A Warm Welcome From The Chairman

Good afternoon to you all and welcome to the Memorial ground for another difficult fixture, we extend a warm welcome to the Directors, committee, staff, players and supporters of Framlingham Town who come to us on the back of a high scoring game for themselves last Saturday. We also welcome our match officials for today. . Midweek saw us up against March Town Utd, a toughly fought contest by both teams which saw an episode of the sin bin for each also, from listening to some of you it was your first experience of the sin bin. We did suffer from it last Saturday in the FA Vase against Gorelston, our players are perhaps on a steep learning curve with this rule and may feel harshly done by for two games in a row now. I’m quietly confident that we can get back to a positive outcome today which overall will have been a step in the right direction for the lads and see them become stronger and wiser as a squad! Let’s hope in the near future that our football remains, and we can carry on with the season. In these times of uncertainty we are all hoping that or local area doesn’t come under further restrictions. Please take note of our COVID-19 restrictions, wear face masks in the clubhouse and social distance in and around the pitch please. I have had a gentle reminder from our local constabulary this week that it was observed on Wednesday evening that the social distancing was not being fully adhered to, I ask you all to please be aware of this going forward. . Stay safe and enjoy the game, Jason

Match Officials - Please Respect The Officials at all Times Referee : Kevin Harrington Assistants : Simon Peach & Richard Manning Our Opponents History in Brief

Founded in 1887, our Club’s first ground was Dickson’s Meadow, followed by Brunning’s Meadow, both being part of the Framlingham College complex. The Club next moved to The Red House Farm, before setting up at Hayning’s Meadow, now known as The Pageant Field, in 1932. Then in 1951, the Club became a member section of the newly-formed Framlingham Sports Club, and has had its ground here ever since. In its 133 years of football, Framlingham has played in various Leagues, the Ipswich & District, then the Framlingham League, in its early years, next it was the Woodbridge League, with progress into the Leiston League at the finish of WWII until 1966, at which time the Club gained admission into the Ipswich & District Premier (now SIL Senior) Division, having now competed in the SIL for the last fifty years. We have been in the Thurlow Nunn for the last four seasons, gaining promotion 2 years ago, to the Premier Division, our highest ever achievement within the club, but relegated back to Division 1 for 2019-20 season There has over this length of time been many ups and downs in the form of promotion and relegation, even a dip into Division 2, but Senior status was regained in 1989, and there followed some very successful years as Framlingham won the McNeil Cup in 1990, were SIL Senior runners-up in 1991, and achieved the League Title/McNeil Cup double in 1992. We reached the SCFA Senior Cup Final in 1996, and were again League runners-up the following year. The Club’s fortunes have been varied since then, but following three relegations and subsequent promotions, Framlingham regained Senior status once more, four year ago, and after a very satisfactory season were accepted into the Thurlow Nunn League in 2016/17. The success of any Club is dependent on the hard endeavours of its committee and supporters, and the standard of the facilities and grounds at Framlingham are a tribute to the activities of its members both past and present, who have built a strong and stable Club throughout those many years, and we look forward with confidence to the future as we commence life facing the challenges ahead in this new season, in Division1, of the Thurlow Nunn League, following a 5 month break with the Coronavirus issues Some of our older committee member’s , known and respected by many in the Suffolk footballing fraternity, namely Mr Bryan Parker & Mr & Mrs Sydney Vice, have retired from their club duties, Sydney was awarded the Long Service Meritorious Award in 1991. Secretary Fiona Whatling was awarded hers in 1998 and Mr Bryan Parker was awarded his in 2016 and Bryan relinquished his position of Club President since 1994 last year and we welcomed .our new President , Mr Iain Smith.to the club. This article is by the author of the boo called ‘A History and Guide to Football Programmes’ describing how programmes have changed over a century-and-a-half of Association Football

Everybody’s Doing It in the 1920’s

Programme issuing by clubs and associations became the norm in the 1920’s, resulting from the example shown by those clubs whose pre-Great War programmes had proved to be good sellers, and significant profit makers. Another reason for the explosion of issues was the widespread provision of “Half Time Scoreboards” around football grounds.

In the days before radio coverage and teletext, football crowds had to rely on the “half times” from other grounds being displayed on enormous fixed boards (either at the back of the terracing or at the trackside), to ascertain how rivals were faring. The only means of deciphering the mixture of letters and numbers was to refer to the coded list of fixtures printed in the match programme. In this way, the programme had evolved from being a means of identification of players to being a vehicle for even more spectator information.

Part of the sudden upsurge in programme production was the virtual doubling of the size of the Football League in the early 1920’s, by the formation of Division 3 North and the transfer of clubs from the Southern League to form Division 3 South. Thus we have the first regular issue of programmes from Rochdale in 1922/23, Halifax Town in 1921/22 and such long forgotten ex-League clubs as Wigan Borough and Stalybridge Celtic (both 1921/22) and Nelson (1924/25). Of clubs to join the League in subsequent years, York City issued an 8-page programme in 1924/25 in the Midland League, and Torquay United first issued (starting with FA Cup ties) in 1923/24.

Chelsea, host club of the 1920, 1921, and 1922 FA Cup Finals, set a fine example by publishing the first truly official, and substantial, FA Cup Final programmes. Featuring classical sketches by Bernhard Hugh on the cover, these were 24, 20 and 8-page programmes respectively, the last bearing a very close resemblance to the standard Chelsea programme of the inter-war years.

The 1920’s was the decade in which football programme production became the norm throughout the Football League, and for all major non-league clubs, and it was also the era in which programmes adopted the format we associate with them today. Henceforth, match programmes would be multi-page, stapled, liberally filled with advertisements and including as a minimum; team selections, fixtures/results, league tables, half-time scoreboard and editorial.
