Don’t miss the Accessory Specials February 25% Off #34 Reverse-Pattern Foot with Clear Sole THE “KNOB OF MYSTERY” By Larry Delceg – Service Tech March 25% Off There’s a control on every mechanical sewing machine that most sewers are afraid to touch. It’s a mysterious dial on the upper left. Those other Embroidery Foot #6 controls such as the stitch selector, stitch length, stitch width – you may & Clear Sole #39 have mastered the use of those years ago. But that other knob… the knob of mystery… is called, “The Tension Knob”. You may have been told never to touch it. Or you may have turned it, and April your machine wouldn’t stitch properly anymore. As you are reading this, you 25% Off may be asking yourself, “Yes, what IS the purpose of that knob I never #68 & #69 use?” Let’s find out. When you thread your machine, the thread passes between tension disks. Roll and Shell The tension knob controls how much pressure is on those disks. If there is Hemmers & bernette too much pressure, the bobbin thread will be pulled up, visible on the top of Hemmer Feet your fabric. This produces unattractive stitch quality. If there is too little pressure, you will see loose threads on the bottom of your fabric. This is also unattractive. On a finely tuned machine, the top thread will be slightly visible on the bottom of the fabric, and the bobbin thread will not be visible May on the top of the fabric. This perfect balance is controlled by the tension knob. 25% off On every machine serviced by our Tech Department, we carefully calibrate BERNINA Stitch the bobbin and top tensions to produce precise, balanced stitch quality. Those adjustments are made using Aurifil thread, because it produces Regulator consistent, refined results. Next, we recalibrate the numbers on the tension knob to match the new tension setting. If you are sewing with 50 weight, 2 ply Aurifil, keep your tension knob on the red line (many Bernina models) or “4” (most other brands) and your stitch quality should be excellent. So, when should you rotate your tension knob? Lower the top tension when making buttonholes. On most machines, Sat 9:30 - 10:30 reduce the top tension by 1.5. For example, if the default position February 1, March 7, April 4, May 2 of your tension indicator is “4”, set it to “2.5” for buttonholes. This will prevent the bottom thread being visible on the top of your Looking for Adventurous Sewers! fabric. If 1.5 is too much, try reducing by 1 (i.e. from “4” to “3”). Change the top tension when using heavier or lighter thread. We have a great group, called Quilters Jackpot and In most cases, heavier (thicker) thread will require a higher you are invited to join. It meets the first Saturday of tension setting. It is not uncommon for heavier thread to require a top tension setting of “8” or “9”. Please avoid using heavy each month.
