Council on Faith Newsletter Sep 20
The Lord-Lieutenant's Council on Faith September Newsletter The mission of the Lieutenancy and its Council on Faith is to build bridges; connecting individuals, organisations and social networks. This will enhance Londoners’ sense of belonging and thus increase social inclusion within the capital. This newsletter records the activities of the Council on Faith members and the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, Sir Ken Olisa. Celebrating Local Faith and Community Work On Thursday 13th August, local community heroes were celebrated at Barking & Dagenham Faith Forum’s inaugural Faith & Community Awards. The local champions hailed from a range of different faiths, cultures and beliefs, and have used these to inspire positive change and progress in Barking and Dagenham. 19 projects and community groups were recognized across various categories. The event was hosted online and was enjoyed by 100 participants. Organisations and projects that were featured ranged from foodbanks to local mosques, gurdwaras and churches, to dance crews and arts and crafts groups. The local awards were made possible due to the support of the Council on Faith who is encouraging boroughs across London to hold their own awards event celebrating the successes of faith-based social action in their local area. It is hoped that this event, and similar schemes such as the Bexley Faith in Community Awards, will inspire others. Himanshu Jain, the Chair of Barking & Dagenham Faith Forum, said: “At such volatile and uncertain times, we believe it is more important than ever to shine a spotlight on, and celebrate, those who work to bring our community together. All of the groups and projects featured provide vital services that often do not receive the praise and recognition they deserve. -

Many international scholars; be them from the east and west, Muslims or non-Muslims; recognize Muslim scholarship in Religionswissenschaft (Religious Studies). In sum, comparative study of religions is regarded as one of the great contributions of Muslim’s civilization to mankind’s intellectual progress. Nevertheless, when referring to the popular works of Muslim scholars in this discipline, most people will refer to only some treatises with negligence to the great bulk of Muslim Heritage in Religionswissenschaft. -

Södertörn University | School of Historical and Contemporary Studies Bachelor thesis 15 hp | Religious studies | Fall 2014 The program of Journalism target religious studies “Fight is an inside path” – A minor field study of how members of Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order perceive religious freedom in Mexico By: Sandra Forsvik Supervisor in Sweden: Simon Sorgenfrei Supervisor in Mexico: Israel Rojas Cámara Abstract The interests for academic studies of contemporary Sufism and Sufism in non-Islamic countries have become more popular, but little has been done in Latin America. The studies of Islam in this continent are limited and studies on Sufism in Mexico seem to be an unexplored area. As a student of journalism target religion I see this as an important topic that can generate new information for the study of Sufism. This thesis is therefore aimed to describe the group of Sufis I have chosen to study, Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order in Mexico, linked to Human Rights in form of how members of the Sufi order perceive Religious Freedom in Mexico. A minor field study was carried out in Colonia Roma, Mexico City during October and November 2014. The place was chosen because this is the place where Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order exists in Mexico. The investigation is qualitative and based on an ethnographic study of eight weeks and semi structured interviews with three dervishes of the Sufi order, where two of them are men and one is a woman. Based on my purpose I have formulated the following questions: – How do members of Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi -
Title: Women of Agency: the Penned Thoughts of Bengali Muslim
Title: Women of Agency: The Penned Thoughts of Bengali Muslim Women Writers of 9th 20th the Late 1 and Early Century Submitted by: Irteza Binte-Farid In Fulfillment of the Feminist Studies Honors Program Date: June 3, 2013 introduction: With the prolusion of postcolornal literature and theory arising since the 1 9$Os. unearthing subaltern voices has become an admirable task that many respected scholars have undertaken. Especially in regards to South Asia, there has been a series of meticulouslyresearched and nuanced arguments about the role of the subaltern in contributing to the major annals of history that had previously been unrecorded, greatly enriching the study of the history of colonialism and imperialism in South Asia. 20th The case of Bengali Muslim women in India in the late l91 and early century has also proven to be a topic that has produced a great deal of recent literature. With a history of scholarly 19th texts, unearthing the voices of Hindu Bengali middle-class women of late and early 2O’ century, scholars felt that there was a lack of representation of the voices of Muslim Bengali middle-class women of the same time period. In order to counter the overwhelming invisibility of Muslim Bengali women in academic scholarship, scholars, such as Sonia Nishat Amin, tackled the difficult task of presenting the view of Muslim Bengali women. Not only do these new works fill the void of representing an entire community. they also break the persistent representation of Muslim women as ‘backward,’ within normative historical accounts by giving voice to their own views about education, religion, and society) However, any attempt to make ‘invisible’ histories ‘visible’ falls into a few difficulties. -
Muslim Community Organizations in the West History, Developments and Future Perspectives Islam in Der Gesellschaft

Intelligence Assessment HAMAS Sympathizers
Jon S. Corzine UNCLASSIFIED/LAW ENFORCEMENT SENSITIVE Richard L. Cañas Governor JULY 24, 2008 Director Office of Homeland Security & Preparedness Intelligence Assessment HAMAS Sympathizers in New Jersey: Supporting Terrorism Abroad Key Findings • HAMAS, a terrorist group based in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and Syria, draws financial backing from supporters and sympathizers in New Jersey. • HAMAS has no known operational capabilities in New Jersey. • HAMAS supporters engage in both legal and illegal methods of fundraising in New Jersey and globally. • Pro-HAMAS propaganda being disseminated in New Jersey could spur violence by local “homegrown” or “lone wolf” extremists. Background The Palestinian statehood issue remains a popular and unifying cause throughout the Arab and Islamic world, and a high agenda item for militant jihadists. HAMAS is one of the principal terrorist groups involved in this conflict and uses violence in the form of terrorism to further its cause. The organization has long been designated by the US Department of State as a terrorist group. According to the State Department’s 2007 “Country Reports on Terrorism,” HAMAS receives funding from Iran, sympathetic supporters in Arab countries, and from the Palestinian diaspora around the world, including in the United States.i HAMAS, acronymic for Harakat Al-Muqawama Al-Islamia, which translates in English as the Islamic Resistance Movement, is the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan).ii It was founded in 1987 by Sheik Ahmad Yasin and considers itself a “nationalistic religious” movement.iii HAMAS’ basic tenets include liberating all of pre-Israel “Palestine” through jihad and imposing rule by Shari’a (Islamic) law.iv Over the years, the group has firmly embedded itself amongst the Palestinian people, providing them with basic social services and leading the military charge against Israel, both efforts which have earned HAMAS a strong indigenous constituency and group longevity. -
