    PASQUALINA MONGILLO * Maria Bakunin, una ‘signora’ nella storia della chimica moderna Maria Bakunin, the ‘lady’ of modern chemistry Summary – Maria Bakunin (‘Marussia’ for friends, ‘the Lady’ for all others) was born on February 2, 1873, in Krasnojarsk, an important Siberian city, as testified by her baptism certificate found in the parish church of Saint Mary Arona in Berna. Valiant and warm-hearted scientist, she was the third child, after Carlo and Sofia, of the well-known revolutionary and philosopher Michail Bakunin. Her mother Antossia Kwia- towoska was the daughter of Zaverio, a Pole political deported. The marriage between Maria’s parents was labeled as “nihilistic”, because of the considerable age difference between the spouses and because of Michail’s stray life-style. In fact he was an anarchist activist, and he was committed in fostering revolutions all over the world. In the novel Il Diavolo al Pontelungo (Pontelungo’s Devil) written by Riccardo Bacchelli, most of the story is set nearby the public phalanstère of the Baronage in Locarno, a property offered by Michail’s companion Carlo Cafiero. Here in the novel, we have knowledge of Maria’s mother, Antossia (they both were named with a term of endearment Antossia and Marussia), from the direct evidence given by the last survivor of the Bolognese plots. In this novel , for a moment, Marussia appears on her mother’s lap “…”. When Michail, after few years, now old and tatty, died in Berna, his family was compelled to find a new accommodation. Antossia chose to live in Naples together with Carlo Gambuzzi. Naples was in fact Michail’s favourite city because that was, in his opinion, the best place to realise his anarchic ideals.

CARLO SBORDONE Il 28 marzo 2020 è venuto a mancare a Pisa Edoardo Vesentini, una delle fi- gure più eminenti della Matematica Italiana dagli anni Sessanta. Nato a Roma il 31 maggio 1928, si laureò all’Università di Milano nel 1960. Cominciò la carriera scientifica come borsista dell’Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica per l’a.a. 1951- 52 con F. Severi e B. Segre. Di tale Istituto sarebbe diventato illuminato Presidente per due mandati dal 1978 al 1986. Libero docente in Geometria nel 1956 fu Lec- turer nella Northwestern University (Illinois) nell’A.A 1957-58 e poi all’Institute for Advanced Studies di Princeton dal settembre 1958 al dicembre 1959. Ebbe la cattedra di Geometria all’Università di Pisa nel 1959 per poi passare alla Scuola Normale Superiore nel 1967. Dal 1971 al 1980 è stato Professore all’Università del Maryland (college Park). Dal 1966 al 1974 ha fatto parte dell’Executive Committee dell’International Mathematical Union (IMU). Direttore della Scuola Normale Superiore dal 1978 al 1987, passò dal 1996 alla cattedra di Analisi Matematica al Politecnico di Torino. Gli furono attribuiti diversi premi scientifici: nel 1956 il premio Pomini dell’U- nione Matematica Italiana, nel 1958 il premio Bonavera dell’Accademia delle Scienze di Torino, ex aequo con Emilio Gagliardo, il premio Caccioppoli dell’UMI nel 1962, ed il premio Feltrinelli dell’Accademia dei Lincei nel 1981.
