McDaniel This dissertation explores the roles played by media toward political engagement and disengagement among students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), an affirmative action university in Malaysia, during 2010. In doing so, this study examined perceptions regarding Malaysian media and politics, and the roles played by both mainstream mass media and online media in fostering political engagement and disengagement among UiTM students. The ethnographic fieldwork for this study was conducted during 2010—a critical year in Malaysia’s political history, which preceded the repeal of the country’s controversial laws including the Internal Security Act University and the University Colleges Act (UUCA). Before its repeal in 2012, UUCA banned university students and academicians from joining political parties, which presented a key challenge in obtaining informant feedback during the fieldwork. The findings revealed a distrust of mainstream media among many of the informants, including the politically engaged and the disengaged, during 2010. The alternative media online had helped disseminate oppositional messages and had encouraged both engagement and disengagement. Moreover, social media, including Facebook and Twitter, had led to an unprecedented form of engagement between youth and political leaders and issues, which, in turn, had led to enhanced interactions—thereby increasing student involvement in the country’s political discourse. While both iii government controlled media and alternative media online had resulted in multiple political discourses, the overall environment for youth political engagement and disengagement was shaped by multiple factors, including parental influence, peer influence, role models, and establishment, along with media. Moreover, issues such as continued corruption in the country had contributed further to a distrust of mainstream media and political leaders, and had, thereby, contributed to the growing political disengagement among many UiTM students. The students’ reactions were later justified in government actions to resist a change in the country’s political leadership.     1 HISTORYOF COMMUNICATION IN MALAYSIA (1940-2008) Sevia Mahdaliza Khairil Amree Zainol 1.1 INTRODUCTION The Second World War was, in some ways, one of the lowest points in Malaysia's history. Japanese forces landed on the north- east border of Malaya on 8 December 194 1 and, in one month, succeeded in establishing their control of both Peninsula Malaya and Sabah and Sarawak. On 15 March 1942, Singapore surrendered. Singapore was renamed Shonan and became the centre of a regional administrative headquarters that incorporated the Straits Settlements, and the Federated Malay States and Sumatra. Much like the British who had installed residents in the Malay ruling houses fifty years earlier, the Japanese appointed local governors to each state. The only difference was that this time, it was the Sultans who were placed in the positions of advisors. The Unfederated Malay States, Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu found themselves back under the sovereignty of Thailand in 1942, when Thailand declared war on Britain and the USA. Most large scale economic activities grounded to a halt during the period of the War. The production of tin which was already falling before the War stopped almost completely. People turned their occupation away from the cultivation of commercial crops, concentrating instead on planting rice and vegetables to ensure they did not go hungry. However, the application of PV systems in Malaysia is still low. The objective of this research is to determine the total cost, price/kWp system, net present value (NPV), and payback period for PV project in Malaysia. All seven projects were selected and used for the analysis and named as Project 1 to 7. The findings from this research indicate that all seven projects show a negative NPV value and payback period is more than thirty eight years. Four projects even get payback period of more than fifty years. However, an interesting projection on the price reduction shows that a positive NPV is achievable if the price/kWp system reduced to RM11,000 and RM4,000 for government subsidized and non- subsidized projects respectively. The estimation on payback period is between four to eight years with the price reduction of 85% to 50% respectively from the current market price. Global warming, climate change, environment pollution and demand for energy represent critically issues with a wide array of potential environmental disasters affecting people health and safety.

While some minorities live in authoritarian regimes, others live in countries with religious rights institutionalized in national constitutions and international human rights treaties. Despite these guarantees, minorities face restrictions on religion through laws and regulations that restrict what religion they choose and limit how they practice their faith. Thus minorities that in theory are supposed to have religious freedom also encounter religious freedom restrictions in practice. Through my analysis of Christian minorities in Malaysia and India, I discover what some of these blockages are and how minorities and their transnational partners have negotiated with the state in recent legal challenges to Christians’ rights. I focus on the agency and strategies of minorities by listening to their opinions, arguments, and reasoning, as articulated through interviews, legal documents, and an original survey. In doing so, this study differs from recent scholarship that traces the structure and organization of TANs. I find that how Christian minorities use transnational advocacy networks is dependent on the political opportunities that are available to them domestically.

Introduction Affected and restricted by many factors like government policy, language characteristics and the awareness of inheriting ethnic cultures, language communication under multilingual and multicultural background is always unique. Due to the large number of Chinese and overseas Chinese, Chinese language has become an important ethnic language in Southeast Asia, but its communication is affected by multi-languages and multi-cultures of the country, which has given it uniqueness. In addition to Singapore, Malaysia has the world’s largest percentage of Chinese ethnic group and keeps a relatively complete system of Chinese education. Analysis of communication rules of Chinese language under the multiethnic and multicultural background of Malaysia is a special reference for exploring communication of Chinese language in multilingual environment.
