Queens College Student Choreography Showcase 2021 About the Choreographers Alisha Anderson is a professional dancer who works every day to fulfill the highest expression of herself as a human being and an artist. Alisha has studied various genres of dance for over 20 years and specializes in tap, Afrobeat and African dance. She began her dance career at her family owned dance school, Dance Arts Repertory Theater, which had a well known company called Yori that specialized in African dance; and inspired her to become a professional African dancer. Alisha has studied under Randi Lloyd, Lancelot Theobald, Shandella Molly, Jewel Love, Chet and many more. She is currently attending Queens College where she is graduating with a Minor in Dance and a MaJor in Education. Alisha has traveled to Ghana, Senegal and other countries in West Africa to further her studies in African dance. Alisha has performed professionally with Salsa Ache which is a salsa and Afro Caribbean dance company, and currently performs with two of the top African dance companies in New York City, Harambee and Bambara. In 2014 Alisha joined Harambee which is directed by Shandella Molly and located in Bronx, NY. With Harambee Alisha has performed for the African American Museum, Nick Cannon, Vice the TV show and many more. In 2015 she joined Bambara which is directed by Jewel Love, and with the company she has performed for the Tira Banks show, Dance Africa (BAM), numerous African festivals, weddings and much more. Alisha began her teaching career at Layla Dance and Drum school where she has taught for the past three years and enjoys working with the students. -

April Irish Music & 2018 Márt Dance Association Márta The mission of the Irish Music and Dance Association is to support and promote Irish music, dance, and other cultural traditions to insure their continuation. Inside this issue: IMDA Recognizes Dancers 2 Educational Grants Available Thanks You 6 For Irish Music and Dance Students Open Mic Night 7 The Irish Music and Dance Association (IMDA) would like to lend a hand to students of Irish music, dance or cultural pursuits. We’re looking for students who have already made a significant commitment to their studies, and who could use some help to get to the next level. It may be that students are ready to improve their skills (like fiddler and teacher Mary Vanorny who used her grant to study Sligo-style fiddling with Brian Conway at the Portal Irish Music Week) or it may be a student who wants to attend a special class (like Irish dancer Annie Wier who traveled to Boston for the Riverdance Academy). These are examples of great reasons to apply for an IMDA Educational Grant – as these students did in 2017. 2018 will be the twelfth year of this program, with help extended to 43 musicians, dancers, language students and artists over the years. The applicant may use the grant in any way that furthers his or her study – help with the purchase of an instrument, tuition to a workshop or class, travel expenses – the options are endless. Previous grant recipients have included musicians, dancers, Irish language students and a costume designer, but the program is open to students of other traditional Irish arts as well. -

The open-air picnic with Mazowsze at Karolin, introducing the summer, is already over. The ensemble presented several shows for to the audience – concerts of various kinds of music: folk, classical, pop, and film music, for example from James Bond movies and Pirates of the Caribbean. The audience saw Mazowsze's soloists, choir, and orchestra, but also several guests. Among them, there were the renowned opera and operetta singers Dorota Laskowiecka and Adam Sobierajski, who sang for example “O mio babbino caro” from the opera Gianni Schicchi, “Nessun dorma” from Turandot, and the operetta fan favorite duet of Silva and Edwin from the operetta Die Csárdásfürstin [The Csardas Princess or The Riviera Girl]. The young, internationally renowned and awarded bass-baritone Łukasz Karauda, also presented opera repertoire on the stage. The singer, who has recently also become Mazowsze's soloist, sang “The Toreador Song” from Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. The concerts were conducted by Jacek Boniecki, Wojciech Gwiszcz, and Klemens Starybrat. It was a very special opportunity to listen to them, as each of them creates his own particular sound with the ensemble's orchestra. Mazowsze however, is not only music and singing – there is also dancing, performed by the ensemble's ballet. The program included pieces that allowed the dancers to show their versatility. There were the Polish national and regional dances Mazowsze is famous for, but also the classic tango (solo by Kamila Borowska and Adam Czechlewski) and waltz (solo by Dorota Rak and Marcos De Lima).Mazowsze 's performance wasn't the only occasion to see dance: there were also presentations prepared by the participants of the “Dancing with Mazowsze” workshops, and the performance prepared by the Folk Dance Ensemble “Pruszkowiacy”. -

T'B I T The longer I stay in this "business the surer I am of two things to ensure its long life and continued in- terest in it: PROPER PROGRAMMING AMD A YOUTH PROGRAM . The callers who have been active for ten or more years and are still in demand are the ones who program each of their dances so that they give something for the "hot shot" dancer; something for the "newcomer" to square dancing; and a heck of lot for the people in between who outnumber the others maybe ten to one. The dances for the in-betweens will "be a good mixture of old and traditional dances and enough of the neweir ones to keep the floor on its toes. And one thing they never are guilty of: they never deliberately try to "throw the floor". Any idiot can do that; it takes a real good caller to sense the limitations of the group and arrange or re-arrange his material accordingly. -

The repertoire of the complete series of concerts was chosen with the intention of demonstrating the ability of the per- former to project music of various types and composed in different periods. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2007, 105 pp., 5 tables, 65 examples, references, 97 titles. The primary purpose of this study is to address performance issues in the Polish Fantasy, Op. 19, by examining characteristics of Polish folk dances and how they are incorporated in this unique work by Paderewski. The study includes a comprehensive history of the fantasy in order to understand how Paderewski used various codified generic aspects of the solo piano fantasy, as well as those of the one-movement concerto introduced by nineteenth-century composers such as Weber and Liszt. Given that the Polish Fantasy, Op. 19, as well as most of Paderewski’s compositions, have been performed more frequently in the last twenty years, an analysis of the combination of the three characteristic aspects of the Polish Fantasy, Op.19 - Polish folk music, the generic rhetoric of a fantasy and the one- movement concerto - would aid scholars and performers alike in better understanding the composition’s engagement with various traditions and how best to make decisions about those traditions when approaching the work in a concert setting. -

2016 // 17 SEASON Northrop and Walker Art Center Present CCN-BALLET DE LORRAINE Thu, Feb 16, 7:30 pm Carlson Family Stage Devoted Fabrications Sounddance Dear Friends of Northrop, Northrop at the University of Minnesota and Walker Art Center Present Tonight, we collaborate with Walker Art Center as part of their major survey: Merce Cunningham: Common Time, offering two of Cunningham’s groundbreaking choreographic works. The program begins with Devoted, a commissioned work by the trend setting choreographic duo Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud. Infused with current dance hall and pop culture, CCN-BALLET DE these French choreographers are clearly influenced by modern and even post-modern American dance history—history that was forever changed by Cunningham's impact. LORRAINE Fabrications, the second work on our program, actually had its world premiere right here at Northrop in 1987, with Cunningham dancing, as he did in every performance by his company until he was 70. Culture serves as an extension of identity. Dance is one of the cultural elements easiest to bring along; it is one of the most mobile elements of culture, tucked away in the muscle memory of our bodies.
