Nantes is well known for its prestigious maritime history. While port and naval activities have now moved downstream, Nantes turned into the metropolitan centre and the economic capital of the West of France. The architectural heritage of Nantes reflects the town’s wealth and importance over centuries : the mediae- val remnants in Bouffay, the castle of the Ducs de Bretagne, the Opéra Graslin, the Cathedral, or the Passage Pommeraye, a jewel of Art Nouveau. Unfortunately I am afraid you will not have time to visit Nantes in depth. At least we will have the op- portunity to experience the bouquet of the Muscadet, and the best (I hope so…) of the local culinary tradition. If the main reason of your coming is the congress, you will enjoy the program. Indeed the scientific congress committee, headed by Henri Dumon and Peter Markwell, offers us an excellent program with cutting edge information. For two days and a half we have a core program with 12 scientific lectures and over 120 research communications. Keynote lectures will give us updates in some fields of general or clinical nutrition. On Saturday morning we have scheduled a mini-symposium that should show us interesting insights of the comparative aspects of fatty liver disease. During coffee and lunch breaks you will of course use the time for meeting old friends or making new ones. You also have the chance to select the winner of the ESVCN abstract 2005. Try to visit the posters in the exhibit hall during the breaks. The winner of the best poster will also be announced during the congress gala dinner. Do not forget to thank the sponsors for their continuing support of this congress. Well, with all this new and exciting information at your fingertips, research as well as continuing education are at their best. We are in great depth for the help from Joana Nery and Valéry Corberand in the organiz- ing committee. Hope you appreciated their availability and efficiency. I also want to thank all the colleagues of the scientific committee. All submitted papers have been re- viewed by a pair of members. It has been a lot of work too. The ESVCN congress is traditionally a place not only for scientific information but also for social gatherings. Firstly, Royal Canin invites you all to a social dinner Thursday evening. Friday evening will be the time of the official Gala Dinner, thanks to Nestlé Purina Pet- Care, the gold sponsor of this congress, at the Museum of Fine Arts. This might be the time to discover the masterpieces of the museum, to listen to some musique, and to taste some wonders from the sea and the vineyards. Most importantly, our congress has its main reputation from excellent speak- ers and abstract presenters. Finally I want therefore to thank you all for coming and sharing your knowledge. The preferred feeding route is dependent on the condition of the patient. If there are no contraindications, every patient must receive nutritional support, at least consistent with the resting energy requirement (RER). Several nutrients may be beneficial during healing and recovery from illness or surgery, but further research is needed to empirically certify the effects of these nutrients in critically ill patients. Many animals will recover from mild illness or standard surgical procedures at home, but patients with more severe disease or conditions will be hospitalized during recovery. It is recommended to have a protocol for nutritional support of hospitalized patients since early nutritional support has been reported to improve outcome and to shorten hospitalization time in humans [1] [2] and dogs [3].

To keep this cost low, one must sup- ply the right amount of feed to the animals. Overfeeding is wasteful. Underfeeding will decrease animal perfor- mance and profitability. Therefore, proper animal feeding and nutrition are crucial to the profitability of the live- stock enterprise. Laboratory analyses of the composition of feed or forage are used to assess their nutritive value (Figure 1). A typi- cal feed analysis includes measurements of some important quality attributes or parameters (e.g., crude protein, fiber, digestibility, etc.) used to define nutritive value. Other parameters are analyzed under some special circum- stances. For example, acid detergent insoluble crude protein (ADICP) is usually only measured if heat damage to the feed is suspected. Webb, PhD, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM (Small Animal Internal Medicine) Colorado State University There is no mystery when it comes to a “yellow” cat. Icterus and jaundice—both of which describe a yellowish pigmentation of the skin—indicate hyperbilirubinemia, a 5- to 10-fold elevation in serum bilirubin concentration. However, this is where the certainty ends and the diagnostic challenge begins. The icteric cat presentation is not a sensitive or specific marker of disease, despite the visually obvious and impressive clinical sign (Figure 1).1 The objective of this article is to briefly review differentials for hyperbilirubinemia in the cat, and present a diagnostic and therapeutic strategy that will help practitioners approach this problem in an efficient and effective manner. ACADEMIC ABSTRACT The prevalence of overweight and obesity in the feline population is estimated to be 25.7% and 33.8%, respectively. Feline obesity is associated with comorbidities such as insulin resistance and hepatic lipidosis. Several risk factors are associated with obesity including middle age, neuter status, decreased activity, and diet. Obesity management is multifaceted and includes client education, diet modification, and consistent monitoring. Successful obesity management may be dependent on owner perception of their cat’s quality of life during a prescribed weight loss plan. Low perceived quality of life may result in failure to complete the weight loss process. Food toys may be used to enhance environmental enrichment, allow cats to express their natural predatory behavior and overall improve owner-perceived quality of life. Therefore, we set out to investigate the role of food toys in owner-perceived quality of life of obese cats during a prescribed weight loss plan. Fifty-five cats with a BCS > 7 were enrolled in a double-blinded weight loss study and randomized into one of two groups: food toy (n=26) or food bowl (n=29).

However, a quick review of the facts about carbohydrates reveals their importance in companion animal nutrition and commercial pet food production. Carbohydrates are the major energy-containing constituent of plants and represent about 60 to 90 percent of plant dry matter. In plants, carbohydrates fall either into the “structural” category, composed of plant cell walls, or the “non-structural” category, composed of plant cell contents. The carbohydrates found in the cell contents are starch, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, fructan polysaccharides and resistant starch. Cell walls consist of beta glucans, pectins, gums, hemicelluloses, cellulose and lignin/phenolics.
