DASHBOARD THE BORNEO ECO FILM FESTIVAL is a non-profit programme celebrating Borneo’s biocultural diversity through showcasing ecological films and nurturing local community filmmaking. Admission to all of our activities and events is free. BEFF 2015 showcased: Environmental Cinema and Suara Publika, which are public programmes; and Suara Community FilmmaKing in which we are worKing with 15 community filmmaKing teams from throughout Sabah. ENVIRONMENTAL CINEMA is a weekenD- long festival featuring exclusive local anD international films. BEFF 2015 showcaseD: 17 films: 6 features, 9 shorts, 2 historical films 7 Asian Premieres 2 SE Asian Premieres BEFF is expanDing the iDea of environmental cinema from the traDitional to the experimental, encompassing thoughtful narrative and artful expression in an exploration of our relationship with nature. is a SUARA PUBLIKA series of public talks anD interactive seminars presenteD over the festival weekenD, featuring environmental scientists, inDigenous representatives, storytellers anD filmmakers. BEFF 2015 featureD international film expert Mr. BirD Runningwater of the SunDance Institute USA, anD helD: 5 public talks + 3 interactive seminars 2 GOALS 'Educate' through new Knowledge on ecological and cultural issues 'Expose' through environmental films that stimulate discussion 'Engage' storytellers through a platform for community filmmaKing “Suara” is the Malay word for Voice. Everyone shoulD have the opportunity to tell their stories in their own worDs anD images. SUARA COMMUNITY FILMMAKING is a tailor-maDe training programme for aspiring inDigenous anD local community filmmakers in Sabah. Through thematic anD intensive workshops helmeD by leaDing professionals in the Malaysian film inDustry, Suara community filmmakers learn to harness the power of images anD sounD to tell the stories about their communities and the environments arounD them. In 2015, the Suara programme haD: 3 thematic workshops held in Tongod, Semporna & Kinabatangan Final intensive workshop held in Kota Kinabalu Trained 62 community filmmakers Premiered 6 community-made films at BEFF 2015. BEFF is powereD by a team of vibrant professionals who have founD success in a range of fielDs, from environmental conservation, tourism, business anD the creative inDustries of film, writing anD media. Driven by passion – anD often through sheer grit anD Determination – the team raises funDs, nurtures the network of partnerships, runs the programming anD makes it all happen. Why? Because BEFF understands that it is important to deliver a message that empowers people to step up and take action for our shareD future. The BEFF 2015 festival was held over the weekend of FriDay the 2nd to SunDay the 4th of October at the Kompleks JKKN (Sabah) in Kota Kinabalu. All of BEFF’s year-long activities culminateD in a three-day celebration of our shareD natural anD cultural heritage. The 2015 festival weekenD featureD the Environmental Cinema and Suara Publika programmes, as well as the final Suara Community Filmmaking workshop. Prior to the festival weekenD, the Suara Community Filmmaking programme had completed three thematic workshops held over March to August in various rural locations throughout Sabah. Of these, 7 films were shown for the first time in Asia while another 2 films were Southeast Asian Premieres. The historical films incluDeD a live film performance by Kelabit musician Hezekiah Asim who composeD an original score to accompany “North Borneo Circa 1950” anD was presented as the opening act to the festival weekend. 5 Each evening, a host of presenters - from leaDing scientists, nature-lovers, environmental activists to inDigenous representatives - took to the stage to introDuce a film. Presenters talkeD about how the stories anD issues in each film relate to the lives of ordinary Sabahans, and shared a passionate wake-up call to safeguard Sabah’s natural bounty anD rich cultural heritage.
