Ph.D. August 2004. Telecommunications Managing the Content of Malaysian Television Drama: Producers, Gatekeepers and the Barisan Nasional Government (303 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Drew McDaniel Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to describe and analyze how drama television content is managed in Malaysia. By looking at the production process of local drama television programming, this study examines the interactions among the three major players – the Barisan Nasional regime, the major television networks and independent producers – who are responsible for shaping its content. Three research methods are used for this study: in-depth interviewing, the informal conversational interview and documentary research. Between June 2001 and November 2002, 32 interviewees participated in this research. The research finds that the Malaysian drama television producer’s ability to generate program content is constrained by the Barisan Nasional regime. Three observations are made to outline the power relationship between the government and the television industry. First, the government often encourages television producers to make drama programs with the theme of friendship and goodwill (muhibah) among different ethnic communities in order to nurture racial harmony.

This thesis is inspired by the idea proposed by Christine Gledhill (1988) that at the core of cultural negotiation in melodrama is gender representation which is the cultural product resulting from the linking of textual and social subjects.

Nanyang Technological University Library 1 MALAYSIAN FILMS: SURVIVAL OR REVIVAL 2 By: Mohd.-Hamdan Hj . Adnan- 1. OVERVIEW The Malaysian -film industry is slightly over hal-f a century old. Fierce competition from imported films, greater usage of video and good programmes from the three television channels in Malaysia has affected the development of the movie industry. In fact the three sectors of the industry, i.e. production, distribution and screening are all experiencing hard times. Currently, Malaysian films at best are surviving. Various efforts both by the Government and the film industries, however, do show some hope for a revival though it might not be to the extent of its golden years in the 1958s and early 1960s. Malaysian films are also experiencing an identity crisis. This happened because Malaysian films are basically synonymous to Malay films, whereas the country is multi-ethnic with Malays comprising slightly less than 50 per cent of her 16 million population.

  • From Heartbroken Wives to Working Mothers: the Malay Melodrama of the Early 1980S
From Heartbroken Wives to Working Mothers: The Malay Melodrama of the Early 1980s Norman Yusojf This essay examines the Malay melodrama produced in the early 1980s by focusing upon the representation and (re)construction of gender and its extent to which the genre subverts its conventionality in relation to the gender subjectivity and relativity. Since cinematic texts, as forms of representation, are polysemic, my argument is that the depiction of women in the melodramas does not perpetuate them as "commodified" and stereotyped into the binary images of "good" and "bad" due to the films' renegotiation of the ambiguities of representation. On the other hand, the portrayal of men, which seems negative, resonates in ways that contest and question their masculinity. My analysis will go on to trace the social, economic and political implications in Malaysia during the early 1980s as the country was on the verge of modernization and how they reflect and shape the defining features of the Malay melodrama of the early 1980s. In a way, the essay aims to map and frame the notion of genres "as a form of collective cultural expression" (Schatz, 1981), by underlining the socio-cultural and ideological functions which the Malay melodrama of the early 1980s performs. As is known, melodrama is one of the few film genres which has been subject to critical derision and, employed in a pejorative sense, normally by critics, to imply domesticity, femininity, heightened emotionalism and sentimentality.1 By the same token, a smorgasbord of alternative names has been invented for the melodramatic films, found in the English- language reviews and publicities surrounding them; amongst the names are "women's pictures," "tearjerkers," "weepies," and "soap operas" (Singer, 1990).

Malaysia's Changing Media Environment and Youth Political Engagement—Student Voices from 2010 A dissertation presented to the faculty of the Scripps College of Communication of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Animesh S. Rathore April 2016 © 2016 Animesh S. Rathore. All Rights Reserved. This dissertation titled Malaysia's Changing Media Environment and Youth Political Engagement—Student Voices from 2010 by ANIMESH S. RATHORE has been approved for the School of Media Arts and Studies and the Scripps College of Communication by Drew O. McDaniel Professor of Media Arts and Studies Scott Titsworth Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii ABSTRACT RATHORE, ANIMESH S., Ph.D., April 2016, Mass Communication Malaysia's Changing Media Environment and Youth Political Engagement—Student Voices from 2010 Director of Dissertation: Drew O. McDaniel This dissertation explores the roles played by media toward political engagement and disengagement among students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), an affirmative action university in Malaysia, during 2010. In doing so, this study examined perceptions regarding Malaysian media and politics, and the roles played by both mainstream mass media and online media in fostering political engagement and disengagement among UiTM students. The ethnographic fieldwork for this study was conducted during 2010—a critical year in Malaysia’s political history, which preceded the repeal of the country’s controversial laws including the Internal Security Act University and the University Colleges Act (UUCA). Before its repeal in 2012, UUCA banned university students and academicians from joining political parties, which presented a key challenge in obtaining informant feedback during the fieldwork.
