En Jumilla se pueden encontrar vestigios históricos y artísticos de todas las civilizaciones que han habitado el Mediterráneo. La ciudad que los árabes llamaron La Fuerza del Vino es una red de calles blasonadas coronada por un imponente castillo del siglo XV, símbolo de la ciudad y accesible desde el camino del Subidor, en el que encontramos bellas vistas panorámicas del municipio. Jumilla Wine Route HISTORY AND CULTURE The Jumilla Route runs across the north-west of the Region of Murcia, set at the meeting point of La Mancha, Andalusia and Valencia. In Jumilla you can find traces of the history and art of all the civilizations that have lived on the Mediterranean. The city which the Arabs called “the Strength of Wine” is a maze of emblazoned streets crowned by an imposing 15th century castle, symbol of the city and accessible from the pathway of the Subidor, from which you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views. 4 EL VINO Un vino elegante gracias a la variedad de uva Monastrell. Los vinos de la D.O. Jumilla están elaborados a base de la uva monastrell, que representa más del 80% de la superficie cultivada. De esta variedad se obtienen vinos potentes y expresivos, con unos colores violáceos y una redondez muy difícil de superar. Disfruta de la Ruta del vino de Jumilla. A partir de la década de los 90, la uva monastrell está dando lugar a una generación de elegantes vinos, lo que ha convertido al vino de Jumilla en un valor en alza. Los rosados y los tintos elaborados principalmente con monastrell se caracterizan por su frutosidad, intenso color y fuerza. Los vinos blancos elaborados con uva macabeo son limpios y brillantes, destacando por su frescura. 5 THE WINE An elegant wine thanks to the Monastrell grape variety. The wines of the Jumilla D.O. are based on the Monastrell variety which represents over 80% of the surface area under cultivation. This variety produces powerful and expressive wines, with shades of violet and a fullness very difficult to better. From the 1990s on the Monastrell grape has been producing a generation of elegant wines, with Jumilla now an up-and- coming wine. The rosés and reds made mainly from Monastrell are characterised by fruitiness, intense colour and strength. The whites made from Macabeo grapes are clear and bright and particularly fresh. 7 RECURSOS Jumilla, un lugar de secretos antiguos. Más de 20 de establecimientos de calidad componen la Ruta del Vino de Jumilla: hoteles, bodegas que ofrecen manjares entre barricas, enotecas que son lugares de encuentro y debate sobre el universo del vino, restaurantes donde poder degustar la gastronomía de la región, etc. La ruta ofrece múltiples actividades a lo largo de todo el año: cursos de cata, visitas a viñedos, Cabalgata del Vino, etc. 6 RESOURCES Jumilla, a place of ancient secrets. A total of 65 commercial wines from different Spanish designation of origin (Alicante, Bullas, Campo de Borja, Jumilla, Castilla la Mancha, Ribeiro, Ribera de Duero, Rioja, Rueda, Utiel-Requena, Valdepeñas and Valencia) were characterized. The rare earth elements (REEs) content was determined by a high-temperature torch integrated sample introduction system (hTISIS) coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The REE content was used to draw characteristic PDOs radar charts. Results indicated that the REEs fingerprint provides a good prospect to discriminate the different Spanish PDOs, except for Alicante, Castilla la Mancha, Jumilla, Utiel-Requena and Valdepeñas. Finally, for those PDOs that were not properly distinguished, a second fingerprint obtained from Ba, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb and V content was used for discrimination purposes.

    Magazine Mar. 2016 Enormous wealth of plants and landscapes at Jumilla Wine Route Activities The area is cleft by mountain ranges with a huge range of plants and landscapes. Among them is the Sierra del Carche mountain range, declared a Regional Park. This is where the El Carche Route was first planned, and with its fellow mountain routes of Santa Ana, La Pedrera and La Cingla, it provides a fine selection of landscapes and activities. Paragliding, climbing, hang gliding, caving and the GR7 long distance footpath, coming from northern Spain and crossing the entire eastern side of the country. The Route also offers two other very important activities: Music among the Wines and the Gastronomy Seminars. Music among the Wines takes place every weekend from mid-May until late July at a different Route winery every week. After your visit you can enjoy a concert of a range of music (Classical, Jazz, Flamenco, Swing, Singer-Songwriter, Boleros, Pop etc.) put on by local groups or musicians, and during or after the concerts you can sample the local cuisine without having to leave the winery. Other significant facts: Music among the Wines has received a Special Mention in the Wine Routes of Spain’s first Wine Tourism Awards, and every year, the Route awards a gold decoration to famous Jumilla journalists or personalities. Gastronomic Seminars take place at weekends in November, when you can enjoy typical Jumilla menus in restaurants along the route or traditional Jumilla tapas on the Route of Stew in the route’s associated wine bars, wine shops and restaurants.

Likewise, Spain is incredibly rich in culture, with a wide array of languages, histories, cultures, and cuisines found throughout the nation. The sheer number and variety of Spanish wines and the incredible variety of cultures found in Spain may be daunting to the uninitiated. Thus, a guide to Spanish wine and culture, which not only details the two but links them, as well, may prove very helpful to the Spanish wine newcomer or perhaps even a sommelier. This thesis-guide was compiled through the research of the various Denominaciones de Origen of Spain, the history of Spain, the regions of Spain and their individual histories and cultures, and, of course, the many, many wines of Spain.
