Modern Rune Carving in Northern Scotland Andrea Freund and Ragnhild Ljosland (University of the Highlands and Islands) Abstract This article discusses modern runic inscriptions from Orkney and Caithness. It presents various examples, some of which were previously considered “genuine”, and reveals that OR 13 Skara Brae is of modern provenance. Other examples from the region can be found both on boulders or in bedrock and in particular on ancient monuments ranging in date from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. The terminology applied to modern rune carving, in particular the term “forgery”, is examined, and the phenomenon is considered in relation to the Ken sington runestone. Comparisons with modern rune carving in Sweden are made and suggestions are presented as to why there is such an abundance of recently carved inscriptions in Northern Scotland. The objective is twofold: firstly, the authors aim to present an inventory of modern inscriptions currently known to exist in Orkney and Caith ness. Secondly, they intend to discuss the concept of runic “forgery”. The question is when terms such as “fake” or “forgery” are helpful in de scribing a modern runic inscription, and when they are not. Included in the inventory are only those inscriptions which may, at least to an untrained eye, be mistaken for premodern. Runes occurring for example on jewellery, souvenirs, articles of clothing, in logos and the Freund, Andrea, and Ragnhild Ljosland. -

chapter 3 Immigrant Languages and Education Wisconsin’s German Schools antje petty n the second half of the nineteenth century, the Wisconsin land- scape was dotted with public, private, and parochial schools where I children and grandchildren of immigrants were taught in German, Norwegian, Polish, or other older immigrant languages that are de - scribed in chapter 2. Today, the language of instruction in Wisconsin schools is almost exclusively English, but the state still has large immi- grant communities with families who speak Hmong or Spanish (chap- ters 8 and 9), and the question of how to teach immigrant children is as current as it was 100 or 150 years ago. While the languages have changed, basic issues remain: Should Wisconsin children be taught in English only, in their native tongue, or in a bilingual setting? How im - portant is the language of instruction for “quality education” and content learning? What role does the school language play in the integration, acculturation, and “Americanization” process? And how important is the language spoken in the classroom for the maintenance of ethnic identity and cultural heritage? This chapter explores the example of schooling among German-speaking immigrants and their descendants in Wisconsin, the largest non-English-speaking population in the state’s early history.1 Education patterns in some other language communities such as Norwegian or Polish were generally similar, although the popu - lations were smaller populations.2 Still smaller groups, though, such as West Frisians, who numbered only a few hundred, lacked institutional 37 38 antje petty support and infrastructure like church services or a press and did not have schools teaching their language. -

At the same time, it has been argued that the enthusiasm for Nazi Germany among Mennonite immigrants in Canada is to be understood as part of a larger "Volks-German awakening". In fact, the Mennonite experience of brutal treatment during the Bolshevik Revolution, the economic conditions of the Great Depression, and assinflationist pressures from Canadian society put them in a naturally receptive position for the cultural, political and ethnic ideas associated with the "new Germany". -

Norsk Ordbok - the Crown of Nynorsk Lexicography?

Abstract Norsk Ordbok 'Norwegian Dictionary' is a multi-volume dictionary of the Norwegian standard variety Nynorsk and the Norwegian dialects. It is one of the very few dictionaries which cover both a written standard language and the oral dialects on which this standard is based. It was initiated around 1930, based on dialect material collected by volunteers and stored in a vast card archive, and on a variety of written sources. At present, three oftwelve planned volumes have appeared, reaching into g. The paper gives a historical outline of the project, followed by a brief description of its structure and the types of information it gives. This is exemplified by the treatment of one particular word, bunad. Finally, some fundamental problems are briefly discussed: 1) the selection of lemmas, 2) the character of the sources, 3) the treatment of dialect forms, 4) the sequence of definitions. The full title of Norsk Ordbok is Norsk Ordbok. Ordbok over det norske folkemâlet og det nynorske skriftmâlet 'Norwegian Dictionary. A dic tionary of the Norwegian popular language [i.e. the Norwegian dialects], and the Nynorsk written language'. This title at once indicates the dual aspect of the dictionary: It gives integrated coverage of both oral dialects and a written standard language. This dual aspect is the most special distinguishing feature of Norsk Ordbok as a lexicographic work. Normally, dictionaries cover written standard languages or some aspect of them (or, in the case of pro nouncing dictionaries, oral standard language). -

GERMANS FROM RUSSIA Why did they come to North Dakota? The region surrounding the Black Sea port of Odessa, Russia, figures heavily in North Dakota’s history. In the early 1900s, thousands of German Russians immigrated to the U.S., with large numbers settling in the state. SHSND 0169-03 It all began with German-born Catherine the Great, who married the future tsar of Russia, Peter the Third, when she was 16. When she became empress of Russia in 1762, Catherine issued a manifesto to her native Germany offering free land, financial help, and freedom from military service for Germans who would come to Russia to develop the land. Hundreds of thousands of Germans answered the call, to leave the crop failures in Germany, as well as lack of living space and high taxes. By the end of the 1800s, the Germans had created thriving agricultural colonies. When Alexander II became tsar, he wanted Germans to become Russian. The lives of Germans living in Russia were increasingly threatened. When Germans were forced to enter the Russian military to fight their native country, a new mass migration began – this time to the United States. Free land provided by the Homestead Act enticed many to move to the United States, especially SHSND 2005-P-021-00004 the Great Plains states. By 1910 about 60,000 Germans from Russia (immigrants and their American-born children) lived in North Dakota. Nearly all German-Russian settlers in North Dakota came here from colonies near the Black Sea, in what is now the Ukraine. They mostly homesteaded in the central part of the state with heaviest populations in Emmons, McIntosh, and Logan counties. -
