James Taylor: Making Music and Memories by John Fries
Pittsburgh Boomers | August 2005 James Taylor: Making Music and Memories By John Fries If you went to high school during the 1970's, as I did, you'll recall a lot of really great music -- on the radio, in the school cafeteria at lunchtime, and on the eight track tapes you punched into your car dashboards at night while driving around. While the musical landscape offered something for everyone, much of it seemed to fall into two distinct categories: straight-ahead rock and top 40 pop. Here in Pittsburgh, we were either tuned to Trevor Ley playing Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd on 'DVE or listening to the "New Sound of 13Q," which played a wide and eclectic mix of whatever was in the top 40 at the time. The top hits of the day were listed each week in the pocket-sized "hit parades" KQV and 13Q published and provided for free in local record stores. The list could include any combination of rock, power pop, country, rhythm and blues, vocalists, the occasional novelty record, and that 70's radio staple known as the singer-songwriter. Remember them? The mellow music makers who played guitar or piano, wrote meaningful, introspective lyrics, and served up gentle melodies? The singer-songwriter sections of our 45 collections included titles by such artists as Jackson Browne, Neil Young, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, John Denver, Paul Simon and a West Coast band of country rock upstarts called the Eagles. Although they were - and are -- all great artists, James Taylor became the undisputed king of the genre. -

The Wonder Years Episode & Music Guide
The Wonder Years Episode & Music Guide “What would you do if I sang out of tune … would you stand up and walk out on me?" 6 seasons, 115 episodes and hundreds of great songs – this is “The Wonder Years”. This Episode & Music Guide offers a comprehensive overview of all the episodes and all the songs played during the show. The episode guide is based on the first complete TWY episode guide which was originally posted in the newsgroup rec.arts.tv in 1993. It was compiled by Kirk Golding with contributions by Kit Kimes. It was in turn based on the first TWY episode guide ever put together by Jerry Boyajian and posted in the newsgroup rec.arts.tv in September 1991. Both are used with permission. The music guide is the work of many people. Shane Hill and Dawayne Melancon corrected and inserted several songs. Kyle Gittins revised the list; Matt Wilson and Arno Hautala provided several corrections. It is close to complete but there are still a few blank spots. Used with permission. “Ain't Gonna Worry No More”: Depictions of the American South In
“Ain’t Gonna Worry No More”: Depictions of the American South in Randy Newman’s Good Old Boys Kate Coleman, B.A. Submitted in partial requirement for Special Honors in the Department of English The University of Texas at Austin May 2017 _____________________________________________________ Professor Coleman Hutchison Department of English Supervising Faculty _____________________________________________________ Professor Matthew Valentine Plan II Honors Second Reader Abstract Randy Newman’s album Good Old Boys (1974) is a southern concept album. Newman employs several narrators on the album in order to explore multiple perspectives and elements that illuminate southern identity. Newman’s observations result in a view of the South as disenfranchised, defeated not only by their regional prejudice and own mistakes, but by moral hypocrisy and abandonment from the rest of the United States. In implicating the rest of the country, Newman indicates that the struggles highlighted in the South and southern identity are not simply a result of regional dynamics, but indicative of larger American dynamics. What’s more, many of Newman’s observations and commentary withstand the test of time, and maintain relevance to political and social dynamics still present today. In providing biographical, historical, social, and musical context, as well as close-reading the album, the thesis not only explores Newman’s methods, but argues for his larger goals. Through analyzing and engaging with reviews of the album, both contemporary and modern, this thesis establishes Good Old Boys’ lasting relevance and legacy. i For my father, who not only taught me how to listen, but encouraged me to speak. ii Acknowledgements Never thought I’d make it, but I always do somehow. -
