If you only read one book this year - make it this one!By OmarIn his introduction the author describes this book as 'a small hymn to the Thousand and One Nights'. I would prefer to describe it as a great anthem of the story teller's art. From the beautiful cover to the final word this book is a delight. Like the nested Russian matryoshka dolls which so fascinated me as a child this is a series of tales within tales within tales.....I would no doubt bore the reader if I was to apply the superlatives I feel it deserves. This a book which, like a deep sea pearl diver I will return to again and again, searching for its hidden treasure. The Shah family, like a special vineyard, produces the finest wine generation after generation and Tahir Shah's storytelling is no exception. We owe a great debt to him and his family for continuing that great Human endowment enshrined in the medium of a tale. Each story is just so enjoyable in so many ways. In the title story 'Scorpion Soup' Shah's description of a group of witches makes Macbeth's look like a ladies knitting circle! Each story has a unique and original 'feel' to it and yet at the same time imparts the timeless components of all great tales....I will re-read this book many times!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The fold-out maps in this book are spectacular.By Gene BlackI was initially drawn to this book because I had read in an interview that Tahir mentioned that it was very much in the spirit of his grandfather, . The stories in this book are, in keeping with that spirit, rather good, old-fashioned fairy tales. Rather than the thrust-to-the-heart works of Tahir's father, . But I imagine Scorpion Soup probably takes several readings to chomp one's way through the shell to get to the meat of the matter. My favorites of Tahir's books remain, at this point at least, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," which ends with a disappearing act to end all disappearing acts, and "In Arabian Nights."5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I have just finished reading Scorpion Soup: A story within a story. Contained within it is nothing less than the wisdom of all men....

Inspired by a book his grandfather wrote eighty years ago, master storyteller and author Tahir Shah set about creating SCORPION SOUP, an intense experience of interlinked and overlapping tales. Having been raised on stories from both East and West, Shah believes that tales work on numerous levels, subtly influencing the way we see the world, and the way we learn from it. Magical instruments, and secret machineries in their own right, stories are within us all. And, the way we appreciate them, from the cradle is, Shah believes, part of the default setting of Mankind. Introduced in early childhood to the wonders of A Thousand and One Nights, Shah learned to receive and appreciate complex structures and storytelling devices. These have been used throughout history to pass on ideas, cultural values and information, as well as, of course, to entertain. Having been inspired by The Nights, especially in the way that one story leads into another, and yet another, Shah used this technique (known as the frame story) in SCORPION SOUP. An interwoven and intoxicating collection of tales, the book descends down through many layers, as one story progresses into the next, and eventually brings us back to the first. There is the tale of the Capilongo, a sophisticated bird-like creature that lives in the jungle with sloth-servants, who invites his would-be assassin to dine before allowing himself to be killed. And there is the tale of the Clockmaker who harnesses the soul of a Jinn, in the guise of a hoopoe, and uses it to travel back in time to the realm of Harun Al-Rachid. There is the cautionary tale, too, of the Man Whose Arms Grew Branches, and the story of the Fish s Dream. Unlike anything that has been published in the Occidental world before, SCORPION SOUP is a rich and diverse feast for the senses, and a book that instructs as much as it does entertain.

Fast on the heels of his eerily timed epic, Timbuctoo, travel writer Tahir Shah delivers a fantastical new work of fiction drawn from the deepest wellsprings of human imagination. Scorpion Soup is a collection of stories-within-stories inspired by the Arabic masterpiece One Thousand and One Nights. The book employs a literary device known as the frame story in which one tale is recounted within another, resulting in a multi- dimensional narrative of never-ending twists and turns. Shah, an Anglo-Afghan author living in , hails from a family steeped in an ancient tradition of eastern storytelling. In Scorpion Soup he resurrects the ancient literary device of his forebears, reminding us in the introduction that tales are a kind of magical machinery that can alter states of mind and change the way we think. The book begins in a Barbary slave camp in the North African town of Oran a setting taken straight out of Shah s previous work. A Levantine sailor, captured by pirates and marched through the desert, finds himself chained to a wall with other brutalized captives awaiting ransom or death. Beaten and starved, the prisoner finds solace in a tale told to him in a faint whisper by the man lying beside him. So begins the mesmerizing flight through the interwoven worlds that form the backdrop to Shah s tales. The author upends reality by shuffling its components, reworking its very DNA, to the tune of new possibilities. The reader is led into engrossing realms featuring Da Vinci-esque machines, talking animals, doorways leading into parallel dimensions and grotesque, monstrous djinn that may be some of the most frightening in all of literature. In this strange multi-verse, time and space cease their simplistic, predictable trajectories. The reader is awash in an entirely new experience. Though distant and alien, Scorpion Soup s worlds are somehow reminiscent of our own. The all-too-familiar scent of human folly can be discerned wafting above the narrative s steaming broth. In The Singing Snakes, a cat in search of its destiny visits the land of dogs, whose friendly denizens are possessed by an irrational fear of singing snakes animals which they've never seen; in The Man Whose Arms Grew Branches, an Icelandic woodcutter, ignoring a dire warning from a bird, continues to wantonly chop down trees until he is transformed into a giant oak; while in The Most Foolish of Men an imbecile king holds a stupidity contest which is won by a clever vagabond named Yousef, whose winning display of behaviour is to hold a mirror to the king s face. In the same way Yousef mocks the King, Shah s tales seem to reveal much about ourselves. And there is reason for this. Though tipping its hat to the Arabian Nights, Scorpion Soup is also an ode to a wider tradition. For over a millennium, savants in the Middle East and (and their predecessors in other cultures) have used stories to transmit patterns of knowledge to individuals and cultures. Tradition asserts that, beyond serving an entertainment function, many such tales are in fact a refined form of technology, encapsulating elements designed to develop the mind of the reader, or listener. For this reason, the title of Shah s book taken from one of its tales is not impertinent. Readers used to straightforward narratives, clean endings, and simplistic morals will feel the sting of Scorpion Soup s unusual structure. The book follows no conventions other than its own. Such discomfort, Shah might argue, is merely one of the more obvious impacts of the stories on the reader.
