SOLENT MG - Back Roads to Lunch – a drive from the west-bound services on the M27 to Lower Chute and back to Winchester on a variety of roads suitable for the older car. By using the ‘tulip’ system of route guide it is hoped that cars will not move along the route in procession, and that the faster cars/drivers and bikes can make good progress without the need to hold back for the more sedate motorist. This system also allows for stops to take photographs, at your leisure. This drive starts from the car park outside the café in the west-bound M27 service area. You can fuel-up as you leave on the drive, although there should be fuel available en-route, but in these uncertain times rural service stations do keep funny hours and they do close – all too often for good. You will be deemed to be in control of your vehicle at all times. It is your responsibility to ensure that you & your vehicle comply with the law (inc speed limits) at all times. And, take extra care through the villages Key to Symbols Caution Point of interest (info in italics) Fuel Pub The Route The total distance for this drive is 35.8 miles to the lunch stop, the intention is that we should all meet at the Hatchet, at Lower Chute by 12:45 for lunch, although there are other possible refreshment stops en-route. (The Hatchet = SU312532 – post code SP11 9DX – phone 01264 730229) All errors and omissions are mine, and I’d love to hear about them so that I can improve your experience on future drives.

  • Tenants, Tenures and Transfers: the Landholding Experience of Rural
Tenants, Tenures and Transfers: the landholding experience of rural customary tenants in some Hampshire downland manors, 1645-1705 Submitted by Juliet Dorothy Gayton to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History In June 2013 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University Signature: ………………………………………………………….. i Abstract This thesis examines the impact of different customary manorial tenures on the land transfer activities of rural tenants between 1645 and 1705. The study of land transfer has formed part of the attempt by historians to establish how and why England developed from family-based subsistence farming into large-scale commercialised agriculture before many of its Continental neighbours. A key element in any study of land transfer is the property rights of those undertaking the transfers. England had a variety of customary tenures, and little research has focussed on how they operated and impacted on rural tenant transfer behaviour in the early modern period. This study uses evidence from eight manors in Hampshire with four different types of tenure to explore how they affected what land transfer options the tenants had, and how transfers were used to further family and economic objectives. The types of tenure were copyhold of inheritance; copyhold for three lives; copyhold for three lives where the first could act alone; and a form of customary freehold.

Longparish Parish Council Jonathan Frere, Chairman email [email protected] phone 720574 Date: 12 February 2014 Flooding This email goes to everyone on the LCA mailing list and will be published on the village website. Please look there for updates and let us know if there is anything you feel should be added to help improve the information below. Longparish is coping well and with our usual good community spirit but …. Springs have started flowing right up the valley and the road between Upton and Vernham Dean is now a torrent. The main sewer is inundated with ground water and overflowing in places and Southern Water are tankering from time to time at the Shop and the Plough. The surface water drainage system is also full to capacity and overflowing along the main road and down Mill Lane to the river. Some households are having trouble with ground water and are pumping to keep it at bay. At present the pump houses near The Plough and at Forton are working and can pump away all the water that reaches them. But the sewer pipes are full to capacity and some people have had problems with toilets not flushing. Further heavy rain is forecast for Friday so we need to be aware that things may get worse and to prepare as far as possible. Environment Agency Flood warnings You can register for flood warning by email and phone here https://fwd.environment-agency.gov.uk/app/olr/home There are a number of flood warnings in place across the Test Valley.
