Continental Chapter records MSS.1 Historical Note In 1876, there were many celebrations to commemorate the centennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. As a part of this patriotic observance, a group of descendants of patriots in the American Revolution in the San Francisco, California, area formed an organization known as the Sons of Revolutionary Sires. The main objective of this fraternal and civic society was to salute those men and women who pledged their lives, money, and sacred honor to the battle for independence from Great Britain. They wanted to keep their ancestors’ stories of patriotism and courage alive in the belief that man’s struggle against tyranny is universal and their stories would inspire and sustain succeeding generations. On April 30, 1889, the Sons of Revolution Sires became the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution—the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of George Washington as the nation’s first president. The SAR is as a fraternal society composed of lineal descendants of the men who wintered at Valley Forge, signed the Declaration of Independence, fought in battles of the American Revolution, served in Continental Congress, or supported the cause of American Independence in any way. Congress passed a charter establishing the National Society on June 9, 1906. President Theodore Roosevelt, a member of the SAR, signed the original charter. The Continental Chapter of the SAR of Muncie, Indiana was established to honor the American Revolutionary patriots from Delaware County. The group’s motto is "Libertas et Patria," meaning "Liberty and Patriotism." Scope and Contents This collection includes photographs, records, correspondence, and publications from Sons of the American Revolution in Muncie, Indiana, as well as the Indiana Society and the National Organization ranging from 1914 until 2012 regarding the branches of the SAR organization.
