2019 Veterinary Guide

Whole Food Veterinary Clinical Comprehensive Veterinary Product Guide for the exclusive use by licensed and technicians It’s Time Vets Take Back Nutrition!

JustFoodForDogs offers the world’s first line of clinically proven, scientifically tested, specialist approved daily and veterinary support fresh whole food diets. We have amassed a tremendous amount of pet nutrition knowledge since the first kibble and canned commercial formulas were created, and many veterinarians and pet owners are no longer accepting these feed grade foods – and their highly processed ingredients – as the best nutrition to give to their pets.

Our mission is to transform our pets’ health through nutrition and veterinarians are our most valued partners. Our daily recipes are the only whole food diets that have been clinically shown to boost the immune system through independent university research. The results were published in the Journal of Physiology and Animal Nutrition. Our line of daily diets have undergone robust humane feeding trials and digestibility studies through independent universities, and we are committed to ongoing research in fresh whole food nutrition.

Our concept is simple: we use only ingredients inspected and approved by the USDA for human consumption to maximize bioavailability and quality and to minimize potential contaminants and toxins. We cook the food to minimum safe temperatures established by the FDA in our own kitchens in Southern California – nothing is raw. Our food is prepared fresh daily in small batches, instantly chilled and packaged fresh frozen. Refrigeration is our only preservative. We worked closely with board certified specialists in various fields on the development of our veterinary line of diets, and we regularly test our food and ingredients through independent laboratories and through our board certified veterinary toxicologist and professor at Western University, Dr. John Tegzes, VMD, Dipl. ABVT.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to improve your patients’ quality of life through proven whole food nutrition.

“As a veterinary toxicologist I am aware of the potential toxins that can occur naturally in pet foods. Feeding my dogs a food with trusted ingredients is important to me and that’s why I choose to use JustFoodForDogs. The likelihood of a food-based toxin such as aflatoxin and other mycotoxins is lower than what might occur in dry kibbled foods. And my dogs really love it! They really thrive on it.”

• Pork Tenderloin is inspected and approved by the USDA for human consumption. It is a complete and lean novel protein loaded with many essential vitamins (thiamin, niacin, B6, Riboflavin and B12) and minerals (phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, calcium, iron and manganese). • Quinoa, also known as the ancient grain, is actually more of a legume. It is a seed related to beets, chard and spinach and contains many powerful anti-inflammatory phytonutrients. It is high in protein, fiber, magnesium, folate, phosphorus and manganese. Joint & Skin Support • Kale is high in antioxidants, including vitamin C, beta-carotene and manganese, and contains anti-inflammatory phytonutrients known to control the inflammatory process. • Carrots are full of antioxidant compounds and are one of the richest sources of the pro-vitamin A carotenes. The antioxidant compounds help prevent inflammatory disease. • Fuji Apples are palatable and high in antioxidants and fiber. Apples are also high in quercetin, an anti-inflammatory compound. • Coconut Oil contains medium chain (MCTs), which have been shown to increase the liver’s efficiency at metabolizing energy from fat, helping to maintain dogs at their ideal weight. • Type II Collagen is a naturally occurring source of the most bioavailable and researched components of hyaline joint cartilage, the delicate, clear, glass-like tissue that protects bone and is found in most joints. Human research on type II collagen has shown favorable effects on joint inflammation and mobility, range of motion and pain. 2626 Edition 12 • JustFoodForDogs and the stylized JustFoodForDogs logo are registered trademarks of JustFoodForDogs, LLC INGREDIENTS (Cont.) • Chondroitin Sulfate is considered a promising treatment for osteoarthritis in humans and dogs. Clinical trials in humans and some suggest that chondroitin may have significant effects on joint mobility and pain when compared to placebo. • Hyaluronic Acid is a natural structural component of skin and connective tissue of animals and humans. The key to this ingredient lies in its ability to retain moisture within the joint. It’s considered to have a greater capacity to hold moisture than any other natural polymer, lubricating joints and providing comfort. • Olive Oil is high in essential fatty acids including linoleic and linolenic acids. Olive oil has been shown to mimic the effects of anti-inflammatory drugs. • Icelandic Premium Fish Oil is sourced direct from the world’s cleanest, purest and greenest sources. This exclusive supplement is pure, potent, natural and detoxified, and provides Omega 3 fatty acids in highly biologically available forms of EPA and DHA. • JustFoodForDogs Nutrient Blend is formulated specifically to meet NRC standards. PURPOSE: Despite a trend toward novel feeding methods, there is a lack of evidence of quantifiable differences between feeding modalities in veterinary nutrition. This study, described in approved ACUC protocol #12.002, looked at healthy dogs (n=21) fed a freshly prepared, lightly cooked, whole food (WF) diet balanced with nutrient supplementation and formulated to meet NRC 2006 RA guidelines using USDA certified ingredients and information from the USDA standard release database and suppliers.

METHODS: Dogs were aged 1 to 6 years, and included adequate representation of small, medium, and large breeds. All dogs were eating exclusively a standard commercial extruded (EX) kibble diet prior to the study. Physical exam findings, complete blood cell counts, and comprehensive chemistry panels were collected and recorded at t=0 days, t=180 days, and t= 365 days, after introducing WF. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests with each dog serving as the experimental unit (SAS, 2013). RESULTS: Findings included a notable increase in mean circulating globulins (P<0.01 at both t=180 and t=365), a corresponding decrease in mean albumin (P<0.01 at both t=180 and t=365), with no change (P>0.57) in total protein. Mean albumin:globulin ratios shifted from 1.87 at t=0 to 1.11 at t=365 (P<0.01). There was a mean white blood cell increase at t=365 (P<0.01), including an increase in mean granulocytes at t=180 (P<0.02) and t=365 (P<0.01), within the reference range. There was no change (P>0.49) in red blood cell count, however mean hemoglobin increased at t=180 (P<0.03) and mean hematocrit increased at t=180 (P<0.01) and t=365 (P<0.01). There was also an increase in mean creatinine at t=180 and t=365 (P<0.05 and P<0.03), within the reference interval. There were no notable trends observed on alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, blood urea , or calcium and phosphorus levels (P>0.10). Physical exams, body condition scores, weight measurements, and client history deemed all dogs healthy during the study. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: These findings show a measurable difference in some blood parameters, including a measure of immune function (A/G ratio), when WF was fed instead of EX to healthy dogs and could provide evidence of the benefits of feeding USDA certified ingredients, supplemented with nutrients and formulated to meet 2006 NRC guidelines, as a WF feeding modality in dogs.

JustFoodForDogs® Veterinary Supplements offer a high quality, evidence-based choice for your nutriceutical needs. Demand for supplements has increased substantially in the US since the 1980’s, and Public Health authorities consider prevention and treatment with nutriceuticals as a powerful tool in maintaining health and combating chronic disease. There are clear benefits to using supplements. Unlike FDA approved drugs, however, over-the-counter supplements and nutriceuticals are not held to the same quality standards or safety testing, and some formulations are not balanced to achieve benefits.

At JustFoodForDogs, we believe that properly formulated supplements complement optimal nutrition and conventional veterinary therapies. We have reviewed both the human and veterinary literature in order to ensure that our line of veterinary supplements is based on evidence. We have chosen formulations at the proper potency for efficacy and safety, and balanced our supplements to complement our diets and your veterinary care. Our approach is to critically evaluate the evidence for each formulation, and we only include the highest quality varieties with evidence of efficacy and proven safety. Recently, the German government funded an expert panel to review the evidence for commonly prescribed supplements and published the German Commission E monographs. It is considered one of the best authorities on safety and efficacy for supplements, and was reviewed carefully when developing our supplement line. This is just one example of the resources used and the level of scrutiny our supplement choices go through.

Your clients will use supplements and neutraceuticals, often without your knowledge, advice, and oversight; with JustFoodForDogs Veterinary Supplements, you can direct the use of effective supplements and be certain that the products you are recommending are high quality, held to high standards for purity and testing, and are evidence-based. All of our supplements are produced at the same high standards used for human consumption, in a certified Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) facility, which our veterinary team personally visits and inspects. When you choose JustFoodForDogs Veterinary Supplements, you can relax knowing that purity and potency are confirmed through analytical methods and that the dosage and indications are based on scientific evidence.

Finally, you can rest assured that each supplement was carefully reviewed by me as a specialist in veterinary toxicology and advocate for complementary supplement and nutriceutical use. Supplements John Tegzes, MA, VMD, Dipl. ABVT

Benefits include: • Supports healthy gastrointestinal function • Over five billion colony forming units (CFUs) of beneficial live cultures • Six strains of beneficial Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. • Formulated specifically for dogs’ microbiota and compatible with the human microbiota • High-grade, human-quality supplement SUPPLEMENT OVERVIEW Microbiota is a relatively new term from an emerging area of science that looks at the microorganisms that inhabit our bodies. In an adult person, cells in the microbiota outnumber human cells! Since the 1990s, there has been extensive research to characterize these organisms and their roles in health and disease. Research is showing that foods that are eaten hugely influence the microbiota that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract.1,2 Highly processed foods and those containing artificial sweeteners have negative impacts while fresh, whole foods have beneficial effects. An excellent probiotic supplement supplies at least 5 billion beneficial organisms per dose (as CFUs – colony forming units), and has multiple strains of proven beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus spp.3 and Bifidobacterium spp.4 The beneficial organisms in our Probiotic Live help promote healthy digestion and assimilation of nutrients, and also help rid the body of unwanted, negative organisms. All of the diets prepared at JustFoodForDogs contain prebiotics that work in synergy with our Probiotic Live, the perfect complement to a whole food daily diet. SUPPLEMENT INDICATIONS In healthy and disease states, Probiotic Live helps to: • Normalize the disease fighting bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. • Fight inflammation and malabsorption of nutrients. • Maintain beneficial bacteria during antimicrobial drug treatment of an infection. Probiotic Live is particularly useful during and after any round of prescription antibiotics. RECOMMENDED USES • To promote wellness in all dogs of all ages. • To prevent and combat chronic diseases such as • To ease transition to a new diet. obesity, diabetes, cancers, and auto-immune diseases. • To normalize gastrointestinal flora during and after treatment with antibiotics. Benefits include: • All natural sedative • Non-narcotic, proven effective • Can be used on its own, or as an adjunct to conventional therapies • High-grade, human-quality supplement

SUPPLEMENT OVERVIEW Anxiety and phobias in dogs are relatively common; fireworks, thunderstorms, sirens, and other sudden loud noises are triggers for dogs’ keen sense of sound. Other triggers include trips to the veterinarian, separation anxiety, and disruptions in their normal routine. JFFD Calm uses a proven combination of botanical herbal remedies shown to work very similarly to prescription medications, but without the tendency to cause over-sedation or other unwanted side effects. The plants in Calm, valerian root and passionflower, work by enhancing and increasing the function of GABA receptors in the brain, allowing for a more natural calming effect.1,2 The chemistry of Passiflora incarnata (passionflower) is well documented; pharmacological effects are mediated via modulation of the GABA system

including affinity to GABAA and GABAB receptors, and effects on GABA uptake. Valerian root extracts bind on

GABAA receptors and enhance the brain’s response to GABA. GABA is one of the brain’s most important inhibitory (calming) neurotransmitter. SUPPLEMENT INDICATIONS JFFD Calm can be safely used daily in dogs prone to anxiety from separation or other chronic causes. Likewise, it can be used only when needed in times of high stress like those associated with noise from fireworks and thunderstorms. In these cases if the noises are anticipated ahead of time, it works best if given beginning five days before the stressful events. For instance, for the noises associated with the 4th of July, begin giving Calm on June 29.

RECOMMENDED USES Calm can be used daily, or during periods of: • High anxiety and stress. • Separation anxiety, vet trips, or firework or storm phobia. SAFETY Calm is exceedingly safe and higher doses can be used. Benefits include: • Supports healthy joint function • Made with natural glucosamine sulfate, not synthetic glucosamine hydrochloride • Does not include synthetic MSM • High-grade, human-quality supplement

SUPPLEMENT OVERVIEW Most of the reliable research on glucosamine has been conducted on glucosamine sulfate, and not on glucosamine hydrochloride, a synthetic form commonly used in animal products. Glucosamine sulfate occurs in nature, and is found in the fluid within joints (synovial fluid). In humans, there is sufficient evidence demonstrating its effectiveness in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Studies in dogs have demonstrated improvement in pain scores, significantly alleviated pain compared to placebo, and improved overall activity, as evidenced by owner questionnaires and ground force plates.1,2 Glucosamine sulfate has also been shown to have better bioavailability in dogs.3 For these reasons, JFFD Joint Care contains glucosamine sulfate. Chondroitin sulfate is also included as it provides added benefits in dogs with osteoarthritis.4 Some joint supplements for dogs also contain methylsulfonlymethane (MSM), which is only available from synthetic sources and the manufacturing process sometimes leads to chemical contaminants. Until there is a natural source of MSM, we will not include it in our Joint Care. SUPPLEMENT INDICATIONS Joint Care is indicated in healthy dogs as a preventative or in dogs with osteoarthritis and degenerative joint diseases as a complement to other therapies, including weight loss, physical therapy and rehab, and rest. RECOMMENDED USES • Healthy dogs to maintain joint health. • Dogs with specific joint diseases such as hip • Dogs with osteoarthritis to slow its progression. dysplasia, patellar luxation, OCD, etc. • As an adjunct to NSAID therapy. SAFETY Glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate supplements are considered safe. There are reported safety issues with glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin hydrochloride with reports of dogs suffering from liver and multi-system organ failure after accidental large-dose overdoses (>25 to 200 capsules.) None have been reported from overdose of glucosamine sulfate. It also has been shown to affect the way the body responds to injury. According to scientific research and double-blind, placebo-controlled studies in humans, hyaluronic acid taken orally has also been shown to be effective for osteoarthritis. 3Chondroitin Sulfate is naturally derived from animal sources and helps protect cartilage in joints from breaking down. Chondroitin sulfate is one of the building blocks of cartilage and has been reported to reduce joint damage and slow disease progression in osteoarthritis, through peer-reviewed scientific research. 4 5 6 7 SUPPLEMENT INDICATIONS Joint care plus is indicated in healthy dogs or cats or dogs and cats with osteoarthritis and degenerative joint disease as a standalone or complement therapy. RECOMMENDED USES • Healthy dogs and cats to promote tissue recovery after exercise • Joint diseases in dogs: hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, OCD, etc. • Joint disease in cats: osteoarthritis, back pain, sprains or injuries • As a standalone therapy or adjunct to NSAID therapy SAFETY Joint Care Plus is a naturally derived hydrolysate of avian sternum and a natural blend of mucopolysaccharide compounds and amino acids (the building blocks of joint cartilage). Dogs >100 lbs: 4 capsules daily KollaGen II-xs™ is a trademark of Certified Nutraceuticals, Inc. and is protected by U.S. patent #8,344,106. 1 In the trial, researchers selected 20 patients’ ages 17 years to 81 years (10 males / 10 females) with confirmed joint damage and cartilage injuries, diagnosed with imaging/scoping with low to high pain scales. Supplementation with KollaGen II-xs produced a significant treatment response at seven days for flexibility (33.3% increase; P = 0.035) and at 60 days for general pain (91.6% reduction; P = 0.005), flexibility (68.5% increase; P = 0.004) and range of motion associated pain (76.1% reduction; P = 0.011). The substantial treatment response continued through 60 days for pain (78.8% reduction; P = 0.001). There were no adverse events reported during the study and the treatment was reported to be well tolerated by study participants. It was concluded that KollaGen II-xs benefited joint inflammation and pain, flexibility, as well as supported arthritic participants (rheumatoid and osteoarthritis alike). 2 Another study, entitled “A 30-day clinical investigation of the efficacy of KollaGen II-xs, a new avian sternal collagen type II hydrolysate,” was recently published in the peer-reviewed journal HealthMED. The results of the study indicate that the administration of 1500mg of avian sternal collagen type II hydrolysate daily ingested over 30 days is safe and efficacious in reducing symptoms of joint discomfort. 3 Oe M, Tashiro T, Yoshida H, et al. Benefits include: • Supports healthy immune function • Fights infection from bacteria, viruses, molds • Anti-cancer properties • May help normalize blood glucose level in diabetic patients • High-grade, human-quality supplement SUPPLEMENT OVERVIEW Olive leaf is one of the earliest phytomedicines. In recent years, scientists have investigated why people living in Mediterranean regions seem to suffer less from diseases associated with aging. Research has centered on the phenolic compounds found in olive products. The active ingredient oleuropein (oh-lee-or-oh-pin) is the principle phenolic compound found in olives, and is found in highest concentrations in olive leaves, which are used to produce our Skin & Allergy Care. Oleuropein is rapidly absorbed and distributed after ingestion. Pharmacological properties include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antimicrobial, and antiviral effects. Numerous studies have demonstrated these properties.1,2,3,4 SUPPLEMENT INDICATIONS Because of the vast array of pharmacological actions, there are many uses for Skin & Allergy Care: • A general health promotion agent in healthy dogs. • As an adjunct treatment in dogs suffering from bacterial and viral infections such as gastroenteritis, dermatitis, ear infections, respiratory tract infections, and others. • Evidence in humans has shown particular benefits in skin cancer treatments and prevention; its anti- cancer actions are useful as prevention in all older dogs as well as those currently suffering from cancer. • Lastly, some research has demonstrated usefulness in diabetic animals as it helps to normalize blood glucose concentrations in animals with hyperglycemia. RECOMMENDED USES • For general health promotion in all dogs of all ages. • As an adjunct treatment for bacterial, viral, • To hasten healing of skin, ear, and other infections, or fungal infections. including pododermatitis. • To restore normal, healthy gastrointestinal flora along with probiotics. • To relieve tear staining around the eyes. SAFETY While olive leaf extract has been shown to be very safe, it is not generally necessary to exceed the dosage listed on the label. It is unlikely that accidental overdoses will result in any adverse signs. Because of its ability to lower blood glucose, carefully monitor dogs undergoing treatment for diabetes. Benefits include: • Promotes healthy aging by reducing inflammation • High quality Omega-3 essential fatty acids from clean and sustainable sardines, herring, anchovies, and mackerel • Studies show EPA and DHA are beneficial for osteoarthritis, atopic dermatitis, and the inflammatory effects of cancer • High-grade, human-quality supplement SUPPLEMENT OVERVIEW Two types of essential fatty acids must be tracked in animal nutrition, categorized as omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-6 fatty acids can be potentially inflammatory and come primarily from vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and meats. In contrast, the anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) come primarily from fatty fish, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is found in lower amounts in walnuts, dark leafy vegetables, and flaxseed. Research in humans is showing that EPA and DHA may protect against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and is finding many other benefits including cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory effects. In dogs, EPA and DHA have demonstrated benefits in treating osteoarthritis,1 skin diseases and allergic dermatitis,2 and as useful adjuncts to chemotherapy for certain cancers.3 We believe all dogs can age healthfully from daily supplementation of EPA and DHA. Sourcing is extremely important when it comes to a fish oil supplement. JFFD Omega Plus is sourced from premium sardines, herring, anchovy, and mackerel from the cold, clean, sustainable of Iceland. We specifically have chosen this source because it is least likely to be contaminated with environmental toxins that can be found in higher trophic level fish, particularly farmed salmon. Our fish oil is screened for contaminants such as dioxins, PCBs, and mercury before being bottled and delivered to our kitchens. SUPPLEMENT INDICATIONS • For healthy aging in all dogs. • For general anti-inflammatory properties. RECOMMENDED USES • To relieve itching and inflammation associated with skin diseases and allergies. • To relieve pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, degenerative joint disease, hip and elbow dysplasia. • To complement conventional treatments for heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, skin disease, cancer, and behavior issues. SAFETY Supplementation with Omega Plus is not associated with toxicity. Omega-3 fatty acids may interfere with normal blood clotting mechanisms and may therefore be discontinued at least 3 days before surgery.
