bishop in the 1460s. I argue that the aesthetics and rhetoric of the Linköping mitre created charismatic effects that could have contributed to the charisma of Kettil Karlsson as a religious and political leader. This argument, however, centers not so much on charismatic objects as on the relationship between personal charisma and cultural objects closely identified with char ismatic authority. The history of baking with ginger and spices goes back to ancient Egypt and Rome. Gingerbread is thought to first have been brought to Europe in 992 by an Armenian monk. He moved to France and taught the French Christians how to make gingerbread. Returning crusaders also spread the spicy treat across Europe. Gingerbread soon became associated with religious culinary traditions as often it was monks and priests who prepared it. By the 1600s, Nuremberg, Germany was recognized as the “Gingerbread Capital of the World” when the guild used master bakers and skilled workers to create elaborate works of art from gingerbread. By the 17th century only professional bakers could make gingerbread except at Christmas and Easter, when anyone could make it. -
