If you only read one book this year - make it this one!By OmarIn his introduction the author describes this book as 'a small hymn to the Thousand and One Nights'. I would prefer to describe it as a great anthem of the story teller's art. From the beautiful cover to the final word this book is a delight. Like the nested Russian matryoshka dolls which so fascinated me as a child this is a series of tales within tales within tales.....I would no doubt bore the reader if I was to apply the superlatives I feel it deserves. This a book which, like a deep sea pearl diver I will return to again and again, searching for its hidden treasure. The Shah family, like a special vineyard, produces the finest wine generation after generation and Tahir Shah's storytelling is no exception. We owe a great debt to him and his family for continuing that great Human endowment enshrined in the medium of a tale. Each story is just so enjoyable in so many ways. In the title story 'Scorpion Soup' Shah's description of a group of witches makes Macbeth's look like a ladies knitting circle! Each story has a unique and original 'feel' to it and yet at the same time imparts the timeless components of all great tales....I will re-read this book many times!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The fold-out maps in this book are spectacular.By Gene BlackI was initially drawn to this book because I had read in an interview that Tahir mentioned that it was very much in the spirit of his grandfather, Ikbal Ali Shah. The stories in this book are, in keeping with that spirit, rather good, old-fashioned fairy tales. Rather than the thrust-to-the-heart works of Tahir's father, Idries Shah. But I imagine Scorpion Soup probably takes several readings to chomp one's way through the shell to get to the meat of the matter. My favorites of Tahir's books remain, at this point at least, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," which ends with a disappearing act to end all disappearing acts, and "In Arabian Nights."5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I have just finished reading Scorpion Soup: A story within a story. Contained within it is nothing less than the wisdom of all men.... Inspired by a book his grandfather wrote eighty years ago, master storyteller and author Tahir Shah set about creating SCORPION SOUP, an intense experience of interlinked and overlapping tales. Having been raised on stories from both East and West, Shah believes that tales work on numerous levels, subtly influencing the way we see the world, and the way we learn from it. Magical instruments, and secret machineries in their own right, stories are within us all. And, the way we appreciate them, from the cradle is, Shah believes, part of the default setting of Mankind. Introduced in early childhood to the wonders of A Thousand and One Nights, Shah learned to receive and appreciate complex structures and storytelling devices. These have been used throughout history to pass on ideas, cultural values and information, as well as, of course, to entertain. Having been inspired by The Nights, especially in the way that one story leads into another, and yet another, Shah used this technique (known as the frame story) in SCORPION SOUP. An interwoven and intoxicating collection of tales, the book descends down through many layers, as one story progresses into the next, and eventually brings us back to the first. There is the tale of the Capilongo, a sophisticated bird-like creature that lives in the jungle with sloth-servants, who invites his would-be assassin to dine before allowing himself to be killed. And there is the tale of the Clockmaker who harnesses the soul of a Jinn, in the guise of a hoopoe, and uses it to travel back in time to the realm of Harun Al-Rachid. There is the cautionary tale, too, of the Man Whose Arms Grew Branches, and the story of the Fish s Dream. Unlike anything that has been published in the Occidental world before, SCORPION SOUP is a rich and diverse feast for the senses, and a book that instructs as much as it does entertain. Stories within stories: A review of Tahir Shah s Scorpion Soup ed in this essay: Scorpion Soup, by Tahir Shah. Secretum Mundi Publishing, 2013. Fast on the heels of his eerily timed epic, Timbuctoo, travel writer Tahir Shah delivers a fantastical new work of fiction drawn from the deepest wellsprings of human imagination. Scorpion Soup is a collection of stories-within-stories inspired by the Arabic masterpiece One Thousand and One Nights. The book employs a literary device known as the frame story in which one tale is recounted within another, resulting in a multi- dimensional narrative of never-ending twists and turns. Shah, an Anglo-Afghan author living in Morocco, hails from a family steeped in an ancient tradition of eastern storytelling. In Scorpion Soup he resurrects the ancient literary device of his forebears, reminding us in the introduction that tales are a kind of magical machinery that can alter states of mind and change the way we think. The book begins in a Barbary slave camp in the North African town of Oran a setting taken straight out of Shah s previous work. A Levantine sailor, captured by pirates and marched through the desert, finds himself chained to a wall with other brutalized captives awaiting ransom or death. Beaten and starved, the prisoner finds solace in a tale told to him in a faint whisper by the man lying beside him. So begins the mesmerizing flight through the interwoven worlds that form the backdrop to Shah s tales. The author upends reality by shuffling its components, reworking its very DNA, to the tune of new possibilities. The reader is led into engrossing realms featuring Da Vinci-esque machines, talking animals, doorways leading into parallel dimensions and grotesque, monstrous djinn that may be some of the most frightening in all of literature. In this strange multi-verse, time and space cease their simplistic, predictable trajectories. The reader is awash in an entirely new experience. Though distant and alien, Scorpion Soup s worlds are somehow reminiscent of our own. The all-too-familiar scent of human folly can be discerned wafting above the narrative s steaming broth. In The Singing Snakes, a cat in search of its destiny visits the land of dogs, whose friendly denizens are possessed by an irrational fear of singing snakes animals which they've never seen; in The Man Whose Arms Grew Branches, an Icelandic woodcutter, ignoring a dire warning from a bird, continues to wantonly chop down trees until he is transformed into a giant oak; while in The Most Foolish of Men an imbecile king holds a stupidity contest which is won by a clever vagabond named Yousef, whose winning display of behaviour is to hold a mirror to the king s face. In the same way Yousef mocks the King, Shah s tales seem to reveal much about ourselves. And there is reason for this. Though tipping its hat to the Arabian Nights, Scorpion Soup is also an ode to a wider tradition. For over a millennium, savants in the Middle East and Central Asia (and their predecessors in other cultures) have used stories to transmit patterns of knowledge to individuals and cultures. Tradition asserts that, beyond serving an entertainment function, many such tales are in fact a refined form of technology, encapsulating elements designed to develop the mind of the reader, or listener. For this reason, the title of Shah s book taken from one of its tales is not impertinent. Readers used to straightforward narratives, clean endings, and simplistic morals will feel the sting of Scorpion Soup s unusual structure. The book follows no conventions other than its own. Such discomfort, Shah might argue, is merely one of the more obvious impacts of the stories on the reader.   • Understanding Sufism
    Abstract This thesis addresses the problem of how to interpret Islamic writers without imposing generic frameworks of later and partly Western derivation. It questions the overuse of the category “Sufism” which has sometimes been deployed to read anachronistic concerns into Islamic writers. It does so by a detailed study of some of the key works of the 13th century writer Ibn ‘Ata’ Allah (d. 709/1309). In this way it fills a gap in the learned literature in two ways. Firstly, it examines the legitimacy of prevalent conceptualisations of the category “Sufism.” Secondly, it examines the work of one Sufi thinker, and asks in what ways, if any, Western categories may tend to distort its Islamic characteristics. The methodology of the thesis is primarily exegetical, although significant attention is also paid to issues of context. The thesis is divided into two parts. Part One sets up the problem of Sufism as an organizational category in the literature. In doing so, this part introduces the works of Ibn ‘Ata’ Allah, and justifies the selection from his works for the case study in Part Two. Part Two provides a detailed case study of the works of Ibn ‘Ata’ Allah. It opens with some of the key issues involved in understanding an Islamic thinker, and gives a brief overview of Ibn ‘Ata’ Allah’s life. This is followed by an examination of materials on topics such as metaphysics, ontology, epistemology, eschatology, ethics, and soteriology. In each case it is suggested that these topics may be misleading unless care is taken not to import Western conceptuality where it is not justified by the texts.

    HYBRIDIDENTITY FORMATIONS IN MUSLIMAMERICA Hybrid Identity Formations in Muslim America: The Case of American Sufi Movements’ Marcia Hermansen Loyola University Chicago, Illinois he minimal attention given to Sufi movements in much previous scholarship on Muslims in America’ is indicative of the assumption T that these movements were marginal to the concerns of most Muslims living in the United States and insignificant in terms of their impact on American culture and institution^.^ At the same time, organizations and publications sponsored by the American Muslim community have largely ignored S~fism.~One academic study called Sufis “the hidden Muslims” of America since they had been largely overlooked by the few sociological studies of American Muslim communities, and because, in many cases, adherents do not attend mosques or belong to mainstream Islamic organi- zations .5 The following study contends that these movements are worthy of attention and that their impact in terms of both the Muslim community and American culture is significant and increasing. The literary output of American Sufi movements is by now so vast that it would require a volume rather than an essay to adequately present the history and doctrines of each of the groups in detail. I therefore aim to provide an overview of major groups, their history and their activities. There is a range of movements that can be considered Sufi-oriented, or that have been influenced to various degrees by the tradition of Islamic mysticism. It is not within the scope of this paper to evaluate the authentici- ty of any movement or individual. However, if the standard for terming a movement “Sufi”were to mean the practice of Islamic law, not all of these movements would be included.

Among them is the master of the cosmos, that is, Muhammad, the Messenger of God— God bless him and give him peace!”1 – Ibn ‘Arabī hile the wide proliferation of Sufism (tasawwuf, W the inner dimension of Islam), has brought much needed attention to this rich spiritual tradition which plays a critical role in circumventing the phe- nomenon of Islamophobia in the West and extremism within the Muslim world itself, the downside is that Sufism has become another commodity for Western consumption. Sufism, like other traditional spiritualities, has not been able to easily deflect the waging insurgence of the New Age movement which introduced pseudo-Sufis2 who 1 William C.     Excerpt from Sufism and The Way of Blame By Yannis Toussoulis Ph.D. Chapter Five: The Earlier “Way of Blame.” J.G. Bennett was convinced that Gurdjieff’s greatest influence came from a group of proto- Naqshbandis in Central Asia; a brotherhood later verified by Hasan Shushud as the Khwajagan or “Masters”. As we have also seen, Idries Shah implied that his own perspective was influenced by the Khwajagan-Naqshbandiyya. Moreover, the father of Idries, Sardar Ikbal Ali Shah, was also known to have contacts among Afghan Sufis, some of whom (according to Darr) were still active members of the Khwajagan. Hasan Shushud, a rather enigmatic Sufi in Istanbul, had disguised his former affiliation with the Naqshbandiyya and with another group that referred to itself as the Nuriyya-Malamatiyya (in Turkish, Nuriyye-Melamiyye). As already noted, he had revealed that he had a rather low opinion of Gurdjieff as a “thief of the tradition.” It is hard to tell which tradition Shushud was referring to, although he probably meant the Khwajagan, or the malamatiyya, or both of them comingled together. A common element that tied together Gurdjieff, the Shah family, Bennett, and Shusud was that all of them referred to the Masters of Central Asia. All of them also posited that the Khwajagan had functioned as a rather elite group within greater Sufism; yet all of them, with the exception of Shushud, seem to have deviated from the central teachings of Sufism which emphasized the nothingness of Man next to God. Instead, the followers of Gurdjieff, Bennett, and Idries Shah would all continue to promote a form of occult elitism that emphasized a “hidden hierarchy” in Sufism.

SlDKY The Ohio State University,Columbus,Ohio Demographic and historical factors in Central Asia have produced an ethnic and cultural homogeneity, which overrides ecological diversity and artificial political boundaries imposed by nineteenth-century West­ ern imperialism (K rader 1963, 2). Ethnographically, Afghanistan belongs to the Central Asian region (Map 1 ),an area extending south­ ward from the Siberian forest belt to the Iranian plateau, and south­ eastward to the Pamir mountains of northern Afghanistan, the Tien Shan range, and the Hindu Kush. The last mountain range con­ stitutes the “ Great Divide ” between Central and South Asia (Fraser- T ytler 1950, 3).1 From west to east, Central Asia includes all the territory from the Caspian Sea to the Mongolian steppes, including the Altai mountains (K rader 1963, 1-4; O shanin 1964,1-2). The population of Afghanistan2 is overwhelmingly Muslim: 80% Sunni and 19% Shi’ite.3 But in Afghanistan, as elsewhere in Muslim Central Asia, Islam has had to come to terms with shamanistic ele­ ments derived from earlier beliefs and practices. In Central Asia, shamanism was once prevalent among the Turkic peoples, originally occupying the area of the Altai mountains. By the sixth century the Turks had invaded the Central Asian steppes, bring­ ing with them their shamanistic beliefs along with cults of ancestors, stones, mountains, and the earth goddess Otukan (K rader 1963, 131). Such beliefs seem to have been shared by the Uzbeks of the Oxus delta, and the Mongols and Turkmen (K rader 1963, 131; CAR 1959, 109- 110).
