Epicentrem dění se stal New York, město umělců. V závěru druhé části zdůrazňuji vliv Velvetů na ostatní hudebníky a to zejména na pražskou kapelu The Plastic People of The Universe, která spolu s Václavem Havlem stála u kořenů změn tehdejšího režimu v Československu. Mimo jiné zmiňuji například Michaela Jacksona, Marilyn Monroe, The Rolling Stones, Johna Lennona a mnoho dalších. 1 BOCKRIS, Victor a Gerard MALANGA. Nadoraz: příběh The Velvet Underground.

SEEKING BLOSSOM IN WINTER A National Theatre Wales Lab “People think that their world will get smaller as they get older. My experience is just the opposite. Your senses become more active. You start to blossom.” Yoko Ono What is the older artist to do? Seeking Blossom in Winter was an investigation into the possibilities afforded by many years of radical performance practice and experience, led by Kevin Lewis. Bringing together four Wales-based artists in their 60s, with over 160 years of experience in ex- traordinary, radical performance practice between them, the project explored what happens when these artists encountered each other and started to play. Kevin collaborated with Jill Greenhalgh, Phillip MacKenzie and Belinda Neave. In Chapter Arts Centre in March I had the privilege of observing, documenting and occasionally provoking in the room. Early on the conversation was so rich and complex that the best thing I could do was just try to get it all down. We agreed afterwards that we’d publish it ‘warts and all’ - I’m of course typing at speed and sometimes am inaccurate to say the least - but that’s just what it is. As an archive of four extraordinary sensibilities in performance making in Wales (and way be- yond) it strikes me as important to try and link to as many of the references as I could, and I hope that this may be useful to other artists who may want to attempt to reach as far and wide in their learning and their practice. Alex Murdoch, Spring 2019 MONDAY MAKING A START and SHARING PROCESSES (They talk about the history of Chapter, and supporting work.) Phil mentions Isak Dinasen ‘The Blank Page’ Kevin - So the idea for this project is ‘What is an ageing artist to do?’ I was leaving Iolo and people kept saying to me ‘are you retiring?’.

Having reached the pinnacle of his profession, he abruptly retreated from New York to pursue a quieter life in Memphis. After 1972, he took no more photographs, though he found a creative outlet in the design of stained glass windows. As preparations were made for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, with its emphasis upon American accomplishments and customs, it was not surprising that someone suggested a horse race from the West to Chicago. The ride was designed to pit skilled Western horsemen against each other over a one thousand-mile route spanning the three states of Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois. • Warner/Reprise Loss Leaders Booklet
THE WARNER BROS. LOSS LEADERS SERIES (1969-1980) Depending On How You Count Them, 34 Essential Various Artist Collections From Another Time We figured it was about time to pull together all of the incredible Warner Bros. Loss Leaders releases dating back to 1969 (and even a little earlier). For those who lived through the era, Warner Bros. Records was winning the sales of an entire generation by signing and supporting some of music’s most uniquely groundbreaking recording artists… during music’s most uniquely groundbreak- ing time. With an appealingly irreverent style (“targeted youth marketing,” it would be called today), WB was making lifelong fans of the kids who entered into the label’s vast catalog of art- ists via the Loss Leaders series—advertised on inner sleeves & brochures, and offering generous selections priced at $1 per LP, $2 for doubles and $3 for their sole 3-LP release, Looney Tunes And Merrie Melodies. And that was including postage. Yes… those were the days, but back then there were very few ways, outside of cut-out bins or a five-finger discount, to score bulk music as cheaply. Warners unashamedly admitted that their inten- tions were to sell more records, by introducing listeners to music they weren’t hearing on their radios, or finding in many of their (still weakly distributed) record stores. And it seemed to work… because the series continued until 1980, and the program issued approximately 34 titles, by our questionable count (detailed in later posts). But, the oldsters among us all fondly remember the multi-paged, gatefold sleeves and inviting artwork/packaging that beckoned from the inner sleeves of our favorite albums, not to mention the assorted rarities, b-sides and oddities that dotted many of the releases.
